Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the First Crusade continues with the aftermath of the battle of Civetot of 1096 ( • People's Crusade: Batt... ) during the so-called People's Crusade of the First Crusade and the battle of Nicaea of 1097 ( • Princes' Crusade Begin... ) as the Princes' Crusade began. The Crusaders continued moving into the Asia Minor and had to fight against the forces of the Seljuk Sultan of Rum Kilij Arslan in Dorylaeum ( • Battle of Dorylaeum 10... ) and after the victory over the sultan, the road to Syria was open, leading to the Siege of Antioch in 1097-1098 ( • Siege of Antioch 1097-... ), but the partial victory of the crusaders in this siege was followed by a counter-attack of various Seljuk generals, leading to the biggest battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Antioch ( • Biggest Battle of the ... ). In the aftermath of the battle, the crusade almost collapsed, as the infighting between the princes became too difficult to resolve leading to a Civil War like situation ( • Civil War of the First... ). Despite this situation, Crusaders managed to retain some of their unity and continued deeper into Syria, where they fought at Ma'arra. Unfortunately, that was the battle that turned them into cannibals ( • Battle that Turned Cru... ). The issues persists, but the majority of the remaining Crusader army finally reached Jerusalem and besieged it ( • Siege of Jerusalem 109... ). In the aftermath of taking Jerusalem, Crusaders needed to secure the city against the Fatimid counter-offensive, which led to the last battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Ascalon ( • Last Battle of the Fir... ). It was followed by the Crusade many consider to be the worst - the Crusade of 1101 ( • Worst Crusade - Crusad... ). In the aftermath, Crusaders lost the battles of Ramla and Harran, and one of them - Bohemond, decided to go on a first crusade against the Romans - Byzantine Empire, leading to the siege of Dyrrhachium of 1107-08 against the emperor Alexios ( • First Crusade Against ... ). Meanwhile, to the east, the fight for the Holy Land continued and the Seljuk sultan Tapar launched the first ever Jihad against the crusaders, leading to the battle of Shaizar.

There was lots of engagements in the levant for a long time ago. Specially when the europeans came in Roman Empire, Byzantines, crusaders, and heck maybe we add the sea people. So, the trick to defeat the Seljuks is to stall them long enough, build a defensive formation, never pursue them during feigned retreats, and hope one year that their resources would be depleted in a war-style attrition battle, which would force them to give up the fight? That's kind of a wishful miracle to happen in reality. Rarely a battle like that can happen during the Middle Ages. I'm not saying that's impossible, but a rare example to show in the history of warfare.

The Byzantines had perfected nomadic warfare early in their history. Emperor Maurice wrote in his Strategikon that the best way to defeat nomads was to rely on highly disciplined and heavily armored troops. His troops would simply advance towards the nomads at a medium pace while being in the fulcon formation and would simply ignore any and all arrow fire, while returning fire with their own infantry archers. Infantry archers do more damage than mounted ones due to them having heavier bows and more arrows, nomads were also lightly armored which made them pretty vulnerable to arrow fire and so they would break and retreat.
@georgechristman6920
@georgechristman6920 10 ай бұрын
That's certainly one way to defeat a nomadic army, and most likely in the next episode we will see how Alexios marched deep into Seljuk Anatolia and defeated the Turks in the Battle of Philomelion in 1116, basically by forming a strong square phalanx of infantry in the centre, from where the cavalry could launch counterattacks.

They were this strong despite losing their heartland. Imagine how strong they would have been if they didn't lose Anatolia. Could have retaken Egypt with Latin support. The Latins also would have been more controllable due to the Empire having much more military and economic might. If leaders like Alexios and John had succeeded Basil then the Empire would have taken all of the Fatimids' lands, Sicily, Southern Italy and subjugated Venice. Basically return to the Empire as it was in 395 AD, an unquestionable superpower.

19:58 - sire, it is sickness again. Military history is FULL of this. The bane of every army. I think, you should spend some of your wealth to gather the smartest kids from every village, hire them great tutors, give them all they need, so that they can grow up and understand... stuff. Just like generations of swordsmiths figure out more and more about swords, you know. - Hmmm... Nah. Not glouawrious enough. Did you mention swords? - But... but sire, your army could be the healthiest army ever. - Onwords to gLoUaWReEe!

A serious shortage of learned tutors in most parts of the world in the early 12th century - and in the Near East there were probably only a couple. The only proper schools were for teaching the Quran, so no use really.

The first real major Jihad was under Imad ad-din Zengi. The Atabeg of Mosul and conqueror of Edessa. Before then, some Muslim warriors managed to inflict some defeats on the crusaders but before then, any Muslim victory where mere sparks that where put out. Imad ad-din Zengi literally began the ball moving, followed by his son Nur ad-din, and then Saladin.

The fatimid caliphate control of Egypt was the reason why they could lunch 14 invasions and lose and still able to invade since Egypt was rich and generated a lot of revenue so building armies from mercenaries or ghulams was not that hard

If it wasn't for alexious bureaucratic and administrative prowess as well as his taxation and financial reforms in addition to the eastern roman empires efficient taxation as well as the empires not overpreducing wheat and instead developing better transportation methods and roads and trade links and routes as well as developing excellent mining and minting and the technologies that made mining and drawing mines of water efficient as well as having large urban centers that exelent manufacturing thr byzatine would have never had the ability to have such a large revenue of gold coins not silver like many of western Europe did as well as centralization helped so basically eastern roman empire was very wealthy and just needed time to rebuild their army after defeat

And from 1102 Croatia was in personal union with Hungary (Pacta Conventa). By 1107 King Coloman controlled most of Dalmatia. So that part of the map is also wrong. 15:28 byzantine dreams... (Shaizar's emir's nephew Usama ibn Munqidh wrote a book "Kitab al-I'tibar" about these times.)

Topic proposal. Why did the communist countries do so well? Like North korea would've won if not for nato, north vietnam won over south. And seems like everywhere else communism had the upper hand until we intervened. So question Why were the communist forces doing better than the non comminist forces in other countries?

Communists; fighting for an ideology they (rightly or wrongly) are fervent zealots for. Victory is all. Everyone else; fighting for money or influence or strategic resources. Cost/benefit analysis enters into the picture. TL;DR; the communists wanted to win and didn’t care about the cost. Their enemies did.
