@@AngelMartinez-rx8ytI was thinking 'Empire' too... I had the thought, what if Proximus was one of Rocca's disciples and thats how he knew about Ceasar? What if he had 3 'brothers' who decided to usurp control of the myth from Rocca, kill him and his order and use what they learned to set themselves up as the three Ceasars of the Empire of the Planet of the Apes? And Proximus needed the vault to give him an edge against his brothers in the obvious conflict youbget when you try to make people who seek power share it

I really liked the movie. It makes sense that the human part isn’t yet over and they’ll make a final stab at regaining control before the apes truly take over. I also really liked how you could see the first steps towards the ape’s later social structure: the chimps getting interested in science, the orangutan's wisdom and them eventually becoming the cultural leaders and finally the gorillas as the military. They aren’t there yet, but the early signs are there and I can’t wait to see how that will evolve in what we see in the original planet of the apes.

I agree that human conflict is necessary for an Apes story to work, but the way this movie handled it was still a poor choice. They could've presented an interesting dilemma where the apes are simultaneously indebted to humanity while also treating them as animals. Or speculate on if apes are doomed to repeat the path of the human race. Or ask whether Ceaser would've prioritized helping humans even if they lacked intelligence. But they didn't do anything like that. Instead of finding some new, unexplored twist on this conflict, they seem perfectly content to restart the exact story we just finished

The movie however has a lot to live up to, especially to the second film of the trilogy "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes", which i considered to be not only the best Planet of the Apes movie ever made but one of the best sequels ever made perioud. Yeah really good point about the third act, would have been a nice twist to have the same ending but have the third act driven more by Noa’s story. What was interesting was how jarring the continued presence of sentient humans on the planet was though, and the almost disgust at Mae’s opportunism compared to Noa’s innocence and altruism. Noa is the hero here, and to convince an audience to cheer for the apes with a new hero (not Caesar) is an impressive feat!

I've been cheerin for apes for three movies and Noa's character just made me do it harder. I di wish they had focused more on the apes. I do get her motives (trying to help humanity), but as you said, humanity's time is done. it isn't that I hated seeing humans on screen. I totally hear what you’re saying about the idea of them bringing the humans back into this franchise however, I think that it will benefit it only because of the fact that I honestly don’t know what else they could do with only focusing on apes for two more movies of a trilogy. Given that there are humans that are still alive (and I will say nothing more more of that to not spoil) I wonder if this trilogy could end in a way where maybe it is better for the apes but we just don’t see it yet.

Good review. Still looking for a reviewer that talked about misinterpreted philosophy and dogma - which drives the underlying conflict of the entire film

Dan's opinion seems right down the middle compared to others ; Jeremy Jahns, John Campea and Stuckmann. My crew is very curious on this film now!

I pretty much agree with your take. Think the watching the new ape world with the different clans etc and their own internal conflict was way better than the human storyline. That did not resonate with me at all. I think you are right that it should be about the apes.

I just saw the movie, and it was ok/good ... but that's it. It kinda works as a standalone movie with a minimal Caesar reference. The "human" with the Lara Croft butt-tight-jeans and tank top was like ... really? They did stick to a story and CGI wasn't gratuitously thrown in in lieu of the story. The ending was lame. I watched the originals at the drive-in as a kid and everyone since. I'm going to have to give it a 3/5 stars, good watch but no where near the impact of the trilogy (which was outstanding).

We, as a species, are notorious for not being able to ascertain a metaphorical message. So, no matter what, a human element needs to be present if it wants to stay within the franchise. Keeping humans in the movie dumbstruck down the message so that everyone will understand it. I, like you, think an all ape movie could be fascinating.

Yes, but isn’t it also very unrealistic to expect Man to just go away quietly that would never happen

Just saw the film. It definitely keeps up the quality in so many ways. The animators and performance capture actors have outdone themselves again - WETA are the gods of this space and it’s good to hear them roar. The writing is mostly solid, but there are three scenes that really bring down the quality of the whole film through their sheer laziness and contrived set up. I won’t spoil the film, but you’ll know them for when a smart character does something inexplicably dumb, and leaves themselves incredibly vulnerable for no good reason except the story wanted something to happen to them and had no better way of getting them in position than for them to walk like lambs to slaughter. That really brought the film down for me. I really loved the librarian character - wish they actually utilized him more. Wasn’t sure what the point of him was by the end, as his inclusion at first seemed like it would be a massive deal, and then his knowledge and teaching affected nothing. But maybe that was the point.

My wife has seen every one of the new planet of the apes movies and she couldn't even remember what the last one was about, leading to low interest in this one.

"Freya Allan doesn't give my favorite performance in the movie..." Dan is always so nice. I've seen 3 seasons of The Witcher, & Freya Allan doesn't give my favorite performance in the series, either. Tho, TBF, many of the performances in The Witcher are not my favorite...

I haven’t seen it yet but that does confirm my fear that the series will begin to focus on humans as the driving protagonists. Of the previous trilogy, I think Rise is generally regarded as the weakest because it gave so much screen time to the humans

Agreed. Great flick! Was so invested with the apes. Humans kinda slowed it down. The should have let the apes rule breathe for a bit. I mean we know what ultimately happens years later.

I think it's a huge misstep that they are trying to bring humans back into the picture. I think it would've been more interesting if the apes were farther along the civilization process. I think early farming villages over hunter gatherer would've been interesting. And more politics than just brute action.

I'm with you, Dan -- the human element of doesn't work near as well as it should, to the degree that it does pull down the movie's overall quality. (despite this, I still really liked it, and plan on seeing it again.) no more humans!

Well said, Dan, I agree with pretty much everything you brought up. I also hoped it was more emotional, the same way the Caesar trilogy was for me. But still, solid movie and I’m interested to see where they take the franchise.

I think this will ultimately lead to the true battle of the apes.....so it'll all depends if you rout for the apes or humans. If the humans are all killed off why would you wnat to go to a future movie of planet of the apes?
