Canon fan boy that left to Sony FX3s because of compact size, and sony listening to their audience, low light base iso and AF.. I do miss the canon look /colors from the C70 & that C80 with internal NDs has me struggling if I should switch back. Does the C80 have the same soft filmic look the C70 has? I just feel like ive never been 100% satisfied with sony look.

I also recently switched to Sony. However, not because of the cameras - to put it bluntly, they're only mediocre - but because of the Sigma lenses, which are so affordable and good. If Canon opened up their mount, they would completely take over the camera market. By the way, if you're ever not satisfied with Sony anymore, Nikon cameras can adapt Sony E-mount lenses with full autofocus with an adapter.

This video came at the perfect time for me. Built my channel to this point on GoPros and currently a DJI Pocket 3, but now ready for a ‘proper’ camera. I don’t have a horse in the race and don’t have to worry about switching systems. Currently leaning towards a C80, but worried once Sony responds it’ll just blow it out the water! Thanks for the insights

Recently switched over to Sony. An FX3 and 2 A7RVs. I came from using 2 GH5s', and an R6. I was adapting EF glass with metabones. The difference in my ecosystem is night and day. I now have Sigma E mount lenses that work across all my cameras natively. Ultimate versatility for photo/video jobs. I can have an FX3 handheld, an A7RV on a gimbal, and an A7RV for photos for event days. And the ability to move them to whatever job I see fit that day. The Sony autofocus that is similar between both photo/video is wonderful. Love the megapixel count for the A7RV. Love the lowlight performance and 120p from the FX3. Love Slog 3. I do think Canon grips are comfier, but with the Smallrig cages, they give more room for the pinky. Glad for Canon that they're competing with new cameras- but no 3rd-party RF glass is a deal breaker. Also love using Caleb's cinebacks for continuous battery life and fantastic handheld design, allowing for great autofocus while handheld. So glad I switched.

I think the biggest difference between Sony and every other camera company is that Sony welcomes criticism. This goes back to the absolute beginning as a company, before they were Sony, when they were TTK. Norio Ohga wrote a scathing letter detailing all of the flaws in the tape recorder he had just purchased and TTK, rather than placating, or ignoring him, hired him and eventually made him president. Tony and Chelsea Northrup have said in the past when they give negative reviews of Canon or Nikon, they get blacklisted for a period, while when they give negative reviews to Sony, they get asked what they can do to fix that issue in a future model and it never affects their relationship with the company. Sony isn't without sin, but there's a reason they've got such a good reputation with critics.
@lbeetech
@lbeetech 2 күн бұрын
You actually believe that. Where are the Sony firmware updates?
@boundaryscience
@boundaryscience 2 күн бұрын
@@lbeetech I already noted that they were not without sin, but in this regard, Canon and Nikon have gotten a lot of credit for releasing cameras that couldn't do the things promised and then fixing them later while throwing in a few extras to smooth things over. All of my Sonys have done exactly what they promised. I don't purchase products based on potential, and I wouldn't suggest for others to do so, either. Note that my Nikon Zf worked great out of the box and it hasn't gotten anything new since I got it.

@boundaryscience Photographers need to come back to the profession of photography. A camera is a tool, and in the current environment, people are looking for equipment to make them better. That has never been the truth. We barely use 20% of the features that new mirrorless cameras have. If people learned to use the cameras that we already have fully, the camera companies would go out of business. There will always be plusses and minuses with brands compared to each other.

Hello, common mistake, the RF mount is exactly the same size as EF, that's why the RF mount has a unique style of "baïonnette" that make caps hard to put on. With that you wouldn't put an ef on an rf mount and destroy your sensor or just not the good flange distance. Only Nikon has made a bigger mount, well the biggest of the FF mirrorless ounts

The weird thing the Sony A99 and A77 A-Mount cameras had amazing grips. I shoot the Olympus OMD E-M1ii and that camera has a really nice grip. I'm not promoting M43 but if you have a chance try the grip it feels really good in the hands. I have the Panasonic Lumix GH4 and that camera has a good grip but not as good as Olympus. Who ever is designing these E-Mount cameras needs to take a page for A-Mount cameras.

Sony did not go with a larger mount because E-Mount was really designed for crop sensor cameras. And Sony when they went full frame really did not want to redesign a new mount system and I guess piss off the first Sony E-Mount buyers it would had been bad press. But I think they could have done a new mount if they really wanted to. The only camera I can see people getting mad is if they bought the Sony NEX 7. All the other NEX cameras are kind of like little hobby cameras. I think there was the Sony NEX 6 that might have had a viewfinder also.

I think it was short sighted of Sony to cram FF sensors into E-mount. Sure they would've gotten a bit of bad press (especially given their previous reputation of abandoning platforms), but Canon wisely abandoned their EF-M Mount, Nikon abandoned their 1 inch sensor mount and I think with the bigger E-mount would've come much better IBIS and probably an easier time designing exotic lenses. But well, it's too late for them now.

Great video Connor! I also think a lot of what you said about the size of E-mount relative to RF mount is true, but actually does the larger mount make it easier to design more compact large lenses? I'd say that Sony actually make more lighter and/or compact equivalent lenses to Canon's offerings (the 1.4 range, 50mm F1.2, 28-70 F2). Also, the larger mount does mean the rear of the lens has to match the lens mount (though I suppose what Sigma did with the 18-50 2.8 for the RF mount is always an option). Where I do 100% agree is that in theory you can design lenses with wider apertures for RF and Z mount than E-mount (though somewhere I think Sony claimed that he E-mount supports a maximum aperture of f/0.63). Finally, IMO the undisputed massive advantage of the larger mounts are their IBIS (though some Sony users will disagree, but evidence does seem to suggest the bigger mount allows for a more powerful IBIS system). Also, you have to think that certain lenses must be quite a challenge to overcome to design, given the restriction of the E-mount.
@connormccaskill
@connormccaskill 3 күн бұрын
Yeah tbh I’m not sure how much of the “larger mount” is marketing, but e-mount was definitely designed for crop sensors at the end of the day. It would be really interesting to see a large mount from Sony, but I doubt it at this point

@thekofi1 3 күн бұрын

Seems like it's personal, Playstation controller is way better in my hands than the Xbox one, and the same is with cameras, Canon is way more comfortable than Sony in my hands, no matter if it's 5D mark III, R6 II, R3 or C70/C80 :) Actually the most important things, image and erconomics are on Canons side for me, and I always feel like Sony cameras are made for aliens, not humans, and that makes sense because Sony is really a tech company and their cameras are more gadgets full of features than sophisticated cinematographer oriented tools like Canon is. That's why their actual image progressed the least, it's like they have never watched Alexa footage, and this video is a perfect example, plastic unnatural typical Sony.

I don't believe that the larger RF of Z mount allow something, that cannot be done on E mount. It may be easier, but why should it be impossible. Full frame is the same size and all mounts cover Full frame. I think Canon did that as marketing strategy and Nikon as Well, because it's easy marketing, same as more megapixels in phones. The Z mount has a great advantage in it's size, you can use E mount glass on Z mount, because you can fit E mount lens inside the Z mount.

Proud Canon shooter here. Always have been and always be. Sony cameras overall are pretty mediocre overall if we're being honest and their only redeeming quality is, of course, their lens selection. But the ergonomics are terrible across all Sony cameras and the image quality produced by Sony cameras is average at best. Nikon has always been the definition of wasted potential especially in regards to their lens mounts and Fuji is ok for beginners but in the end a professional or at the very least, a serious hobbyist will definitely need an upgrade to something a bit more robust.

Hey if you like Canon that’s awesome. I like some of what Canon has done as well. Although to say Sony’s image is “average” is a quite biased I’d say. Sony produces some stellar image quality, but the workflow is a bit different so I think Canon first users don’t know how to work with it. Same if you work with RED, Blackmagic, etc. The post process is pretty different.
