Күн бұрын

Diving in the icy kingdom of Antarctica soon brings you face-to-face with one of the continent’s most highly regarded predators of the sea, the powerful leopard seal. And yet, when our co-founders Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mittermeier share a remarkable encounter with one special seal, the experience reveals a charismatic and nurturing side to these animals rarely shared with the rest of the world.
“Being in the water with a leopard seal is one of the most beautiful things you can ever experience in life. They’re very, very curious. And their curiosity, I think it’s what’s special,” Paul Nicklen.
The leopard seal patrols the frigid realm with ease, grace, and endless wonder toward any life that enters its home. However, the future of its domain remains in peril.
Covering nearly 20% of Earth’s southern hemisphere, Antarctica regulates the global climate, slowing down warming temperatures and capturing carbon dioxide from the surrounding air. The continent also creates a nutrient-rich environment for phytoplankton, the very foundation of the world’s food web, to grow and thrive. Today, Antarctica is vulnerable to melting ice shelves, losing land mass to rising sea levels, rampant overfishing, and increasing algae blooms that greatly limit the growth of vital plankton. But there is still hope to save its ecosystem.
Join The Tide and our community of action-takers for our planet, wildlife, and people at: bit.ly/SeaLega.... Become a part of the global ocean movement with Paul and Cristina, as together we help support the vital protection of the leopard seal’s home, Antarctica, and rewrite its narrative to a brighter future.

This is seriously one of the most amazing wild animal encounters ever documented. That leopard seal was an absolute beauty and she showed us that she has a beautiful spirit, too. She gave you the most generous gift an animal can give in nature: an offering of food

I loved loved loved your video. Our daughter is in the Antarctic now. She arrived there apprehensive about leopard seals' reptilian appearance and aggressive reputation. The latest we heard from her is how beautiful they are. I think this video will seal her appreciation of them. She has been sending home a steady stream of texts and photos/videos of her experiences there and the life they all encounter. She has opened up a new world, for me and some friends on Facebook, of a heavenly place, abundant with life and yet very sensitive to environmental changes. It seems you are showing the whole world, making it real. Thank you for making videos that show the beauty, explain nature, and that are available to everyone--most importantly by showing we are all connected, even up close and personal.

So the whole 'offering a penguin ritual' really did repeat?? Amazing. I remember watching BBC's "Life in the Freezer" many years ago. It was one of the first (if not the first) instances where Leopard seals were filmed under water, and in the 'making of' part you can see similar behaviour - Leopard seal right in front of the camera toying with a penguin and divers commented how they were like "cats bringing you mice".(It actually caused some controversy as one critic was certain that the scenes were staged). Extremely fascinating.

Absolutely amazing video. Leopard seal is huge and scary but at the same time, looks very cute and smart. I loved looking at those pure eyes. The testing of offering alive and dead penguins by the seals made me speechless. I admire the nature. What a fantastic job you folks have done. A Big Cheers to Paul and all the crews. Thank you.

I don't think people understand the deep level of intelligence that is suggested by these animals have emotions. We call it instinct and wave it off. But an offering of food to a creature that is very different and unknown isn't instinct. I'm amazed when my dog dreams. Creating a whole world in his head and then barking or growling, having an emotional reaction to that world. Animals are amazing. Also, I would never get that close to a leopard seal, lol.....truly terrifying power. You two have a whole different level of brave.

I am hooked by the way you presented Snow Leopards. We have already harmed nature so much, time to change has already passed, and is still passing. I often feel sad about how selfish we have become, this mentality of owning more and more has made our soul less human. It's time for change, and I swear I'll do everything I can in my whole lifetime to help protect every creation of god in spite of their nature.

Have these ever been seen in Hampton NH? I surf there all the time. 2 days ago, i felt like somthung was watching me. I looked to my left and about 5 feet away in the crashing waves was a seals head looking rifht at me. My friend was to my right. He confirmed what i was seeing. We made eye contact for a dew seconds, then we took and incoming wave back to the b beach. Now that ive been looking up seals, this is what it looked like. It very specifically has spots and a short nose, but was as big as or bigger than me (im 5 10")
