As a Norwegian, I always find it worth mentioning in videos about the Kievan Rus that the last (Norwegian) Viking warlord, Harald Hardråde, was deeply connected to Kiev, and also our only saint Olav the Holy, had to flee to Kiev for a period. The nobility in Norway in general seem to be deeply connected to, and had their power and wealth from the eastern trade routes, the rivers into the Black Sea and south to Constantinople / Miklagard. The best and simplest way of explaining the White Rus, Russian and Ukrainian divide, is the following. The West Slavs and South Slavs split up sooner into separate Kingdoms (by the year 1000 and gradually became the Kingdom of Bohemia, Poland, Croatia, Serbia etc.) than the East Slavs who remained united with one East Slavic Rus people and language until the 11th century. The split of said Rus Empire into smaller Princedoms happened later and was more dramatic due to the not long after Mongol Conquest which divided the people of the former Rus even further. With the fall of most Mongol territories in Europe, the second incarnation of Eastern Rome and finally the Hungarians, new Empires rose on their lands in the 1400s and 1500s. Austria (West), Ottoman (South) and Russia (East). The weaker or smaller Slavic states in the West, South and parts of East slowly but surely ended up in one of these three empires. Until only one non-Russian Slavic state remained independent by 1600. Poland with its own "Empire" in the Southern Rus lands. Today's Ukrainians are thus the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Rus people that found themselves in the borderlands between Poland and Lithuania until 1569 and from then Poland-Lithuania and Russia. Thus they became closer attached to the West than the Russians in the East, a process that was started with the Kingdom of Ruthenia and its ties to the Papacy in Rome and continued under Poland, Lithuania and then Austria.

@commonwealthrealm2 жыл бұрын
@@Boyar300AV As an independent country named Ukraine yes, but the signs were there already in the 1600s when Poland's more and more divided Nobility caused Cossack uprisings and these created the foundation for the future state. Just because Italians were divided until the 1800s doesn't mean that there wasn't a people that would form the future Kingdom of Italy. Same with the Germans. Poland almost ended up the same way as the part of Kyiv Rus that is today Ukraine. Since the first Kingdom of Poland was split up into different princedoms in 1138 and was first partially reunited as the second Kingdom of Poland in 1320. Even so Pomerelia with Gdansk was first brought back to the Polish crown in 1466, Mazovia with Warsaw did not become a permanent province of the Kingdom of Poland again until 1526 and the rich Silesian lands with Wroclaw did not return to Poland until after WW1 and specifically WW2 (in the case of Wroclaw). Silesia changed hands until the 20th century from the Polish Piast Princes to the Bohemian (Czech) Kings and later Austria, Prussia and Germany.

Novgorod as a city state would make for an amazing video, a city that was quite democratic at a time when all of Western Europe was deeply feudal. Sadly, the progressiveness of Novgorod lost out to Moscow with its early form of an absolute ruler with Ivan IV after the decline of Vladimir. One of the most interesting aspects of the late Kievan Rus early Russian history.

Novgorod is... a special case, to be honest. It was a very different place from Vladimir-Suzdal and later Moscow. Unlike Moscow, which had a centralised and authoritarian regime, Novgorod was a feudal republic where the prince was fully accountable to the nobility. Novgorod, unlike Moscow, was heavily interconnected with Europe, establishing close economic ties with the Hanseatic League. The Novgorod dialect was the most distinct of all East Slavic dialects, having unique features common with West Slavic languages. Novgorod had all the potential to become its own nation fully distinct from the Russian nation centered around Moscow, but the conquest of the Novgorod Republic by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478 and the massacre of 1570 put an end to it.

Because the Ukrainian bs is strong with contemporary pop politics now. When Novgorod was a prosperous Republic, Kiev had once again become an insignificant town with a symbolic meaning. When Novgorod was the capital of the Rurikids, Kiev was just another trading outpost. The cradle of the Rus was always in the old capital, Great Novgorod. It's really irrelevant what was with Moscow during the days of the Kievan grand principality. Moscow wasn't important back then and Kiev wasn't the end all be all. By the time Moscow rose to prominence Kiev was mostly a provincial center to a few different states including the Cossacks who didn't care about it any more than any other city of theirs.
@olexandrkardash28742 жыл бұрын
From Ukrainian language standpoint, Ukraine seems to be meaning "inner/separate land" rather than "borderland". U - means "in" and krayina - means "land/country". There are some old songs that contain word "ukraine"(україна) as meaning simply "land"/"inner land". And even though the term first appears when Ukraine was not a border but a center - still it is commonly said that it means "borderland". Of course this is all just guessings and obviously it can not be stated as a fact, but this version deserved to be put in the video IMHO.
@sergiykyivua2 жыл бұрын
It's not guessing - from the linguistic point of view there's no doubt that Ukraine means country, land or inner land. The "borderland" interpretation originates in russian imperialistic mythology.

Mostly Russians translate the word "Ukraine" as borderland. By this they are trying to strengthen the secondary importance of Ukraine as a border area of Russia. In Ukraine, another theory of the origin of the name is widespread. It stands for "Inner Earth". It is based on the meaning of the Ukrainian word "Kray" (land, country) and the preposition "y" (in, inside). The fact is that in Russia the word "krai" is more often used in the sense of "border, outskirts", and in Ukrainian as "land". for example - "ridnyu kray" (native land). Therefore, it is natural for Russians to interpret the word "Ukraine" in accordance with their own lexical features, and for Ukrainians - according to their own. Since Western countries more often looked at Ukraine through the eyes of Russia (USSR), the Russian interpretation of the name is more common. In the same way, until recently, the Russian reading of the names of Ukrainian cities was used all over the world - Kiev, not ukrainian Kyiv. Lvov, not Lviv. By the way, this video uses the Russian spelling of the word Kiev, but Ukrainian - Lviv.

As a Russian, I must say that's quite a good job, but there are some things to improve! 1. The origins of the word "Rus" are unclear, but the most popular theory is that it's a loanword from Finnish "Ruotsi" meaning "Sweden", and "people who row" is just one of the theories. Maybe it's even a Greek word, nobody can say it for sure now. 2. Rurik, if he ever was invited to rule, appeared in 862, not 879. He died in 879. 3. Rurik isn't even necessarily a historical figure, because legends of three brothers founding a city/state are omnipresent in the North-East (see the legend of the foundation of Kiev). 4. It might not have been an invitation of a foreign prince (although you can clearly see the benefits of being included in the international system of commerce by inviting the Varangians), but rather a typical Norse conquest. Guthrum almost conquered England, why not conquer these lands? It is beyond any reasonable doubt though that the Norsemen were in a position of power in the IX century Russian North. However, how exactly did they come to that power will probably remain a mystery forever. 5. Rurik had never ruled in Novgorod. Novgorod didn't exist until the X century (the very earliest pavements in the city can be dated back to the 930s, but not earlier). Novgorod literally means "new city", so Rurik either had his residence up in Staraya Ladoga (as per one of the Novgorod chronicles) or simply at an old unnamed hillfort on the other bank of the Volkhov river. That hillfort, BTW, has ceded tons of Varangian artifacts during archaeological excavations and had always been associated with the prince's residence up until the conquest of Novgorod. 6. Why Helgi? He is known in both Russian and ukrainian sources as Oleg. You should name Rurik Hrøríkr then, to be consistent. 7. The true nature of the relation between Rurik (Hrøríkr) and Oleg (Helgi) is unknown. We can't even say they knew each other. Oleg, if he ever existed, was definitely another Norseman from the same clan, but Rurik's brother-in-law? That's far-stretched.

Then it devolved into a civil war for 8 years, where the Ukranian Neo-Nazi paramilitaries were absorbed into the regular army and launched a genocide against the ethnic Russians in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. There was money laundering and illegal arms deals courtesy of NATO... a bunch of treaties were violated... and eventually Russia reaches the end of their patience, comes in and hands Ukraine their ass.
