It is surprising that, being deeply integrated into the Iranian-Persian culture and traditions, Armenia became the first member of the Christian , which Rome later joined, and more later European countries. Armenia is a symbiosis of East and West. If I may say so, feet are in the East, head is in the West. And Armenian history and cultural heritage is underestimated or deliberately belittled. Thank you very much, KG team!

Christianity as the state religion by the Armenians The myth of the adoption of The cornerstone of the Armenian mythologized history is the statement about Armenia as the first country in the world that adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301. However, science has long known that as early as the end of the 2nd century, i.e. more than a century before the Armenians, Christianity became the official religion in the Aramaic-speaking kingdom of Edessa (Osroene). In 165, the king of Edessa Abgar bar Manu (Abgar V or Manu VIII) converted to Christianity, as he was convinced by a missionary from Palestine, St. Fadei (Addai), (Cheetham, Samuel, "A History of the Christian Church During the First Six Centuries" , Macmillan), and his successor Abgar VIII made Christianity the state religion of Osroene (Lockyer, Herbert, "All the Apostles of the Bible", Zondervan (1988), p. 260.). At the same time, some sources write that this was done by Abgar IX (Adshead, Samuel Adrian Miles, "China in World History", Macmillan (2000), p. 27.), who also laid the foundations of Christian poetry. In 1905, the German historian and theologian Adolf von Harnack wrote: “... there is no doubt that even before 190 Christianity was actively spreading throughout Edessa and its surrounding areas, and (shortly after 201 or even earlier) the royal court also accepted the church ( i.e. Christianity)" (Adolph von Harnack, "The Expansion of Christianity in the First Three Centuries", Williams & Norgate (1905), p. 293.). Irfan Shahid writes about Abgar VIII as the first ruler of the Near Eastern state who converted to Christianity. (Shahid, Irfan, Rome and the Arabs: A Prolegomenon to the Study of Byzantium and the Arabs, Dumbarton Oaks Trustees for Harvard University (1984), p. 96.). How, after all these facts, did the Armenians become the “first” Christian nation in the world? It is interesting that the Armenians, whose fabrications refute the historical facts, try to belittle the significance of the first adoption of Christianity by Edessa, resorting to outright distortions: some Yerevan “historians” argue that the adoption of established Christianity as a state religion, how to say, “does not count”, since at that time, it allegedly was not independent and still (or already) did not have statehood. In confirmation of these conjectures, they publish a map on which Osroene is indicated as part of Armenia. However, they are silent about the fact that Osroena was conquered by Tigran the Great long before that and for a short time, and by the time of the adoption of Christianity, it had long been independent. In addition to these distortions, these "historians" are trying in every way to belittle the significance of the first adoption of Christianity by the fact that it was associated with the apocryphal legend of the correspondence of Abgar V (Manu VIII) with Jesus Christ. No matter who the king of Edes “corresponded” with, and whatever the real reasons for his personal adoption of Christianity, the fact remains that no matter how much the false propaganda of Armenia puffed up today, more than a century before the Armenians, Christianity became the official religion in Osroene.
@Ruben-by4oy
@Ruben-by4oy Ай бұрын
For me it is obvious why. At that time it was clear that our more powerful neighbors will slowly assimilate us and our nation will dissolve by becoming part of Rome or Parthia. So our kings started to "experiment" with a new religion to distinguish the nation from neighbors, but 12 years later Rome also proclaimed Christianity as a national religion. Then at 405 AD Armenian alphabet was invented by Mesrop Mashtots (who started to work on it several years before that by order of king Vramshapuh). This led to the translation of the Bible to the Armenian language and helped to preserve our history and culture by historians of that era (many of them were students of Mesrop Mashtots).

I'm actually writing my Master's Thesis on the Roman-Parthian War of 58-63 CE in Armenia and this video was extremely helpful. The most difficult part of the project is the overall lack of primary sources from Armenia and Parthia (Tacitus has been the main primary source that I've relied on thus far). It's nice to find a video which focuses on Armenia's cultural and political history and the impact of being surrounded by larger Empires.

Though I suspect its prior to the time frame of what you are concentrating on, Herodotus (The Histories) provides interesting info on Armenia with regards to its relations with Assyria and Babylon, with enlightening considerations toward their esteemed river boat building, as well as their relations with the Persian Empire prior to Macedonian and Roman expansion. This may provide you some basis for why they were the way they were, once confronted by both Alexander and the Romans. Best of luck on your efforts.

@@TetsuShima Yeah, he is underrated. Not as underatted as some of the Romans who fought him (Lucullus, Sulla, Pompey). May I add that just about anytime one of these generals who knew what they were doing came along, Mithridates didn't stand a chance. Furthermore, he was lucky enough to be in an area (next to Greece) with A LOT of people willing to rebel - and Rome wasn't doing too hot... they were sort of distracted by civil wars, corruption, invasion, purges, etc. Despite this line of reasoning, none can deny that Mithridates did perform impressively. Not nearly as impressive as someone like Hannibal Barca.

Armenia can be considered among the most important Roman territories after the dissolution of the kingdom. Many of the best generals and emperors, and much of the core professional military, came out of Armenia or Armenian-settled Asia. In many historical games, including both the Total War series and the Paradox titles, Armenia is a decent stand-in for early-medieval Roman military structure, considering the emphasis on elite cavalry and archers, especially in contrast with the classical Roman legions and the Latin knights and levies. In pretty much any game that lacks an Eastern Roman, Byzantine, or equivalent faction, Armenia is my go-to choice.

This suggests that these people have some kind of core inside that feels that the people are in danger and produces more talented people so that the people can survive. @aramkosyan734

Thank you for making a video about Armenia, my country. It was a pleasant surprise. However, there are several mistakes I'd like to speak about. 1)Polygamy was popular only among the nobles and kings. 2)Tigranes the younger called himself "King of Kings" not because of his parthian wife, but because his father, Tigranes the Great forcefully took the title from Parthian King after a successful war, and as Tigranes the Younger claimed the throne for himself, he also claimed the title. By the way, he married the daughter of the parthian king to get support for becoming the king, not because he was obsessed with them. :D 3)Gregory the Illuminator did not contribute to the creation of the alphabet, the alphabet was created 100 years after Gregory the Illumiator(in 405). 4)Pharandzem was not the last monarch of Armenia. She and Arshak II had a son named Pap, who, after his parents death, was the one who drove back the persians and liberated Armenia. However, he did not like the romans' heavy influence and because of that he got killed in a party where he was invited by the comamnder of the Roman forces in Armenia. He got killed by a roman legionnaire during the party. After his death, Armenia got partitioned, but Armenian kingdom survived as a client state of Persia until 427. 5)Although I do agree that not everybody who lived in Armenia was Armenian, but I don't understand the need to emphasize it. It's not like Armenia was a multicultural paradise, although I understand that some of the creators are azerbaijanis and need to emphasize that armenians were not the only natives of the land. Armenia was always quite a monoethnic state, because the mountains and a harsh climate are not very welcoming for the outsiders. 6) Tigranes the Great didn't accept the "Lover of the Greeks" title. The greeks called him that way, because he helped kingdom of Pontus a lot, he gave shelter to greeks escaping from roman tyranny, but he did not have an official title like that. 7)I do agree about the fact that Persia influenced armenian religion a lot, especially the names, but armenian polytheism was not entirely zoroastrian. In fact,at first Parthians were using their influence to help spreading Christianity in Armenia in order to break cultural ties between Rome and Armenia, which were stronger than Armenian-Persian ties(much respect to our Iranian neighbours). 8) The Armenian Architecture was heavily influenced during Hellenism, but claiming that Armenian architecture is nothing but a mixture of Greek and Persian architecture is simply untrue. Armenian masons and arhitects were always famous for their unique works in Classical and Medieval ages. 9) It is said that Alexander did not conquer Armenia, as he was not interested that much. He sent a small contingent which was defeated.

About Tigranes the Younger, even his mother was a Persian princess. His mother was Cleopatra of Pontus, the daughter of Mithridates VI, and she was a Persian princess from Pontus. Her father was a Persian king, and her mother was a Seleucid princess (a mix of Persians and Macedonians), the Seleucids were Iranian from the mother's side and Macedonian from the father's side. The most powerful and famous queen in the history of Armenia is a Persian princess. Cleopatra of Pontus was Tigranes the Great's wife. Her husband is the most powerful king in the history of Armenia.

Just to add a little, Armenian kingdom wasnt technically started around 300BC but prior to the Achmeamenid Empire, Urartu (Ararat Kingdom) Kingdom of NAIRI, Hayasa Azzi. Orontids (Yervanduni, Ervandui, or sometimes pronounced Arvand, some scholars say Yervanduni (Orontids) might be linked to the Hittite kings of Arnuwanda and it's very likely that Orontids we're a well established dynasty before the Persians took over. Also there are sources from the past which indicates that Armenian alphabets was not created in the 4/5 the century but prior to that even BC, Armenian Alphabets was said to be sacred and wasn't used on currency or for politics. Plus that region was Hellenized for 600 years, so it wasn't out of the ordinary to have Greek inscriptions in Armenian rather than its own that time. Anyways I would say nothing is definite, there is always more to it.

Nice to see a video on this often overlooked nation, but unfortunately the lack of understanding the uniqueness and distinctiveness of the Armenian people and their kingdom is completely overlooked. In fact the large part of the video is focused on emphasising the influence of foreign peoples over Armenian culture and territory. Armenia was not just a geographical term of the antiquity, the Behistun inscriptions for example don’t just mention the region as Armenian but also clearly identify the ethnic people and name several of their generals and kings. Same applies for Ancient Greek sources where ethnic Armenians are clearly described and analysed. It speaks for itself that royalty of a kingdom especially with imperial ambitions is of mixed blood. It was always the case and is still the case with European monarchs who all trace diverse origins. It does not change the fact that they viewed themselves as monarchs of Armenians. The pagan Armenian religion too is poorly understood. Its not a simple mixture of Persian , Semitic and Greek deities but rather their names have been used applying the dominant regional languages. Armenian deities had completely different and unique attributes. For example the Armenian war and fire deity Vahagn was significantly different from the Zoroastrian cognate deity of victory verethragna. For this purpose he was more often identified with Heracles than its Zoroastrian counterpart. But most religions are international and often adopted and borrowed from one ethnic group to another, especially the Indo-European people have had many common deities. Even the Germanics like the Armenians worshiped a deity named Tyr. Not to mention the fact that some of the earliest mentions of many Aryan deities like Mithra and Varuna have been attested within Armenian habitat in the bronzen age Hurro-Aryan kingdom of Mitanni long predating the arrival of the Persians in the region. To paint the Armenian pagan religion as simply an adoption of the Persians would not do justice to the uniqueness of these people whose history far exceeds the Persian and Roman influences in the region. The Armenian Christianity too is completely unique with its iconography where the cross is never depicted as a tool of suffering but instead a source of life. If Zoroastrianism was part of the Armenian culture and Armenian kings would have considered themsleves Persian why would they then fight numerous wars against the Persians, invent a unique alphabet and create their own form of Christianity if not to separate themsleves from Persian and Roman assimilation? Armenians as a people have separated themsleves from others long before the influence of the Persians, Romans and the Greeks and have display an isolated genetic continuity in the region going back as far as the Neolithic. Not the Persians nor Romans or even the Greeks are genetic and culturally homogenous people. All those kingdoms included multiple populations, their royal houses mixed and their religions adopted and influenced by their neighbours. Today Armenians are one of the few people who have their own unique national alphabet in the region, their own language (which is an isolate within the IE family tree), their own national branch of Christianity, unique art style and culture which has proven to be far more resilient than even the Persians who have adopted Islam and use Arabaic script for writing. Nice attempt to highlight this forgotten kingdom but completely missed the mark on identifying the unique Armenian ethnos.

@@lambert801 You will never be wiped out, Iran will make sure of that, if that's not enough Russia will step in as well. Both countries did a big mistake for not supporting Armenia in the last war, now they are paying the price geo-politically. Azerbaijan received unprecedented support from both Israel and Turkey. The only reason Turkey helps Azerbaijan is because they want to cut of both Iranian and Russian natural gas and oil. And the only reason Israel supported Azerbaijan is because they feel threaten by Iran, so they want to have access to their land by building bases in the same way Iranian proxies are surrounding Israel.
