You're not the only one who gets emotional listening to this song. There's a story that Rob has told us Fries that when they were doing their collab with Don for American Pie, Rob mentioned to Don that Vincent was one of his favorite songs ever and Don said, "Then let's do it". Our thanks to Rob for mentioning that to Don or this possibly might not have happened.

I grew up with this song. Don captured Van Gogh’s life in word and music. Seeing his paintings flowing in the back ground is a genius idea. Rob was elated to do this as he has wanted to sing it. This should now become a classic!

Vincent Van Gogh was a tortured soul. It is almost certain he suffered from sever bi-polar disorder (experiencing high manic phases and very deep depression). Many suggest he suffered from schizophrenia as well. He's the guy who cut off his own ear. Van Gogh's work was not well-received during his lifetime and he ended up committing suicide. Of course, now his paintings sell for millions of dollars. "Starry Night" is one of his most famous paintings. This is such a beautiful song and beautiful tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. I can't say I think the song is "peaceful" since I know the struggles Van Gogh went through in his lifetime, but the song is beautiful.
@FritsKist7 ай бұрын
Vincent van Gogh was very stubborn. He mostly suffered from desperation. A smart person would have chosen another profession as art is a trap to poverty and misery; supply versus demand. Van Gogh (Gog) is succes by failure. Titan Johannes Vermeer had a tragic ending too, but due to an external cause: France occupation of Holland in 1672, end of the Golden Age.

I'm actually kind of hoping Don and Home Free will find a way that they can sell that painting someday if it's possible for them to do so. Thanks for reacting to such a masterpiece by the great Don McClean. It's a devastating song, but so beautiful. Mental health is so important.
@babyfry47757 ай бұрын
So beautiful and wistful about Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from mental illness and killed himself. Loved the video with the paintings behind them and then them all in a picture at the end. Don sounded great for 78! Good one Dennis….so beautiful! 🤩😄
@cmitchell73477 ай бұрын
You're one of only a couple reactors I've seen who noticed the subtle animation in the background paintings. Loved this back in the 70s and this new version still brings the feels. That melancholy effect. Don sounds amazing, no indication of his age in his vocals. And we get to hear a bit of Adam with his soft tenor backing silky Rob and Austin. Rob is a perfect complement to Don, very similar voices, and Austin has that natural 'cry' in his tone which suits this subject. Can never get enough of Rob and Austin together. Rob had posted that this was a fave song of his and also mentioned he struggled a bit when doing the video as he was getting emotional. Everyone is dressed so casually, Chance with his stocking cap. As if they were friends just hanging out, singing. Enjoyed your reaction, Dennis, and can appreciate the sentiment associated with Austin's upcoming departure. But, at the same time, really curious to see how the HF and AB journeys unfold.
@peggygross74097 ай бұрын
I think they were dressed so casually because they needed to match the style of Van Gogh's paintings. There was a noticeable shift happening even before Austin announced he was leaving. What comes next will be different but that doesn't make it a bad thing.
@peggygross74097 ай бұрын
One more comment about Austin. Although Crazy(er) Life is his last album with Home Free, I anticipate,we'll see plenty of him in the videos. I think there was at least one other video made when they were on the Country Music Cruise.
@peggygross74097 ай бұрын
It was a stroke of genius to use the guitar without additional percussion. The shifting paintings in the background add another dimension to the song. Just before the end they each freeze before getting plopped in the painting. Rob rises to the occasion.

Dennis, since you asked so kindly, I have re-subscribed. I feel like you do about the guys, especially lately since Austin’s announcement of leaving the group. I’ve been really appreciating all of their videos even more lately. Rob and Austin singing together when they swapped off back and forth solo and harmonized gives me big chills. Rob’s voice was so pure and angelic in this video, most likely for this song specifically. Don’s voice is still pretty darned great being he’s not such a young guy anymore.

Had to reach for the tissue with such a sad song sung so beautifully by the fab five. When Austin says “Vincent,” the tears appear. Thank you for a great reaction!
@debbienorris73077 ай бұрын
A thought about the HF reactions getting fewer views-it could be a self-protecting move (sadness and melancholy about Austin’s leaving). When they find a replacement and begin making music with the new group, hopefully things will pick up.

I first heard this song in a Junior High School art class. During his lifetime, Vincent hardly sold a single painting, but after he lost his battle with depression, his paintings sell for millions of dollars each. They did not recognize his skill and genius during his lifetime.

I'm so glad that you love this. I don't know anybody with a heart who would not like it. You DO need to listen to Don McLean's original music - all of it. His voice is almost as 'pristine' now as it was when he first started singing and becoming popular. I was there 'way back when' to hear and feel his music. I LOVE Home Free! You play it and I'll listen to it!

People tend to think that Vincent van Gogh was somewhat insane, but Don doesn't see it that way. He was an artist, with an artist's heart and mind. Full of love that they want to show the world, and as so many artist's, and others, he didn't fit into the structure and ideas of society. Don, being an artist in his own right, recognised this when reading a biography about Vincent, and he wrote this masterpiece of a song. I say masterpiece simply because it is, and it's considered by many songwriters, such as Paul McCartney and our Tim Foust, to be the most wellwritten song of all times, lyrically and musically. It's a craft of beauty in every way possible. Vincent didn't have any success during his life and he suffered from depressions, and like many in our world he tried to stay sane but he didn't quite manage a lot of the times. Not because there was actually anything wrong with him, but because an artist's heart and mind doesn't fit in the boxes of society. We see it often in those with addiction, depression, and so on. It's very often rooted in an artistic heart and mind. Anyway, Vincent eventually took his own life, at age 37. He was very close to his younger brother Theo who often supported Vincent financially, not who also was the greatest supporter of Vincent's ambition to paint. Theo was an art dealer, and he died 6-7 months after Vincent, age 33, and after his death his widow set out to promote Vincent's work, and succeeded. I get chills and cry every time I hear this song. It hits straight in my heart, as someone who has an artistic heart and mind and never really fit into the boxes of society, but mostly as a human being. ❤❤❤

Glad to let it run to the end when they appeared in the portrait in the art gallery. Your reaction to that was wonderful, so glad you caught it. Another person commented that it would be neat if all 6 of them; our 5 Home Free guys and Don each got a copy of said portrait. About the background they are huge representations of some of Van Gough's famous artworks. There has been an immersive Van Gough show touring the country. It might have been that type of larger than life renditions of his paintings. Thanks for your reaction. Belated birthday greetings. Be well.

I myself had always enjoyed this song but never knew the history of how/why it was written. After this re-release, I was directed to the wiki article on the song that explained its creation and history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_(Don_McLean_song) I found that quite enlightening. The major thing of note is the simplicity of the song. Just basic guitar chords which while filling in the background, does not take away from the velvet smooth voice of Don. Listening to his 1972 recording of Vincent, the emotion and inflections are still the same, but the richness of his voice is quite different now. I could listen to him all day long. I will say that Rob killed it. He has a similar voice to Don in his youth.

This is truly phenomenal! What a voice Don McLean still has! Wow. And of course Austin also sang great, but Rob's voice is just perfect for this song. His voice so warm, soft as silk and full of emotion. The quiet background vocals and guitar playing complete it for me. It's the same song as my youth, but with the Home Free twist it's something different. A beautiful song where I, of course, as a Dutch person, know the history of Vincent van Gogh well. I lived not far from his birthplace for a while. If I could, I would have given Don McLean and Home Free a bouquet of sunflowers in memory of Vincent. The sunflower one of his most famous paintings 🌻...... 💖 💖💖💖💖💖
