This looks beautiful. Schrader is a titan of cinema. Give the man his flowers now.

This looks wonderful. Schrader is such a fine director. I'm a 70-year old Canadian and know many Americans who came north during the Vietnam war and stayed. Now, with what seem to be long-term societal and political changes in the US as made clear from the election this week, I expect that this story will be very relevant again. I've already heard from several people I know in the States who are making plans.

Wouldn’t they be concerned though that Canada is on a similar trajectory with the potential that PP and the conservatives get in? That makes me question if something like that could/will happen.

I know Paul Schrader is gonna get the best out of Richard Gere, and Jacob Elordi, he's such a brilliant director. Especially Gere who hasn’t been making great stuff in a few years, but Schrader always extracts the darkest and sincerest side from actors like this

I only learned about the draft properly about ten years ago. The true implications of it. It must have terrified young men to be made to fight in a country they had never heard of, and have family’s come and collect their bodies at airports. No welcome home parade, no ticker tape. Just broken traumatised men.
@missmayflowerАй бұрын
Yup. A small town near my cottage took in several draft dodgers and their girlfriends and gave them a spot to build a commune in the woods. They donated food and tools. Those people lived off a lot of big bags of soybeans for years. It wasn’t easy, but it saved their lives.

And now enforced military service is going to happen again in the US. Patriarchy HATES young men but they never, ever seem to figure that out. I’m so sad.

And enough money to pay for educational spending in the USA 10x over, 50x all housing and community development, and every mortage, with money left over. What the actual f*ck, America. Then, we did it AGAIN in the War on Terror, that has only succeeded in costing $5 trillion. Final costs will be $8 trillion. So don't tell me the money isn't there for x or y social good. It is.

Canadian here: we say Draft Dodger. I have never in my 34 years heard "Draft Refugee". My parents were from that era, it was very common.
@marykelly5608Ай бұрын
I grew up living close to the American border during that time....they were definitely called "draft dodgers" , I think this movie is doing a clean up because draft dodger might be considered a pejorative term if you were against the Vietnam war. The spoiled hippies of that time, many like today privileged college students, protested the war to the point that those who served never got any recognition only vilification.
