One of the big things about this book that I feel should be mentioned that you didn't have the chance to in your review is that this is heavily referential to the world of rock and roll (quite intentionally). Each member of the band is a loose analog to a rockstar stereotype and their abilities are a reflection of that. Much of the comedy here is referential in that it's a band who used to be the most popular in the world, who disbanded and is coming back for one last world tour. Even the whole tour vs. colosseum fights is an overt rip on how music performance has changed over the decades. To further this, the sequel novel moves into another genre: punk. It is in the same world with a different, younger protagonist, and everything about it bleeds traditional, old-school punk. Fun read and good review, just wanted to float this aspect out there for anyone who this might be the selling point for.
@rolanddeschain6089

That's exactly what I was about to write. There are a lot of Easter Eggs for rock fans during the trip. You can also fully enjoy the book without understanding these references. But if you know that, it’s just a little bit more fun.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked that he missed the main USP of this book. Especially as the music references are what people talk about, not the D&D styling. I believe this book is 70’s style rock and roll, and the next book is 80’s music - some punk but also the main character is loosely based on Stevie Nicks.

@@Stoneward1 That's true, but this book seems the most similar to the way action and adventure animes are, and some of the battle scenes could be reminiscent of anime scenes. I think especially the way characters are introduced as they meet them on their journey and some of the humor in it gives me Shonen anime vibes.

Dude, I found this book looking for something to fill the void left by my first time reading of the Kingkiller Chronicle and I am so drawn in and attentive, eating up everything thrown at me by this book! I love that you make the D&D comparison, as a DM, It's perfect and was literally what I was saying as I randomly talked to myself while reading this book! I just finished reading it tonight. It has become one of my favorite fantasy books of all time. The thing I love the most about though is how simplistic the writing is. It's very easy to digest and understand what is going on. In books like the Witcher, Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings, the style that they are written in is... kind of fancy? I guess you could say. Often times whenever I read those books I found myself having to reread the same sentence many times over just to try and figure out what the writer is trying to convey. I don't have that issue with Kings of the Wyld. It reads like it's written by an average person who likes fantasy and isn't trying to sound like an old English professor (Which I guess the generation that wrote those books kind of are). It's easy to read and I love that about it. I also love how the chapters are on the shorter side, most range from 10-12 pages and I am all about that.

I was browsing the bookstore, saw it, and remembering that I've seen it mentioned a LOT on bookstagrammers channels, picked it up, read the first page, and was immediately hooked. "I'm getting the band back together..." As a fantasy reader and a Metal Head, this book rife with references to Classic Rock Bands. (I do believe that even the title is a reference to The Who.) It's very subtle and Eames is clever with his story telling. I loved the book so much I purchased several copies and gave them to my friends. I am re-reading this book again just to see what references I might have missed, it's that good. I don't think I have enjoyed a book so much since Harry Potter and Ready Player One.

My favorite part of the story was how well the musician/band parody was used. From the shifty mercenary agent, to the terminology used for concepts (tours, frontmen etc) the author found a way to cram as much music references without sacrificing plot or a coherent story.

I’m not a big Fantasy reader as SciFi is my jam but I dove into this with very scarce preconceived notions and I absolutely loved it. It blew me away and I found that these ‘light hearted’ fantasy really tickled my fancy and I really need more modern stories like this and authors blazing this path. I feel like Fantasy has been bogged down with these serious times of complex magic and political turmoil that I typically steered clear of most of it. Reading this then lead me into Seven Blades in Black which was also phenomenal.

I chose kings of the wild as the title to get back into reading and as an entrance to the fantasy genre in general. I haven't been reading a book for years and really didn't know if it's worth the try and where to start since I really only read harry potter and cherub when I was younger. Kings of the wild was the PERFECT book for that! It's easy to read, not too serious and "big"/ complex but still extremely exciting and fun to read. Big universes like asoiaf or cosmere etc. (I'm still not that knowledgeable, forgive me :D) were to intimidating and this satisfied my needs perfectly! I don't think any book could have catapulted me back into reading like this did. Now I'm very motivated to try other things and just wonder where to start 🤔 I was thinking about reading powder mage or the witcher next. Any thoughts about that or other recommendations that could be a good start into the genre? to my fellow germans out there: The book is very well translated and the jokes are delivered properly. There were one or two wordplays that got lost but you instantly notice them and translate them in your head without even thinking abou it. I wanted to have as much fun as possible with the first book after all those years, that's why I stuck to german... Glad I did bc I was flyyying through those 600 pages hahah

Yeah I read it towards the end of last year, and the main thing I can say about it is that it is so fun to read and has a nice pace to it, getting to one point to another. Like playing a video game quest - or as you said D&D campaign - moving from point to point but still giving you a nice amount of world and atmosphere as you go. I've been meaning to read the sequel 'Bloody Rose' (the paperback is sitting in my TBR pile), but wanted to start some series in 2019, I'll for sure read Rose early as possible in 2020. Judging by older comments on Goodreads page for Book 3, that's out in 2020, yeahhh!

After many of use trying to explain the most basic of human emotions, love (love for ones children, family, friends), we could not get them to understand. They kept on saying, "But she was an adult, they had no reason to go and save her." Never underestimate people.

I am currently reading Dark Tower: The Gunslinger. I don’t think it’s a bad book but it’s not that great either. Should I continue the series or nah?

Ev Ros I think it’s the worst of the series. The second book is the best, and from there it remains good.

Loved this book. Probably the only book in history with a chapter called "The ------ King" Chapter 11. I would have loved to read a battle between the band and an owlbear.

I really liked it, but I thought the end with Lastleaf, Larkspur, and Ganelon was confusing. It's nice to read something with one pov and a linear plot and tons of magic and humor. If it ever gets adapted, they can add the real music in.

I had a hard time with the first 100 pages, but after that I could barely put it down.
