My Great Uncle was on-board the Lexington when it was torpedoed in the Coral Sea. He survived, having jumped from the flight deck. He passed away at the age of 98 a few years ago. The night he died and before I heard knew he passed, I had found a video when they had found the Lexington and were exploring with a submarine. I was thinking about him when he died. It was sad and comforting at the same time.

I have nearly the same story. My great grandpa was on Lexington as well and jumped when it was scuttled. I believe he found a boat with some of his friends but was stuck in the water for something like 8 hours. Interestingly enough he was on the (iirc) West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor

The story of the poor tanker, the Neosho, is actually pretty interesting. While her escort, the destroyer Sims, was sunk almost immediately, amazing damage control by the survivors of both the Neosho and Sims kept the big oiler afloat for four more days, before reinforcements arrived to pick them up and scuttle the doomed tanker.

Although the battle was overshadowed by the Battle of Midway, it's significance could not be ignore. Shōkaku was taken damage and have to be repair in the harbor, while Zuikaku, though being undamaged, did suffered a heavy loss of air group, meaning that she would remain in the harbor for replacement. As a result, both carriers would not participate the upcoming Battle of Midway

When the Japanese Carriers pulled back, they were left with just 22 Zero fighters, 8 divebombers and only 4 torpedoplanes. Out of an original force of 139 aircraft, only 34 remained. That's quite a hit when your training schools only produces about 100 naval aviators each year, not to mention the fact that many of the lost pilots were Pearl Harbor veterans. When Yamamoto heard what had happened, he was livid, and ordered Inoue back into the Coral Sea, and to find and finish of the Americans, but as the video shows, they were long gone by that point. Furthermore, operation MO was only meant to be a short campaign, with little or no Allied resistance. Instead, two of carriers meant for the upcoming Midway operation, had been hit so hard, in terms of ships damaged and loss of pilots, that they would not participate in any operation until the battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942. All in all, I would say not a bad day for the Allies.

Well, the US didn't come out of that smelling like roses either. The loss of Lexington and the crippling of Yorktown was a huge blow. The entire Pacific battle fleet was out of action and the Dutch fleet had been sunk. ABDACOM was a disaster, and the British were too occupied elsewhere to do anything to help after their losses during the Indian Ocean raid. The US Navy was in serious trouble. Sure, numerous fast battleships and carriers were being built, but those ships wouldn't be ready for a long while. After Coral Sea, the Americans were outmatched by superior Japanese naval aviation, outnumbered, and had nothing to counter the fast Kongos and enormous Yamatos.

Just one slight correction. Nimitz’s code breakers had only broken about 10-20% of the Japanese code. Being able to glean the Japanese plan from that little amount of information was the work of Navy intelligence. They are the unsung heroes of the war in the Pacific. But this video is an excellent summary of this battle.

Well, I wouldn't say that. The Pacific War tends to be focused on more than the war in the Med, for instance, or the North Africa campaign. There have been two films about Midway, three films that show Pearl Harbor, and so on. By contrast, I can't think of any productions about Cape Matapan, Taranto, Alexandria, Operation Pedestal, the Battle of the North Cape, the sinking of HMS Glorious, etc. Even aspects of the Pacific theater get glossed over sometimes, such as the crucial battles at Guadacanal, the gigantic battle at Leyte Gulf, the Burma campaign and (most tragically) the fighting and atrocities in China.

The Coral Sea was an example of both sides losing and winning a bit. It could be oversimplified into a Japanese Victory on the Tactical level, but an American Victory on the Strategical level. Nevertheless Shoho was an affrodable lost, the Lexington wasn´t, the operation MO was a partial sucess until the battle happen, yet it was decided during the battle who the Navy will not risk an attack on Port Moresby, thus the Army will have to do it on their own, starting the Kokkoda Trail Campaign, the Yorktown and the Shokaku were both left out of service after the battle. Yorktown was repaired as a desperate messure before Midway, while the Shokaku would be as a desperate measure after Midway.

This is a pretty clear sign that the Japanese offensive had basically culminated - in the grand scheme of things the whole mission was kinda pathetic. Yamamoto's 'decisive battle' was the only feasible option - even if MO had been a total success it would have had insignificant consequences.

Although in hindsight we know that Japan's losses were not affordable. It turns out that Shokaku was disabled and could not take part in Midway while Zuikaku lost too many airwings to participate in Midway. If those had been American CVs, they would have repaired them in time similar to Yorktown (or at least they would have transfered Shokaku's air wings to Zuikaku). So Japan's losses should have been affordable but given their flexibility with damage repair, they really couldn't even afford damaged ships. Of course, even without Zuikaku and Shokaku Japan should have had more air power for Midway but they decided to split off two CVs and go after the Aleutian Islands. So the damage to Zuikaku and Shokaku was only a contributor to the loss at Midway but still surprisingly influential.

Drawing the enemy into a decisive battle, Kantai Kessen, was the overall objective of the Japanese Navy. After all, it had worked for them against the Russians. Yamamoto also knew that as the length of the war continued, American military production would inevitably overwhelm the Japanese. In Midway he hoped for a second Pearl Harbor, that would give Japan more time. Japan could never defeat the U.S. but perhaps they could negotiate a truce that would leave Japan with most of their land gains in China and Southeast Asia.

@@joelwillems4081 Exactly as ouy are saying. After IJN did not sink US carriers in Pearl - which should have been the decisive battle moment, they needed to finish US Navy. They had to provoke and win the fight before US production potential will allow to build "new" navy and IJN would loose the superiority in naval forces. It was IJN plan from the start of the war. At this moment - after Coral sea - USN only had Enterprise, Hornet, severely damaged Yorktown and Saratoga, which have been IIRC torpedoed by submarine and wasn´t able to attend Midway, because of repairs. Even though IJN did´t know, they sunk Lexington for some time, they knew, US carriers were severely damaged, probably out of duty for some time. So IJN had a chance to surprise US Navy and thought that even when USN will take all its forces, it will be 2 or 3 carriers max (Lexington and Yorktown damaged and probably in draydock or on repairs, Saratoga possibly too). It had a reasoning. The problem was that US had intelligence superiority over IJN and luck.

IJN admirals testified after the war that it was either fight or Tojo Coup. Yamamoto just came up with the least bad option. The Army failed to knock Kuomintang out of the war and send their own air corp to reinforce Navy didn't help either.

With the implementation of CV'S on both sides, it became clear that Naval tactics would have arranged the CV'S in the center of any defensive parameters would become commonplace for all naval powers using Aircraft to arrange the same formation. With Two CV'S on both sides aware of each others presence Aircraft already deployed in the thick clouds could actually easily have mistaken the US group for the Japanese. The pilots probably realized it wasn't friendly airspace when AntiAircraft defenses opened fire on them.

You did pretty good one this one, It does really well against my personal favorite pacific war battle animation standard, Montemayor. Though his best video was midway, You have quite a high bar there, but I feel like you can out do him in the perspective you have chosen (his specifically was Japanese centric, theres room for both vids :) Midway seems will be truly the turning point on battle animations of the pacific war. Funny how Aussies forget their huge defeats and overblow a myth about their success. Macarthur and the Americans at the time didn't think much of the Aussie troops, relegating them to non important sections of the Pacific war with the island clean ups later on in the war. Battle of Brisbane between Aussie and US troops venting their frustrations. Many Aussies revolted and didn't like the waste of life on non important objectives. But the worst was especially after the Aussie and british capitulation at Singapore, which was the biggest disaster in British military history, possibly the beginning of the end of the British empire. You can see in this series how pitifully the Aussies crumbled compared to the US and Filipino fighters fighting on in the Philippines for months longer and after the fall of Singapore.

God bless data seekers and editors All episodes are great, but this was superb. Although its 80 years and I know how Pacific story ends in general, but few times I found my inner voice shouting on Allied forces: Look eastward, east you blind idiot... " This episode is great due to the thrill of seeking an enemy and following action. Its nothing new for many, but just here I found that Pacific theater is literally chess with biiiiiiiiiiiiig and metal chess pieces. In generall I had to appriciate tons of small additional figures and data in graphics. I did similar job in tabloid neswpapper as editor and I know how much work could be behind just one stupid tiny number who nobody saw at first moment, but great feeling of invisible great achievment was worth it. And my work was nothing compare to this, cause I was not seeking something lost in JAPANESE archives... 🤯 Must raise my hat and bow 🙏to all data seekers and editors...

Also it should be pointed out that Admiral King isn’t the commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet, he is the Chief of staff of the whole Navy as well as the chief of Naval operations. With this promotion from Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor, he really pushes the Navy hard to get into actions with the Japanese. For instance, ordering the seizure of a Japanese airfield on the island of Guadalcanal right after Midway (June), the set landing date was August 1

He actually changed the text of the allied agreement at the Acadia conference, Churchill wanted everything to go against Germany, King put in some words that allowed the USN and RAN some freedom of action in the Pacific.

Did you guy miss an episode, or is this a miss numbering? The last episode in the series was 'Japanese Advance on Burma Road - Pacific War #22' and this one is 'Battle of the Coral Sea - Pacific War #24. There is no #23', and unlike the last time there was a question, there is no video regarding the Pacific War in-between the two (as was the case with the Episode on Hideki Tojo between episodes #17 and #19).

A steep learning curve for both IJN and USN Task forces. Illustrated the importance of accurate reconnaissance, capability in aircraft and pilots, logistical depth and a bit of luck needed in a carrier battle. The intelligence gathered through the cracking of the Ro code however was probably the single biggest boon to the allies during this period in the Pacific theatre when the Japanese were at their apex.

One of the forgotten moments in history was that Japan should have taken Midway after Pearl Harbor. Their ships sailed past it to get to Wake Island, another US outpost. This accidental blunder would cost them the war. The deciphering of Japanese codes was actually done before Pearl Harbor. But to keep that secret safe only limited information was sent out and Pearl Harbor was woefully unprepared. (There is clear evidence that FDR knew the attack was coming but did not pass the information on.) The Coral Sea was the first battle between carrier groups only.

The first battle were Aircraft Carriers squared off and although the Americans lost not only the battle but a very important Carrier they started a trend that would continue throughout the war were they recued as many downed aircrews as possible. The Japanese on the other hand left many of their downed crews to die and the attrition would hamper them to the point that within a year they didn't have enough pilots to successfully use the Carriers they had left. Lesson learned...don't waste your men! A simple lesson Caesar had practiced almost 2000 years earlier and had allowed him to defeat superior numbers throughout his career.

As a retired Australian teacher I am sad to say the Battle of the Coral Sea does not get the respect (or mention) it deserves in our schools. I wish it did as well as that of our other efforts by our forces in the Pacific. As the past gets further away our memory grows dimmer but the sacrifice remains. The present requires our memory of the past so we can foresee the future.

Battle of Santa Cruz was a tactical victory for the Japanese. It is mostly recognized as a strategic victory for the allies, but John Prados considers it a strategic victory for the Japanese, due to the fact that it left them with the only carrier force left in the Pacific.

Yorktown's career was short compared to her sister Enterprise who would survive WWII as the most decorated ship of the US Navy. But the battles and contribution Yorktown provided before being sunk at Midway was substantial. At Coral Sea she helped stop the Japanese attempt to assault Port Moresby with landings and naval support. Failing this, the Japanese were forced to conduct a terrible overland campaign, marching through mountains that caused as much attrition and misery to their soldiers as combat itself. By the time the Japanese army made their way to Port Moresby they were ragged. An assault from the sea with naval gunfire support would have had a far better chance for Japanese success, but this was denied. At the battle we also see the proficiency of Yorktown's air groups. In the later Battle of Midway, they'd repeat their performance, to even include avenging the loss of Yorktown herself. There is also the story that with the battle damage suffered from Coral Sea, Yorktown was hastily patched up so she could fight again for Midway with her two sisters. The Japanese knew they sank Lexington and damaged Yorktown. They figured to see 2 US Carriers later at Midway, not 3, because Yorktown limped in for the fight. So, when Yorktown sank, she was part of two of the most critical major naval battles of the Pacific. She stemmed the tide at Coral Sea, and shattered the sword of the IJN at Midway.

Based on the 1976 movie, Midway, the Battle of the Coral Sea, was a dry run for the Battle of Midway. The US lost the carrier Lexington and its Yorktown, heavily damaged. The Japanese lost 2 light carriers and a cruiser.
