The cool thing about even just fake HDR is in ancient ass games like this that have no lighting system beyond character shadow blobs, is you can use the intensity to build a sort of shadow system, and use raytracing to bring out some more believable geometry in the scene. Now the catch is the colors arent perfect, but in the deviation I at least tried to make it match what it should present like in real life as much as possible. For instance the spectrum of most florescent lights, and flames have more red in them now.

I'll tell you why it's kinda obscure. I remember gathering at a friends house cause he was a professional video editor and was the only person i knew that had the GPU to run it. Most people didn't have voodoo, and this was one of the first games i remember that you couldn't play other wise. This guy had a pro Matrox card, that was out of reach for most people. Until we got to Quake 3, the game that forced everyone to finally buy a 3D accelerator, most games had the option to play it on software. Most of the people i know, played HL and Quake 1, 2 without acceleration. But Kingpin had it as a requirment, and i remember we lost our shit when we saw it running. It looked insane, we thought we're just a couple of years away from full realism in games. People still seem to live with that delusion to this day. Every generation thinks "this is it, we're nearly there". But yeah, we saw it, was amazing, yet nobody could run it, until a few years later, when other games stole our attention. I think people look back on these old games and don't realize most of the time nobody could run them at this quality. And even this looks shit to younger people :)) lol

Quake 2 was the game that made me get a Vooodoo card. The software renderer was horrible. And then there was Unreal 1 and Forsaken that literally made my mouth drop. I don't think I ever saw Unreal using the software renderer
@dunka124 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelODonoghueMOD Unreal was actually amazing in software. The water effects were....unreal. :)) But yeah, and it had a weird noisy filtering that masked pixelation too. I actually think that's why it surpassed the quake engine for a while in quality. It looked decent even without 3D acceleration. Kingpin was a weird situation with the gpu requirement, cause it took several years until it really became necessary and as i said, Quake 3 didn't even run without a decent GPU, and also we got lucky cause during that time nVidia, the new comer, released their Vanta series, 16Mb of raw crazy :))) , and they were way cheaper than the competition, or their Riva TNT series who was a bit faster. Not sure why the devs opted for that, when they were using the Quake 2 engine. I suspect it's cause it's very highly modified from the standard Quake2. You can see it in the models that keep trembling, which i suspect it's cause they were trying skinning. Quake 2 was only capable of translations, meaning the body parts were separate, and you could only move, rotate and scale them, but you couldn't distort skin or body parts. Kingpin looks like they were trying way too much for the time, and i suspect that's why they weren't able to run it in software. *edit: Look up "Unreal Castle (Software Render)" on youtube. You'll be amazed how it looked without any GPU acceleration. No giant pixels, nothing.

And we played through the entire game after that. I was hooked on the possibilities of PC from then forth, as nothing even close to this existed on consoles, and I convinced my dad to get me a PC (capable of playing games like Kingpin, as ours still had Windows 3.5) that Christmas. I have fond memories of Kingpin, and I'm glad you do as well. That one level where you navigate along some wharfs/docks was the most atmospheric scene I had seen in any game up to that point. The melancholic sounds helped, as well as the abundance of rats. Oh, and I'll never forget the jumpscare I received from that steampunk zeppelin monorail in the city. The fact that you have a choice to say positive/affirmative or negative things to other npcs was pretty novel for a shooter back then as well! I remember conversations with that one lady in the opening level going something like this: PATH A pc: negative comment - npc: negative comment pc: negative comment - npc [beats you to a pulp] PATH B pc: positive comment - npc: positive comment pc: positive comment - npc: positive comment pc: positive comment - npc: negative comment pc: positive comment - npc: [beats you to a pulp] The fact that this much thought was put into dialog options in a shooter had me in awe. The bullet-spungey nature of things was not great though, I admit. Especially the bosses (one of which could soak up several belts of the HMG at point blank range and the other was literally invincible because of story reasons) were a bit of a rude shock. I also found the two companions a bit too happy to charge headlong into large crossfire traps, which limited their lifespan by a considerable margin.

Pretty accurate review but it misses the most fun aspect of this game - the multiplayer. This game has an unique team based mode where each team has a money safe (on opposite sides of the map) and money bills spawn in the center at certain intervals. The goal was to collect and stash a certain amount to win the match but the catch was that you could ROB the other team's safe all the while trying to defend yours or control the money drop zone. I have lost count of how many friendships I've made and ruined because of this mode... as this game came right in the peak of LAN cafes and LAN parties it has caused a number of actual fights rivaling that of CS Beta. Correction: Wilson Fisk/Kingpin is a Matt Murdock/Daredevil villain though he has overlap with Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
@jdredalert4 жыл бұрын
Back in the silver and bronze age of comics, the Kingpin was almost a regular enemy in Spider Man's stories. He was also some kind of support character later, with Spidey always looking for him when he needed some info about new criminals in town.
@harrissyed14174 жыл бұрын
@@jdredalert True. But since the 1980s, he's associated with Daredevil a lot serving as his arch enemy though he does still fight Spider-Man every now and then. Hence why Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony/Columbia can use Kingpin in Daredevil (2015) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Although it's creepy, for whatever reason, the jiggly character models from the Quake II Engine look alright to me. They kinda give more life to the pixels I guess. I like my women the way I like my graphics; outdated, jiggly and never leaving my office. EDIT: That pathfinding! Holy tennis balls. I'm gonna need to give this a playthrough someday.

Huh. I never thought of how well done the start of the game is. It drops you in an area without direct enemies similar to Half-life, though you're free to punch anyone you like. You explore, talk to NPCs and eventually come across an area that's "gated", AKA the football fan Thugs. That's a very solid introduction that lets the player learn how to move around, get a feel of the game's atmosphere and the different mechanics.

Haha I had a friend who did the same thing, he brought the quake manual to school to show off the game when i was in grade 9. I remember wishing i had a computer to play it. Anyway Kingpin will forever hold a place in my favourite games list. When i was a teen we had 2 guys in there 30s who lived in are basement and made porn sites for a living. one night after watching the movie very bad things they show me kingpin life of crime, and omg i loved it! The violence, the gore, the swearing, and awesome graphics blew my teenage mind. I bought a bootleg copy a couple weeks later and played it from beginning to end in one night and loved every fucking minute. Whenever i play kingpin it brings me right back to my teenage years and i cant help but wonder what happened to those two guys both named mike who lived in are basement. Ill be buying that remake first day thats for sure.

It was, and still is, very common for right-wing media outlets to immediately blame real-world gun violence on video games whenever a mass shooting occurs. The 1990's to early 2000's was filled with talking heads on TV criticizing video game violence and talking out of their asses about the "connection" between violent videogame playing by children and real gun violence. It's crazy, but hardly surprising, that they're still blaming video games today whenever a mass shooting occurs because media companies like Fox 'News' are always trying to defend the firearms industry and so they use violent video games as a scapegoat to distract people who are concerned about real violence and prevent them from supporting common sense firearms regulations (like universal background checks to obtain a firearm, legislation that ~90% of Americans support). Numerous peer-reviewed scientific studies, including longitudinal studies and meta-analyses have continually shown *no* causal link between playing violent video games and causing real-world violence, including mass shootings. The real problem is that firearms are far too easy to obtain in America and there's too many loopholes allowing basically anyone to purchase a firearm, despite their mental health or documented history of abusive or violent behavior.

Gray Matter also ported True Crime to PC while they were working for Activision. A pretty ambitious console-to-PC port which added many new exclusive features (such as an online mode) and improved visuals, but strangely features no controller support; it controls rather awkwardly on KB/M but it's better than most. Nowadays PC ports are lucky to be on par with the console versions!
