+Dark Pixel Gaming well with dark souls 3 just around the bend, ff15 hopefully coming out this year, and kh3 along with the ff7 remake coming in the future, the ps4 will become a home to many great games. For me I had to get one because of metal gear solid 5, which, despite it's somewhat lackluster story, gave me hours of great stealth action.

Aw man, everytime I hear the Kingdom Hearts OST, I get really emotional :,3 During my middle school years, my older brother and I had grown somewhat distant, we didn't really connect as much anymore or really talk since we had our own things going on. But when it came to KH. he would really open up to me and would play while I'd watch him from the sidelines and give him advice or point out items he may have missed. it was like a really long movie that kept us at the edge of our seats, and every day after school, we'd rush home to continue playing it until moving onto KH2. And what was also fun about it was that eventually, my mom came to love it as well. It wasn't just a video game, it was an experience that really ended up being an important part of my life and shaped a lot of the core values that I developed as an adolescent. That being said, I really love your review and I think you balanced out the pros and cons beautifully!

I think the music plays a huge role in the heart warming feeling you get playing Kingdom hearts. Sure everybody loves Shimomira's music, but where it really touches is on a subtile level not all people are aware off. even after all those years people are still hyped for this series even though the story doesn't always make sense without some help from the internet.
@CampingforCool41

@@Half-HeartHero he was chosen by the Kingdom Key. The Kingdom Key is a keyblade of Heart, and therefore not manmade like all other keyblades. It has sentience and chooses its wielder (shown when it reverts to Riku, then back to Sora). That's what the series has currently retconned 'chosen one' to mean.

I'm in Medical School and I hardly get to play games anymore. I remember these gaming days fondly. Disney and Final Fantasy were integral parts of my childhood, so I was a fan of this game. I have to admit, around the 14 minute mark I began to cry out of nowhere. The nostalgia is indeed very strong with this game. This proves how well this game was made and it is, as you say, a part of me now. Great reviews by the way on all of Square's games. Subbed.

Excellent review! Could not have put it better myself! Kingdom Hearts also holds a very special place in my, well.... heart. It was the game I would play to help cope with my parent's recent divorce. I remember getting to my dad's house after school, neglecting to do my homework, and spending the rest of the day playing. It was such a magical experience. I grew up playing video games and watching Disney movies, so it was like the entirety of my life up to that point wrapped up into one piece of simply phenomenal media that I just couldn't get enough of. It was also the first time I've ever seen any Final Fantasy characters and had no idea what the deal was with any of them, which led me looking into the series more, and now I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy as well! One of my fondest gaming memories was my first time facing Sephiroth in Olympus Coliseum, and getting absolutely stomped for weeks on end. Then I finally beat him and felt like such a badass, and was officially the coolest guy in school. Well, among my nerd friends anyway. I learned a thing or two about overcoming adversity thanks to that experience, haha. Kingdom Hearts has really stuck with me throughout the years, and I'm grateful for it helping me through a really difficult part of my life. Also, it's fun as hell. That too. The sequel's great as well, but the first game will forever be one of my absolute favorite games ever.

I like the fact that you do actually include how you feel about this game than just outright analyzing it in a full scientific way. Emotion is one of the greatest things we experience during gaming, and leaving that out, like many reviews just kills it. Keep up the good work.

+Mohammed Bilal Thank you! That's also why I decide not to give a star or point rating to the games I review. It's too difficult to quantify for many games. This one has the whole emotional attachment thing going that would throw off most scales. I didn't even play this game until 2013, so it's not just nostalgia. Anyways, thanks for the comment!

It's strange, because my experience with this game was almost identical to your own. My first playthrough of KH left me frustrated with aging game mechanics (even for its time of release, that camera was annoying) and initially the beginning was slow to me. But over time my attitude changed, and I grew to like it little by little, more and more. Nowadays I consider is a true innovative masterpiece. It has its issues of course, but the bigger picture is a one of the most ambitious and thought provoking games I've ever played.

This is probably the best review of any game I've ever seen, holy shit... I'm touched, and I'm reminded why I still love the music, art and ideas of Kingdom Hearts so much to this day. In a way, its ideas are like the embodiment of childhood passion. I think with this review you have so eloquently put into words what I have been trying to express for years to my fellow gamers. I remember seeing the tv spot for this game and immediately knowing that I needed it. I had never felt that way from a commercial of any kind, and never have since. I was so engrossed, so thoroughly moved by everything that happened in the game, that it became hard to really think about anything else. I loved Disney, and I loved Final Fantasy, but when I would play this game, I was really most enamored with the story of Sora, and by extension Riku. This game, more than any other, affected me in a way I couldn't possibly describe, and I can never really explain why. I just felt it. I don't know if it's my favorite game, and I've certainly played many others for longer periods of time, but it's probably the most important game to me, emotionally. And that's a strange gauge to have on a game, and one I rarely even consider.

Everyone's experience with this game is different, but somehow, we all end up saying the same things. It's difficult to explain, and impossible to quantify how good this game is. It just is. I think the scale of emotional importance is a great scale, though it's one I rarely consider as well. This game is important. Like I said, we are Sora. The journey this game takes us on is incredible.

this is a series imo where the music was a critical to the game as the game itself, I cannot emphasis how hard hitting it was in the when, when kairi says *I know you will* and Simple and Clean kicks off... to this day that scene has given me goose bumps EVERYTIME I watch it... then through the game as memorable as everything is around it the music to me has always stuck out, I love the characters and the story and how when playing the story you need to know the outcome of their journey as much for the characters as for yourself. Great vid

This review was great! And so moving! I started playing it a few weeks ago (I know, I arrived quite a number of years later to the game) with my little cousin, and now I can't stop thinking about it. And I know (or feel) that the story will get better and more complex with each game - I am absolutely ready for it. I wonder if you've played KH: Chain of Memories, which is the real sequel to KH, 'cause I've seen that you've already uploaded a review for KH2. Anyway, it's always a pleasure to watch your reviews. Keep up with the good work!

I remember the time right before Kingdom Hearts came out. Quite a few gamers did not have confidence in this game, but when it came out, many changed their minds after trying KH out. I was one of those who was looking forward the its release. This game is quite a classic in its own right.

Another mind-blowing review Casen, kudos! I was not expecting you to focus so much on the greatness of the story of the game, but rather on the game mechanics, but I think it was the right way to approach the game(s)! Your work is well-balanced, flowing, rhythmic, and poetic! I completely agree with you, Kingdom Hearts is a masterpiece in so many ways, whether it be its soundtrack, its (somewhat) convoluted story or its unforgettable characters. Each game (or almost) is brilliant in that it stays with you forever! I knew you would end up praising the Kingdom Hearts series anyway, considering the types of games you like (i.e. Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, among others). I think I'll translate the English subtitles that are available into French because your work deserves to be discovered internationally, but also because the series is extremely popular in France. Keep up the great work mate! Edit: I just finished translating your video into French, it's such an honour. I feel like doing the same for all your videos now, you guys deserve to gain more international visibility!

Just beat this today for the first time on PS4, and I gotta say, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. As college student, this game brought out the inner kid in me. I got more and more into it as it went on. I’m cautiously excited to play the other games because I know that the plot gets really complex.

Kingdom Hearts is my favorite game because when i had the choose a game for my birthday my second older sister said" hey why not this game?" I was confused at first, music was weird, graphics looked cool, and the sight of Disney made me ask why in a game like this. as i progressed and had both my two older sisters and younger brother watching and taking turns, it was the first game we all had fun together. we all got around a huge old Magnavox TV and took turns in worlds and boss fights and would talk about what happens when we miss something. As we were reaching the final boss we stayed till 3 am beating it and watching the cut scenes. It was the first game that had a huge story and had my siblings get into. that is why i love kingdom hearts for it being one of the best games i had on the PS2 and seeing my sisters and brother share the same connection to the game.

+Alex Ballarta That's awesome! Experiences like that are worth WAAAY more than the cost of a video game. Kingdom Hearts is just a game that anyone can connect to. It's just that powerful. I had the opposite experience with Kingdom Hearts. I loved it for the first 2 playthroughs, but after KH2 came out, I tried replaying it and I started noticing the convoluted BS in both games. I think there's a big difference between depth and complication in a story. I don't find the story of KH deep, as much as I find it a convoluted mess.

Today I finished the Final Mix version. My thoughts mostly are: The game has many flaws, but also an incredible atmosphere and that "it". I also have the "But then... I was thinking about Kingdom Hearts" feeling. The game definetely has a heart that shines bright. My biggest complaints are about platforming (mostly when boss battles rely on that) and that the combat could really feel like a button smasher, especially near the end of the game.

When I graduated high school, I was pulling my Kingdom Hearts stuff out of my room and my mom started crying. One, because that is what moms do when their kids leave, but two, because she was there my whole childhood when this series affected me. It’s something I cannot put into words to someone who has not experienced it. My friends roll their eyes when I bring up the series, but it is just impossible to put it to words what this series means to me. It’s been one of the few constants in my life and I hope it never leaves.

Yup yup yup. This game came out when I was 14 (like Sora!) and I was immediately obsessed with it, particularly because of that emotional aspect that meant a lot to me when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older, it's mostly lost on me, but still gives me a good shot of nostalgia to look back on it and listen to the soundtrack. You described that emotional feeling really well, and I think you figured out how it works. Thanks for the review. :)

Best review of Kingdom Hearts I've ever seen by far. You're the first one I've seen to touch on what makes the game series so great: the emotions it gives you and the connection it makes to your heart. I've seen so many reviews of Kingdom Hearts, but none of them have described that deep emotional level of this game, except you. I can see why though, it's a very difficult thing to describe and to outsiders, it seems like bias, but if you truly play these games, you will too feel that immeasurable emotional connection. I've been playing this game series ever since I was around 5 years old, and it's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have never in my entire life felt emotions stronger than I have playing Kingdom Hearts games, listening to the soundtrack, watching the openings, or even just thinking about the game series. The feelings that Kingdom Hearts gives you truly are indescribable, but you have definitely done a great job describing them. Great review :)

+Elfdemon Wow, thank you so much. Yeah, I sat at my computer for a very long time thinking of how I can put the emotions I feel for this game into words. It's not just childhood nostalgia, as I played these games for the first time in 2013. Honestly, without the strong emotional connection that the developers implemented perfectly, it wouldn't be nearly as good. Thanks Elfdemon!! I appreciate the compliment!

Another great video! Thanks a lot for your work on these. Since I first came to the channel just a few months ago I've only found more and more of the best quality content on youtube. Keep it up guys! Kingdom Hearts is also one of my favorite games in its generation. I think KH, FFX, Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia were the highlights for me at that time. It's funny because, I remember I bought my Gamecube by mistake. You see, I saw advertising for Kingdom Hearts and was so in love with Final Fantasy I had to play that new game. I mistook the PS2 logo with Gamecube's. Imagine after I bought the console and found out I was wrong... So stupid. Anyways, I eventually got a used PS2 later on and enjoyed this game to my heart's content. I really like how you analyzed the whole developing process for the game. Creating Sora and the rest of the original cast of characters for the game sure was risky as well, but oh my, so rewarding. The relationships they have within the game, specially Sora with Donald and Goofy, are so special. I totally get the feeling you were talking about; this game can get pretty clunky with its controls but it's so memorable. Recently for me, the original Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii made me live through that feeling all over again (no game was able to do this in a long time). It's got Shimomura's fantastic music as well! (maybe that has something to do?) Oh, and the Iwata Asks for XC is very cool, specially when it talks about composing the soundtrack. Anyways, good job!

+JCrossJ Yeah, all 4 of those games are awesome!! I loved the Gamecube, though. Great system. Thanks for the compliment! This game had been close to my heart for a while so I wanted to give it a proper treatment. Xenoblade is awesome, and Shimomura does such a great job. I've often wondered if the music is just so good that even a bad game can be amazing. Haha

This is the best one in my opinion. Not only is the story enough to keep me satisfied but it doesn't force you to grind for anything else other than secret bosses, which is a major plus.If you are a older gamer that never got to experience this game at a young age,I recommend playing this with a open mind since the amount of creativity and detail these games offer aswell as its amazing rpg elements are very good.
