They put a parking lot on a piece of land Where the supermarket used to stand Before that, they put up a bowling alley On the site that used to be the local palais That's where the big bands used to come and play My sister went there on a Saturday Come dancing All her boyfriends used to come and call Why not come dancing? It's only natural Another Saturday, another date She would be ready, but she'd always make him wait In the hallway, in anticipation He didn't know the night would end up in frustration He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek Come dancing That's how they did it when I was just a kid And when they said "come dancing" My sister always did My sister should have come in a midnight And my mom would always sit up and wait It always ended up in a big row When my sister used to get home late Out of my window I could see them in the moonlight Two silhouettes saying good night by the garden gate What are you doing out there? Come on, you're gonna be out there all night? The day they knocked down the palais My sister stood and cried The day they knocked down the palais Part of my childhood died, just died Now I'm grown up and playing in a band And there's a car park where the palais used to stand My sister's married and she lives on an estate Her daughters go out, now it's her turn to wait She knows they get away with things she never could But if I asked her I wonder if she would Come dancing Come on sister, have yourself a ball Don't be afraid to come dancing It's only natural Come dancing Just like the palais on a Saturday And all your friends would come dancing While the big bands used to play

Summer 1969, met a girl at the Ilford Palais .Spring 2020 we're still together, laughing, happy and in love.Wonderful times and memories. In 2008 we were at Theatre Royal ,Stratford to see Ray Davies' musical.Although we had tickets, upon arrival at the Box Office we were informed that our seats were not available so we would have to sit at tables on the stage. It was a" put up job".My wifes' brother & sister knowing I was game for a laugh had set me up, and just prior to the start of the show several of the support cast came down the aisles, jumped up on the stage and each grabbed a punter, one of whom was me and the next thing I know I'm being whisked by a lovely looking 50's dressed girl to a jive number around the stage,it was a great laugh and great show.Somehow I don't think my dancing lived up to expectations.

The subject matter of the song meant nothing to me in 1983, I was 16 and carefree. Now I'm 53 and half the places I played in, danced in, kissed in are sadly gone.

Right music right clubs I joined the army at the right time....I suppose in a way our generation was the last to have everything together.. ....no decent music venues no fekin decent music no decent clubs or pubs...my kids are 31 and 26 I kinda feel sorry for them cos Irvine has no social life for them...and although the will have there own memories. ..they probably won't be as good as mines. I hope I'm wrong about that.......there used to be 4 local pubs where I stayed....THE VILLAGE IN ....THE BUT N BEN.. ...THE STANECASTLE where I first started drinking in pubs August 85 17 years old. and my beloved BOTHAN. Wot a place that was m8 everyone knew everyone never any trouble. Good night's dancing.. singing. Having a great night with my m8s..... coming home on leave get bus from Irvine cross but stopped right outside the BOTHAN and yes u guessed it even b4 I was home to see my family I was blootered but they shut that place down to.. but those memories will always live on in my head...

A former member of the Kinks died this week, I forgot his name for the life of me. A boyfriend from high school once made me a mix-tape with this tune on it. Cool, cute tune and I like it. The Kinks were a band that started in the sixties, I think, and they were still playing and kicking out hits in the early 80s. Gotta respect that.

Based on the age of this it must have been bass-player Jim Rodford who is on this video. He was also the bassist for Argent and reformed Zombies, and always looked like he was the happiest man in the world being in a big name band. Good bassist and seemed like a nice bloke - RIP Jim

I was 16 when I bought tickets to see The Kinks and I got them without getting permission. It took a lot of crazy antics and maneuvering but I finally got to see them (still without my parents knowing about it) and it was worth every bit of the trouble it took. Too bad I had to sit through the opening act that was The Romantics and their two hit songs they had plus a whole lot of filler songs which equaled to a whole lot of nothing.
