The Navy always has the craziest war experiences, some epic, some tragic, and the rest often hilarious. It's hard to disguise incompetence when it comes to warships because they're rather large pieces of military equipment. For example the voyage of the Russian Baltic Fleet (Second Pacific Squadron) in the Russo-Japanese War is a tragically hilarious story full of absurd events.

This is all 100% completely canon to fable 3, and can be experienced firsthand if you play said game.

There are a few other navy stories tfe tells which I think are also worth a watch 1. In the Korean War a navy construction battalion infiltrated north Korea to steal some trains and ended up at a railyard next to a brewery.. and that ends exactly how you'd expect. 2. The uss barb invaded japan and blew up a train. 3. A destroyer pulled up to a german U-boat and were to close to use the guns on board so they just started yeeting potatoes.

The more I hear about FDR the more I wish we had a president like him today. Mans was told he may be hit by a torpedo while on a top secret war council meeting mission right as war was breaking out, and decides to go up to the top deck and stare death in the fucking eyes. This is the same guy that had a secret surgery aboard a vacation yacht to prevent the public from worrying about his mouth cancer, and led the u.s.a. out of the great depression and gave "fireside chats" weekly over international radio to update the american populace about the details of our climb out of the great depression and reassure the nation. This was also after he survived polio BEFORE the vaccine. That president EARNED his extra terms in office with tooth and god damn nail.

I would argue that the fletchers weren't just the most numerous DD's of WWII, they were the best. five 5-in/38 cal naval guns in dual purpose turrets, an assortment of 20mm cannons, dual and quad mounted 40mm cannons, and 10x533mm torpedoes. they excelled at ASW, AA, and surface combat roles. compare that to Japan's Kagero and Yugumo-class DD's, with slow firing and slow turning turrets, a mediocre AA gun in the form of the 25mm auto cannon, and 8x610mm torpedoes. I know which one I'd rather have
@collinwood657311 ай бұрын
I’d argue that the Allen M. Sumner and Gearing classes were the best destroyers of the war, but that should be obvious given they were meant as an improvement on the fletchers in every way based on wartime experience. The fletchers were essentially everything the USN had ever wanted on a destroyer but couldn’t fit on the treaty displacement limit and the Sumners/Gearings just incorporated design efficiencies to make them even better.

I picked up a game that is essentially the equivalent of a flight sim but for uboats called wolfpack, and honestly as much as the Uboat crews were hated I gotta respect them. It's not just a matter of finding an enemy ship, firing a torpedo and skedaddle. You need to gather information, triangulate their position, their heading, their speed, you then need to get a head of them and plan the attack calculating your torpedos bearing and distance so it meets the moving target all while not being seen or heard... and if you are seen or heard it turns into a horror game as you are stuck in a tin can 100 meters under the water, hearing the pings of sonar and splashes of depth charges knowing there is jack shit you can do about it.

1:19 Okay but while not as cool as the yamato or bismark, many, many destroyers filling out a much larger navy is by far the better option for the large-scale oceanic warfare that modern civilizations are capable of organizing, as it is a more efficient assembly of combative pressure and a better-spread distribution of resources more capable of withstanding long-term warfare, as per Sun Tzu's equal distribution of forces to mitigate the chaos of war.
@Kingofdragons117 Жыл бұрын
7 Destroyers and a couple Escort carriers (Didn't really have anti ship weapons for the planes) faced off against the largest Japanese fleet ever assembled and won. They inflicted so much damage the enemy thought they were fighting larger cruisers. The Yamato was in that fleet and displaced more than the entire task force. It was Hilarious.
@petesmithson1906 Жыл бұрын
There's a reason the Yamato and Bismark are at the bottom of the ocean 🤷♂️
@collinwood657311 ай бұрын
Also the Bismarck was terribly designed anyways. Ah yes, let’s design a battleship for commerce raiding (because that’s totally the best use of a battleship), give it an obsolete armor scheme that allows it to be crippled in a single hit, radar that is disabled by firing the guns, a massive torpedo belt but an equally massive weak point that allows the entire steering to be crippled by any torpedo that hits the aft 1/3rd of the ship, outdated AA guns, and to top it all off, build it inefficiently so that treaty battleships that displace thousands of tons less than it are equal or possibly superior to it.
@justsomejerseydevilwithint460611 ай бұрын
@@collinwood6573 So not only was it a bad idea, it was a poorly executed one, and the only reason it worked is luck and range advantage?
@collinwood657311 ай бұрын
@@justsomejerseydevilwithint4606 essentially yes, the German admiralty was originally arguing over if it should be a commerce raider or a direct competitor in a battle line (which is arguably worse because it would need to fight the entire Royal Navy and potentially French navy almost by itself). The fact that they didn’t even know what to do with it points to the idea that it shouldn’t have been built in the first place. If France had still been in the war, if Hood had received her refit, or if more King George V class were in active condition, Bismarck would have been slaughtered at Denmark strait and Tirpitz would have never left German waters.

Just as a heads up, there was not just one torpedo man. Each torpedo man was assigned a set of tubes they are in charge of. Dawson was in charge of tubes 3 - 5 and neglected to remove the primers from any of his, hence why they could tell who was at fault seeing the other 2 were still armed. This may be part of the everyone arrested myth as Marines did board the ship to ensure that none of the tubes got messed with before the investigation could start. So them doing a single fire drill rather then a volley fire one made this much better for the Willie D as well a volley fire drill would have meant 3 torpedoes heading for the Iowa...
