Man things are just things don’t over think it, it says a lot about you the fact you tried to find the owner, that’s good… but move on, enjoy it, it’s not like you are holding someone else’s cure for cancer, we love cameras, we enjoy to shoot, but it’s just a camera… yeah… an expensier one, but it’s just a piece of metal, I bet the owner would be happy to know some one is giving it a good use.

Don't feel guilt. You rescued the camera. You did, and will do, the right thing.

The Canon 50mm looks great on the M3! I use that lens on my Canon P and I’m always impressed by the results! They don’t call it the Japanese summilux for nothing!

You speak with such passion for preserving the camera as if it was given to you by someone you love. To have that respect and positive pride in this era is rare. This ability you display is a key reason I've been watching you for a few years. 💜

M3’s have a .91 magnification, mate. Not a .58 as you mentioned. That would mean suited for wide angle lenses.

A 30 dollar Leica, what a great find. I'd say the camera is in the hands of someone that will really appreciate it. My wife works in a church thrift store in a small town and I go over any cameras that come in to make sure they are in good working order. If they ever get in a Leica I'd probably wet my jeans !

Didn't expect you to get so real at the end. I could hear how much the responsibility of taking care of the camera meant to you.

I got a leica off of Facebook marketplace for 40 bucks bundled in with super 8 cameras. The guy's father loved photography and he never had interest in it. I feel absolutely no guilt about it. The camera is now in a house where it's appreciated. I ordered some parts ebay seller nobbysparrow(ebay seller who owns a leica repair shop in japan) and I will be restoring this baby. It is much needed. The guy told me he just had them stored in his shed and it showed.

I also thrifted Pentax spotmatic F + 55mm F1.8 takumar in japan. For only 8$, and works well, except for lightmeter.

nothing to be guilty of & i'm sure the previous owner will be glad that someone is taking good care of it. I've a canon 50mm 1.4 bought from ebay and it was from an estate sale too. Kept it in my drybox and use it occasionally for photoshoots. The previous owner who have passed on kept the lens in tip top condition.

There’s a take up spool mod for the tulip design that the newer Leica’s have.

Enjoy the camera one of my favorite cameras was pulled out of the trash can when I helped a family while at work. The camera belonged to there grandfather and since it had sat shelf for so long they thought it didn’t work and threw it away. I had told them i enjoyed old cameras and looked in the trash and it was still there. I’m pretty sure the original owner was glad that someone is still enjoying there camera

Regarding the disadvantages mentioned about the M3 in your video: You should bear in mind that it is probably not fair to compare the practical usage of a 70 year old design and product with the much more developed more recent mechanical cameras. If you mean to use an M3, it is probably because it's 70 years old and ancestor of the M legacy. Otherwise, it does not make sense. You can keep it as a museum piece, but it actually still serves well for street, portrait and landscape alike if accepting the slower film loading. You were so lucky to get such a fine specimen for 30 USD ;-)

I'm sure someone has already stated it in the comments, but the M3 has a Rapid Load conversion kit which makes the loading similar to the M6. I don't own either cameras, but I've seen it around, maybe something to look into.

The infinity lock on that lens is fairly easy to remove. Needle nose pliers and a small screwdriver. I used a cloth glove from the pack I bought to handle my negatives between the button and the pliers to stop scratches and improve the grip as the button will just spin with the screwdriver otherwise. The spring is internal so you just end up with the button and the screw. I rejoined them and tossed them in a small bag with a label of what it is in case I ever decide to sell that lens.

I have the canon 50mm f1.8 LTM lens for my rangefinder and dislike the way it renders color film but it is beautiful for black & white. Do you know of any other LTM that might produce better color film results?

I disagree about the loading system. It’s no issue. The difference in time to load is less than 20sec in 5 years and approx 120 rolls of film never felt that the loading time coast me a shot.

hey bud. first ever video iv seen of yours was you finding the leica and this is the 2nd video iv watched. your stuff is great. a little food for thought about the camera, you dont own it. in this world of usable collectibles, you dont own them, youre a caretaker. i come from the world of guitars. each guitar has a story and list of "owners", none of which still have the guitar today. but each guitar has a scratch or a dent or a story from each of those "owners" all adding up to a piece of history. while those owners are long gone the guitars still remain. they didnt own them, they just took care of them for a while. this camera is no different. i promise those original owners would be very happy knowing that camera is still getting used and being enjoyed. after all they bought the same camera too.

Of Course it found you. That you were looking for cameras may have played a part though...... Seriously, while there shouldn't be any feelings of guilt on your part, there absolutely should be joy in knowing the camera has a good, forever home and that its journey forward will be in the hands of someone who appreciates the camera and will show it the love it deserves.
