That jangley guitar sound is part of what made the Tempe music scene so unique in the 80's and 90's. The Meat Puppets were the forefathers of great AZ bands like Gin Blossoms, Refreshments and Dead Hot Workshop.

Never had any idea that seeing them live around the time of the release of this album would be such an important piece of music history. Got dragged down by a high school friend to see them, and was instantly hooked. Others had the Dead, but for this one, the Meat Puppets were IT. Saw them live every time they came to the DFW area from Up On The Sun until Forbidden Places. The energy was very different then. It's kinda' hard to take them as anything but a three piece because of seeing them as such all those years. Cool to see Curt still playing that same Les Paul.

They still sound great, even now with the original lineup plus two, but I'm glad I was able to see them in the 80s when they were crazy and out of control. Cris making comments from the stage about how they were only using Owsley LSD, never mind where they might have gotten ahold of that at that late date, unpredictable medleys and tempos so fast on songs that were already cooking. I liked seeing them more than seeing the Dead, as they were really flying by the seat of their pants then.

The Pups are still epic! I ashamedly remember drunkenly shouting for Sweat Leaf at a show at Maxwell's, in the early 90's I believe, since I'd heard them cover it at an earlier show. After maybe 15 minutes of this, Kurt - visibly annoyed - obliged me with 4 bars to shut me up! Ah, those were great days!

Truly sad to hear. When did he do that?
@augustusbetucius15723 жыл бұрын
@@lesfaul4924 A long time ago. I think the last time I saw them (1990 or so, opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers) he had already retired it.. Probably afraid to take it out on the road. Can't blame him though. They are decades out of production and if anything happened to it, it would be irreplaceable, and next to impossible to repair.

They had the bass too low.
@davidtapper69415 жыл бұрын
You can't really change the pitch of an instrument without tuning it alternatively or using a pitch shifter and this song is in standard tuning, so you mean to say that the bass was too loud. I disagree because otherwise you wouldn't be able to hear it, but some people like lower frequencies more than others.
