Dave is the worst kind of character. He's a plot device used to cause problems. He literally never fixes anything and only makes things worse or ruins things that were going well. He's a lead anchor dragging the story down because every time he does anything, there's an 85% chance he's going to mess things up for the rest of the group, and the other 15% of the time, he's just saying incredibly stupid things.

Only thing I hate is how useful he could be if he can stay in his muscle form with wings for more than 5 seconds. Weird how he can stay in baby, teen and adult form for a long time but the useful form only lasts a few seconds. Like why?! Also none of his other forms relied on his emotions but the wing form does.

My thought on Kipo’s optimism, I think there’s kind of an Undertale effect in terms of theming. I think Jamock (I think he’s prbky the strongest supporting character in terms of vocal work tbh) talks about how Scarlamagne United Muts through fear, and fear seems to be the status quo, these separated groups of gangs, and Kipo presents the idea that this doesn’t have to be how things are, and she’s able to become close to Muts through genuine connection: the Timbercats were definitely starting to like her, the Snakes liked her because she was a musician, I think even Jamock develops a grudging respect for her. Btw one of my favorite scenes is her singing to the Mega Mut, there’s something about people facing a colossal being face to face, that I adore as a trope

This is also reflected in the theme of music. Kipo uses music to bond with the Mutes, singing along with the Timbercats, wowing the Snakes, and calming the mega monkey. Scarlemagne uses music too, but he uses it exclusively to torture humans.

The music also reflects the different characters Kipo’s music is soft and from the heart like her song with her dad which she uses to calm the mega monkey, or her joining in with the Timber cats folk song, and her rock shred with the snakes.... Meanwhile Scaralmagne’s music is classical posh and is supposed to reflect his desire to be seen as the more evolved higher society, which is why he and all the primates who serve him are all dressed like high class society.

I'm so glad someone else has the same criticism of Kipo the character as I do. I kept putting it off as "she's 13" but I normally hate that that has to be the excuse for kids' shows. Halfway through watching, I put up my hands asking "why does she have to be right all the time?"

The ironic part is the even YOUNGER child is more responsible than she is. Kipo is supposed to be the sort of idealist who brings hope and wonder back into the picture so that people are no longer "Just surviving" taking the time to appreciate what they have or where they are going... Yet Kipo is SUCH a pain to everyone else and such a danger that if she didn't have 10 foot thick plot armor she would have been dead the first episode. She is the writer's pet and it shows.

It has more to do with her upbringing...in the burrow she had to adopt both a more optimistic view (because she hates the fact she can never see the actual surface) and becasue the way they solve disputes and issues down there is not the same as they do on the surface, violence is not the go to action for the burrow communities. This attitude actually helps her because rather than fight or lose out on helpful opportunities her compassion, generosity and morals helps to not only get them along on their journey, but also helps to change things on the surface. Jamack makes two points...the various note gangs fought each other and didn’t get along, and only work now together out of fear stemmed by Scaralamagne suggesting to us that things on the surface are bad and need fixing, His second point is that not everything can be solved by talking and being nice, and so yeah we probably will have Kipo coming to understand sometimes forces is necessary when the other side won’t or doesn’t care to see reason however changing the different tribes attitudes towards humans as well as working with each other is probably only going to happen if she does it her way.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I find flawless characters who are always framed as correct to be very off putting. I don't need every character to be super damaged, WUBALUBADUBDUB edgelords, or whatever but have them LEARN something. Have them grow meaningfully and have them struggle just a smidge. Have them make a wrong judgement about something at least ONCE. Her singing to the giant monkey was the worst example of this. With no foresight, and no indication whatsoever that this giant beast that destroyed her home is at all tamable, she stupidly throws herself in front of it, sings to it, and it WORKS for no other reason other than she's just the special main character. I hate to use this term but Kipo is kind of a Mary Sue. Then again, this is just season 1 so maybe I'll be proven wrong next season. I sure hope so because everything else about this show is near-perfection.

I do think it's worth mentioning that Benson's views on mutes are much closer to Kipo's than Wolf's, which to me implies that Wolf is the odd one out using her past experiences to see the world as far more dangerous than it actually is (at least, without mentioning Scarlemagne)

The problem is the show itself both does and doesn't support Kipo's opinion. The show shows EXACTLY how dangerous everything is and how they have to do some due diligence to stay alive with some VERY tight escapes... BUT the show also is on Kipo's side in that no matter how dumb and suicidal she is, she is always shown to be correct. . Kipo could jump into an active volcano and it will turn out to be filled with jello.

I’m pretty sure part of the reason Kipo has purplish skin is because of how she’s part mute (or something like that). The lyrics of the song heard right before her arm transforms hints at that being the reason (the word “purple” being used a LOT in that song) but idk. It still makes for a very unique character design though.

I really like comic relieves, what I hate is the fact that it's more of a plot device than a character. With his stupidity and super form he can be a get out of jail free card or the sole responsible of a whole episode happening. I like him better in the second season now that he's getting a little bit of control and the team is a little bit more aware of the problems he causes. This does make it a lot easier for me at least to enjoy the dumb comedy and appreciate the character while reducing the disbelief I feel every second he's on super dave.

My only disappointment I had was that the Burrow humans looking normal During the first few episodes the mutants immediately noticed that she were a Burrow human because of her weird skin since there's still regular humans on the surface so I expected the other Sub humans having odd colors But when they're revealed to look normal I was disappointed (but I got over it pretty quickly lol)

I seriously forgot Benson was gay multiple times and I didn't think about the fact that the entire human main cast was black until the white dude from the burrow showed up and I thought he looked funny. Yeah, the purple girl wasn't the first one to look weird to me, the white guy was. Which I kinda find amusing.

I think it took my second viewing to twig "oh all the main characters are POC" (even if you ignore the fact Kipo is purple she's still half black half asian); also technically the female main characters outnumber the males which is pretty rare for a show that isn't specifically aimed at girls. Even having a 50/50 split (which is what you get if you only count speaking main character) isn't that common.

Weren’t the wolves working for Scarlamagne though, in fact when Kipo sneaks into the telescope room the wolves are sending a message to Scaralamagne telling him that they have humans there... Also Benson does have some character change, both him and dave discover through being with Kipo, and helping the raccoons that they feel better helping people rather than always running away and just surviving...

I agree with the first part, I felt like the episode was absolutely a "Wolf was right" moment. With regards to Benson and Dave there development didn't really feel solid because there wasn't really any indication that they were having these issues. When Benson is introduced he seems to be having a pretty good laid back time, he didn't come off as "just surviving" like he says, so when he has this revelation that there's more to living than surviving it's like... yeah, weren't you already doing that though? The only real development he has is where him and Dave learn to find joy in helping others but aside from their introduction which get resolved within the same episode they never come off as particularly selfish.

I have a comment about the fighting he mentioned at around 6:30. Now kipo is a burrow dweller and doesn’t know how to fight. The jump punch misses and she lands quickly cause of the extra weight of her new arm. She then slides down a slopped surface having her leg up to kick the flamingo. Now someone who knows how to fight would have stood up as fast as possible, but kipo doesn’t know how to fight. So a raised leg isn’t going to be impactful, so the kick wouldn’t do much but make the flamingo flinch. Now the punch sending the flamingo up without a windup was suppose to be a joke and show us that kipo’s new power is crazy strong. So her not having a windup and sending the flamingo to the moon shows that if she practiced and trained she would be a power house

Also the fact that kipo is swinging a mutated arm like it was nothing isn’t that far off. I mean the boost is to the arm, but is it just the arm? I mean if you boost the running speed of a person doesn’t mean they’ll sprint the 100 yards like an Olympian. It just means they’ll get tired faster. Or giving someone extreme strength doesn’t mean their muscles won’t just tear themselves apart. More things have to change with it. It also shows that as kipo swings her new arm, there is weight behind it as her body swings more with it, but if you noticed she is lopsided, but has good balance. Maybe the change is mostly located in her arm, but affecting her overall strength and balance to compensate. She did overpower the flamingos and a monkey while struggling so it isn’t a stretch that she got stronger in the rest of her body

I almost disagreed, because I thought "it's a kids show, it's fine for some of it to be a little static" but I realized, no, if they wanted that they should have stuck with less plot points that required that sort of change in the character to resolve them. Personally, I loved how the choice of music is sometimes completely different from the actual scene. It just made the Mod Frogs chase scene you mentioned more enjoyable for me. Maybe it's the timing of the music, because I definitely cracked up when Jamack just appe a r e d out of no where and the music seemed so surprised itself after being casual and jazzy. Like it realized "oh shit this is the wrong music the Vibe is Off but I'm going to keep playing anyway" Really hard to explain, but I guess it makes the action scenes more memorable than if they just slapped on some dramatic chase music. The same for the other Jamack chase scene in the same episode. L.E.T.S.G.O. paired with the really trippy backdrop and Jamack's badassery just made that episode for me. also can y'all stop shitting on my man Dave lmao, at least pretend you believe in him smh

Kipo does it better than most shows. Most shows focus on their sexuality rather than personality, Kipo does the opposite. Instead of said "diverse" character being a token with no character being shoved down my throat, we get Benson, and hes one of the the best LGBTQ characters imo. I dont want shows to souly tp focus on ships and romance. I want relatable characters and a good plot. I dont care if youre straight, gay, ect. Just focus on the plot and personalities of the characters.

Is it me or does *no-one* think Charlemagne is a compelling villain? You've gone over the entire show, managed to explain the key plot-points, and never once needed to mention the ape that is the reason why Kipo was on the surface anyway. Sure, you could say we don't know enough about him, but right from his first appearance in the show to the finale, it never really felt like he had any agency. Love this show so far! I like how you mentioned the super cool locations that they’ve created, I personally love how Scarlemagne’s palace is an old shopping mall with a massive tree growing out of it, it really fits with his whole European royalty aesthetic. Most of the stuff you mentioned gets addressed in season 2. Also why the Dave hate? I think he has a fun design and isn’t that annoying if a comic relief.

Seriously enjoyed Kipo I binged the entire first season in a day. I will definitely be watching season 2. The show has strong characters, world building, and plot. I honestly cant wait to learn more about the lore of Kipo's Earth. I find situations where humans lose their status as the dominant species of the planet an interesting concept. However, my biggest gripe with show is that it runs into the trope in that black characters who have or seek a romantic relationship typically ends up with a nonblack person. Much of the media for a while now has portrayed that a black person regardless of their sexual orientation can't have a stable relationship and functional relationship unless it is with a nonblack person.

@@itsjustvin7630 No it wouldn't be a really be a trope because it's somewhat rare for black characters to even be together nowadays much less be together in a healthy relationship. I can't even recall many romantic movies that stars two black characters in a healthy relationship. The only notable recent animation that portays a healthy black relationship is Craig of the Creek with Craig's parents and grandparents. I doubt its intentional but the media nowadays portrays that if a black person wants a decent romantic partner they should strive to find a nonblack (preferably white) partner.

I disagree in your comment on music, by analyzing first and second episode we have some pretty heavy foreshadowing and character build through music. First the theme of the series makes you know most of it will make you feel like a built of excitement until you throw a "woo" (and that literally happens to every main character at least once) and also establishes that this will be Kipo's theme by showing her and her name while starting the theme. Second musical statement, we will use already composed music to score important scenes, they do this by using "Now you know my name" when Kipo has already been fully presented as a cheerful, music loving, curious character, and they use the song while establishing her appearance, like saying "this is the last step to fully throw her into her adventure", after that they throw their last big statement: we will develop themes and music by using leitmotifs, when we here that distorted guitar as wolf's theme. So knowing that, we can imply that every important character to the plot will have a theme, for example Jamack has his own theme. But the second episode shows us two important characters without a theme (and from here i might be wrong but still is something interesting they do with the music), Benson and Dave they are as Luke Austin said in his comment plot devices. I include Benson, because he does what Dave does but with positive actions. If Dave cause a problem, Benson gives a solution. Because of that, they don't have a theme, but a mix of already composed songs that will show us their mood, intentions and consequences through the story. Kross I agree with your arguments in the rest of the video, great review.

Great video, but the wolves were going to eat then or turn them over, and even without the worst bug on earth ruining everything just like he always does, they would have ended up dead if they just went along with everything. The cats were going to turn them over even after kipo played the guitar. But you're right about the snakes, they went from trying to eat them on sight to letting them pass, and even showing showing them way in minutes, after a half a minute of music.

Part of the reason I love keepo is because of her optimism is very realistic for a slightly sheltered 13 year old the only reason I don't enjoy keep those optimism is because the show frames it as a pure positive 90% of the time like people has never really been wrong and I think that to develop as a person and a character they need that they need to be wrong especially young people they need to be shown that there's not one way to do things all the time but to be honest I think you kind of glazed over the fact that she was wrong in the Wolf episode she abandoned her friends because she trusted the wolves and she was wrong then she was told she was wrong but was still right in the end because she saved wolf but then continues to be perfectly optimistic the next time they run into hostile mutes so I don't know. I absolutely love character development and character arts but I'm also a firm believer in that sometimes just let characters have things already figured out for the most part kind of like I appreciate queer stories like Benson's where there's no identity crisis because guess what he just knows he's figured it out and to be honest that can come with a lot of confidence so I don't know if I really need a big Arc from Benson as long as they flesh out the character arcs with keepo and wolf that is I still need my daily dose of character development. 😅 Long story short I love the show but like everything else it could use improvement.

In terms of Dave and aesthetic pleasure, he is wild to look at. As a group, the color palette of Kipo, Wolf, Benson and Dave are incredibly cohesive (as pointed out in this video) and that makes Dave's design work for me. In terms of Dave as an actual character, I don't love him but I recognize that my taste is not what everyone likes. My boyfriend loved Meelo in Legend of Korra and loved Dave and the whole show when I didn't expect him to like anything about the show at all. This kind of difference in taste is cool and that makes it easier for me to enjoy and accept everything about Dave I wouldn't normally enjoy

Hello! I know I'm late to the video but the creator of the show has an instagram and she posted on her story if we had any questions about ep. 5, 6. So I asked them if in kipo and the age of the wonderbeasts if Kipo and the crew learn about Wolfs backstory . I really wanted to know bc when I watched the episode on was confused. Regarding the scene with wolf that stands out so much. I could be wrong but that specific shot was storyboarded and originally animated (not cleaned up by) Toniko Pantoja who left the project relatively early on. His background is in feature films and not tv series. I think this was one of the only if not the only shot he had a direct hand in that made it into the final show.

I don't like Kipo. What I see in Kipo is Avatar, in bad. The world feels very inconsistent and underdeveloped. In the first episode, we are being told that the overworld is a dangerous place where you can get yourself killed fast and while the world feels dangerous, it never feels lethal. Kipo is being a dipshit throughout the entire first episode and never learns from her mistakes. She keeps yelling and being oblivious and at some point, I just want to see her being punished for being stupid. The world is just so uninteresting to me for one reason. I never know what's gonna happen next, so the show can never surprise me in any meaningful way. If anything can happen, then nothing matters. I am legitimately expecting time travel at some point or Kipo being an alien at this point because the world is so poorly established. The mutant factions just bewilder me. They feel like an aesthetic rather than a culture. I never got the feeling that they have a cohesive social structure except for maybe the woodchuck cats because they talked about their "Axe lords" and memorializing their lost leader and their guitar axes. The rest of the animals just feel like an athletic paired with an animal with no rhyme or reason. The story is just...meh. An episodic show lives or dies by the episode and most episode suck because they show us the world rather than developing it. The characters are also not nearly strong enough to carry this show. I like them, all of them. But their relationship initially feels very forced. What I needed was some initial co-dependency from Wolf and Kipo, or introducing Benzon and Dave earlier as an initial antagonistic force that made Kipo and Wolf stick together. I am not excited for season 2 because I have gotten suckered into enough shows with potential to know that if a show has it you wait and see before getting invested only to be let down. Back to my avatar comparison, Avatar nailed the world-building. Every location, every people, every custom felt like a real thing in this fake world. And the episodic formula lends itself very well to that, and I am so disappointed in Kipo for not doing that as much because it makes everything else feel very hollow. Maybe Season 2 will be better but without significant improvements in world-building, I simply can not get invested. The positives you mentioned still stand and I agree with most of them but I feel you skimmed on the criticisms a bit. Also, sidenote. I love that Benzon is gay because I find it so hockey that the main male and female in these shows end up together and so I was really pleasantly surprised when they shot that idea down. Not to say Benzon shouldn't have been gay or anything, but the most mature thing the show could have done would have been Benzon simply not feeling the same way about Kipo and rejecting her out of that. But making him gay gives great avenues to explore him and I hope they take them. And the fact that Benzon acts completely normal instead of being overly flamboyant shows that this show knows how gay people are. Completely normal except that they like men.

I also saw Kipo’s arm as somehow retaining the strength of a Mute despite the fact that Kipo herself doesn’t change beyond that arm. That’s why the strikes seem so odd, because the Mute part is putting in so much work.
