I was first introduced to Cloud and everyone else through Kingdom Hearts. People knowing about Cloud without playing Final Fantasy VII just watched Advent Children, which was released three years after the first Kingdom Hearts game exposed him to Disney's audience. Though, I wasn't totally into Final Fantasy until the VII Remake. And I got Final Fantasy X a couple years ago. Also Cloud's inclusion in Super Smash Bros could also be what makes him the most recognizable Final Fantasy character.

Plus, even if we did explore, we had to go to the tower by gummiship and walk to the tower just to trigger a cut scene, which really worsen the pacing.

For the FF fans, these characters really bring the hype while the main plot isn't at the forefront. Helps with the pacing slightly. But even moreso, there's a certain nostalgic feeling I got in KH2 when Sora saw his old FF *friends* again and fought with them. It wasn't about being hyped to see Squall from FF8, but happy to see our friend Leon from KH1. I think Nomura lost his damn mind thinking he can just omit them and still keep this same level of traditional hype. The only time people felt like this in KH3 was with Roxas...and that was about it. Not that Roxas returning was a surprise or anything.

I really love KH3, but I always feel like I'm missing something. Oh, that's right. The Final Fantasy characters! KH3 wasn't bad or anything, but what really sells me into playing Kingdom Hearts at first was because of the Final Fantasy characters. They always have a place in the Kingdom Hearts world and always help out Sora and co. in their own way. I know that Nomura doesn't need them anymore since the fanbase is already big, but there should be at least a cameo or two.

I didn’t mind there being no FF characters the first time I played KH3, I didn’t even notice. But my second time around... you really feel their absence. There’s a charm that’s definitely missing and Kingdom Hearts is all about charming the audience. I don’t know where they would’ve fit in since the pacing was awful in 3 but even something as small as Seifer and his gang showing up as an NPC’s in Twilight Town or Leon and Cid showing up to talk to Mickey, Riku, and Ienzo in Radiant Garden would’ve been enough. Hell, not even a Sephiroth boss battle. Another 10 years to get that storyline resolved.

A thought occurred to me recently. When there weren’t any FF characters in KH3 (not counting statues), they said it was because the developers felt that Kingdom Hearts didn’t need to rely them anymore. Remind might’ve been a sign that they got the message when fans weren’t happy with that, but there’s something else. When I was a kid and playing KH for the first time, I didn’t know anything about Final Fantasy. But because those characters showed up in this series, it got me curious about their own games when I was older. In other words, Kingdom Hearts could be used to promote Square’s other games. With recent FF sales being so poor recently (due to multiple unfortunate factors), Square might benefit from going back to having more characters from their other games show ip in this series.

Cloud was very distant for no reason, & literally had no character arc or redemption to him much. Whereas Squall does. Yes, Squall was a bit cold at first because he hated himself for failing in saving his home Radiant Garden from Malificient. Which is why he changed his name from Squall to Leon because he felt that he didn’t deserve the name until he saves Radiant Garden by redeeming himself. But he grew overtime, especially in KH2 since he’s more caring towards his friends, especially to Sora. Honestly, without Leon, Sora wouldn’t be who he is today. All that is why Squall/Leon deserves more love & respect. 😔
