It amazes me how ass hurt everyone gets over your opinion. Your points are valid... they just get so mad and have a run in place temper tantrum because it’s true. I like Kirby’s. They clean well enough but are exceedingly heavy too heavy for many people, they do a lot but none of what they do particularly well... plus the whole door to door sales is outdated as fuck.

You have to dump the water and let it dry every time you use it, or it will rust the motor and smell bad. The separater needs to be washed every few uses. It's a lovely machine for cleaning all the surfaces in your home, but not a thing to whip out for quick cleaning jobs. If you actually enjoy vacuuming and tinkering with them though, then owning one will be enjoyable. Having one in an apartment was very cumbersome, so that's why I passed mine on to someone else.

I was raised with Kirbys. A 1965 Dual Sanitronic 50. I once had a cheaper Dirt Devil from WalMart. That's when I realized the difference between a Kirby and other brands. I agree Kirbys are far too heavy. I own 5 and the reason is is that I own 3 homes and two of those houses are 2 story so I am not lugging them up and downstairs. I've only bought them used, never paid more than $100 for a fully stocked one. I've only had one breakdown on me and that was a $75 fix. I think buying one used is a great purchase. BTW my mom is 89 and still uses her 1965 Dual Sanitronic 50. She complains every time how heavy it is. I've heard her complain about its weight since I was a kid in the 70s.Something tells me she's gonna stick with the Kirby anyway.

So i did just buy a Kirby G4 off of ebay, $179.00 plus $86.00 shipping, supposedly rebuilt, it was an impulse buy because everyone said they were the best, I initially wanted a vacuum I was able to fix myself, I did notice a difference in suction, my old vacuum was an Electrolux Precision with brush roll clean and would fill up to the top after cleaning the living room, even plug the hose with dirt if the canister was full. I did use the kirby all day in two bedrooms and filled up the bag,no where as fast as my old Electrolux. If I could I would have bought another Electrolux Precision but they dont make those anymore. I might have kept shopping around if your review would have popped up, but when I researched Kirby, the youtube algorithm had a bunch of glowing reviews, I only found your channel through a reddit post. Excellent review!

I've inherited an Avalir. I was utterly shocked at how much better it is than my dyson, especially for cat hairs and sock fluff. I haven't changed the belt yet or had to do any maintenance other than cleaning the roller - coming up for a year now. Only downside - using the tools is not nearly so convenient. I don't find the weight a problem with the drive mode and the performance is well worth it.

@@laxus8172 Sebo is a great machine, but so is Kirby. Having repaired both brands, they are definitely quality vacuum cleaners. I would have to disagree that the suction is horrible on a Kirby because I have owned several and they have pretty powerful suction. I used a Sebo Automatic X1 in my home against my 2005 Kirby Diamond Edition. While the Sebo was lighter and had on-board tools, it didn't match the suction/ airflow of my Kirby Diamond Edition. It isn't unheard of to see a Kirby that is 90+ that still works. I own one that is 63-years-old and still works great. Both companies make plenty of parts to repair them when needed, but Kirby does still make parts for machines that are as old as the 1940s. I do love Sebo, especially the Felix, but I will always own a Kirby.

Something to consider. The weight of the Kirby lies mainly in the motor. I think that is true of most vacuums. The Hoover self propelled Windtunnel weighs about as much as the Kirby does, and it is made mostly of plastic. So why would an all plastic vacuum weigh so much if its supposed to be so much lighter than metal? The metal on a Kirby is lightweight aluminum, aluminum is lightweight by definition. Also, some Dyson's weigh quite a lot, and even Riccar's, all made of plastic. I know the metal on a Kirby doesn't add much to the weight because I tried to sell the metal to a metal scrapyard and I got very little for it since it didn't weigh a lot. I have had a lot of Kirby's apart and I can attest that most of the weight is in the motor itself, the armature and field coil. But no one ever mentions this, they just say its what the rest of the vacuum is made of. I have a consumer reports from a few years ago with vacuum comparisons. Their top 5 vacuums (Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary, Mele S Twist, Kirby Sentria, Kenmore Intuition, Meile S7260 Cat & Dog) all weigh over 20 pounds. But the only "heavy' vacuum according to collectors is the Kirby. I know the Kirby isn't perfect, but the statements that I see over and over are often not really true, or could be said of other vacuums. Oh, another thing that was said that didn't make much sense. It was said that the metal on a Kirby can get scratched, implying a plastic vacuum doesn't. So are you telling me you have never seen a scratched up plastic vacuum? I sure have, plenty, well, pretty much every one that has seen regular use.
@PerformanceReviews

35:41 When using a KIrby on hardwood floors, you don't lower the powerhead right to the floor. That's why there is a height adjustment. You lower the head for various thicknesses of different carpets so the patented design for airtight suction can do what it is designed to do. YOu don't need to deep clean a hardwood floor. You should leave a bit of space so it doesn't scratch the floor. Also, when vacuuming a bare floor, you do not need to use the beater brushes (which are for carpets).

Hey! So I have been subscribed to your channel for some time now and very much enjoy your content. That being said, I do not agree with this particular video, I'm sorry. The vacuum is heavy and using attachments is cumbersome however, I do believe it is far better than any other vacuum on the market. You have to know how to properly use the machine in order to appreciate what it can do. Direct air machines do not have tons of suction but they have tons of airflow and that's what cleans. You had said about using the power nozzel on the hard floors - not designed for that. You would use the hose and hard floor to for that. The new Avalirs have 150 nozzle CFM and can run circles around any Dyson, Shark, etc.
@PerformanceReviews

@Jordan-nj2ve
@Jordan-nj2ve 4 жыл бұрын
@@PerformanceReviews I haven't used those machines and I would not buy a Kirby new. They are certainly overpriced. On the used market however, you can score one pretty cheap and most people who buy them new do it on impulse and then regret the purchase later. I just bought a lightly used Avalir with unused attachments and shampoo system for $200 - and it works great. I used the hose for some cleaning tasks and I agree, there is not a lot of suction but there is tons of air flow and that's what cleans! The Kirby is a great machine and I'm sure Sebo etc are great vacuums as well however, I would not advise someone to not buy a Kirby just because it's big and heavy and has no suction. It's a different type of vacuum that does not rely on suction but rather air flow. Educate people on the type of vacuum it is and how it works and the application it is best suited for. For example, buy a Walmart vacuum if you want to clean off surface dirt only and rip up your carpet and vacuuming is not a priority. Buy a Kirby, Sebo, Miela etc if you want a deep down clean, vacuuming is a priority, and you want quality.

Kirby's are built to last. I've had one for over 20yrs and it's by far the best vacuum I've purchased. Yes, it is heavier than it's plastic competitors but it will withstand the abuse of daily vacuuming. Takes a lot to put a Kirby out of commission, but parts are readily available if there is a mishap. I'd rather have a durable metal vac that can take a lick time to time than an expensive plastic vac that will break and have to be replaced...been there done that before purchasing my Kirby...haven't had to purchase another vac since. To each their own, I say🙂

A lot of bypass machines clean better than Kirby's because they have a nozzle that's designed to take advantage of what suction and airflow they do have.

Interesting to see side by side tests with the Meile. At the end of the day though, the two machines are completely different and it's hard to compare them since the motors designs are different along with the power they use. I understand what you were trying to show though since Kirby markets their machines as an all in one. I personally like them for carpet cleaning but that's about it and I think that's what the majority of their fan base likes them for. They'll never compare to the suction of a bypass vacuum like the Meile just because of what they are. Having said that, I would bet the Kirby would have an advantage for fine particles in carpet over most new bypass uprights and canister vacs. It may not perform as well with surface dirt aka larger objects but it will certainly get the fine dirt with it's agitation and even distribution of airflow. Now, do I think they're worth buying new? No. You can find excellent condition used ones for great prices on eBay and some people give them away for free! I personally like the older Kirbys without the self propel. I've had a G3 and a Heritage II in the past and both worked great but the Heritage II was much more compact. I don't have either of them anymore though. In fact, the only vacuum I've held on to out of every direct air vacuum I've owned is my 1989 Royal Classic. I've owned several Hoover Convertibles, a Eureka ESP, and I always liked the Royal the best out of all of them. It always did the best job with surface dirt and fine dirt and it's more compact and effortless to push compared to the Kirbys. I use it along my Sebo X4 Automatic and Simplicity Synergy. The Sebo does a great job, but the Simplicity, with the tandem air design, is about the only newer vacuum I've used that cleans carpet as well as the Royal or better. I will say the newer machines obviously are superior for filtration plus they have the attachments, but I still love my old Royal.

Actually he converted the Kirby into its canister mode, therefore they were in an identically mode. As a longtime collector I've owned or used every Kirby sence it's inception. I've pitted them against dozes of other vacuum both upright and canisters. In a mojority of the testes the other vacuums did much better. Unfortunately Kirby just isn't as good a vacuum cleaner as many other vacuum cleaners.

I have a Royal 2028 that was made in 2002, and I agree that they are excellent deep cleaners. I have owned a variety of vacuums in my lifetime and my two favorite brands are Royal and Kirby. I do like Sebo, Miele and Lindhaus, but I am old-fashioned when it comes to vacuum cleaners. I use my Kirbys more than my Royal, because I have hardwood, tile and vinyl in my home. There are large area rugs, too, and it is more convenient to use my Kirbys or my Oreck Commercial to clean them. Since my grandmother passed away, we have been working in her house: painting, remodeling, etc. I will be using the Royal in her house, because there is a lot of carpet there. It is currently covered up with sawdust and other debris, and I know the Royal will make short work of that. I have used it and my Diamond Edition Kirby in her house, and the Royal grooms the carpet a bit better.

The G3 was rebuilt by the Kirby Company in February 2021 and the DE was rebuilt by the Kirby Company in December 2019 and the SE was rebuilt by the Kirby Company in January 2016. So this 20 yr old cleans up pretty well for its age. What life expectancy can be expected from the other mfrs plastic models? I'm still happy using my kirby G4. Yes it is heavy but it doesn't go back packing with me. Being self propelled means weight not such a factor for single floor use. Hose installation is somewhat unhandy but workable.

My spouse bought a Kirby before we were married, so I had no say in the high price, door sales, etc. I am handy, and have repaired the now 30+ yr old machine as needed. It's cheaper than buying a new unit. Yes, I replaced the plastic fan once, and we are very careful not to vacuum up a stray penny or marble (it will suck them up, but that's what breaks fan vanes). Once I thought the power switch had failed, but when I opened it up, it turned out I had BENT the metal link from the button to the switch. I straightened it, and now am careful not to stomp on the switch button. If I DID need a new vacuum, I would not buy a Kirby. Instead, I would get a machine that had more powerful suction. As for the weight, I view it as a dual-purpose cleaning & workout machine. Finally, his suggestion of buying USED is good.

I agree that the Kirby Generation platform has been around for a long time, and every model they bring out is a re-hash of the same basic 1990 G3, and yes, they are dated now by todays standards, they are also heavy, and not very convenient for today's busy families, who want lightweight cordless machines to whip round with. You make some good points, but I think overall, the Kirby is still a good carpet cleaner (I own a G4, G7, and a H1), and worth having in a collection if you are a collector, but Kirby seriously do need to completely overhaul their design now, and bring it into the modern era. They need to make the Kirby lightweight, and have a hose built in at the very least, plus offering a small range of vacuums, rather than just one, would help - lets say a bagless version and a bagged, and even a cordless version for those who dont want the hassle of a cord. I think the title of the video is a little misleading though, as you are not actually doing a review of an Avalir 2, but a G6, which although similar, is not an Avalir 2.

I inherited a house where the carpet was installed around 1978. Not planning on replacing until I do some renovations. The Kirby plus rug renovator make it look pretty good. @@PerformanceReviews Interesting that you mentioned the Carpet & Rug Institute... Very few models (including Sebo/Windsor which are silver/bronze at best) make it into their gold certification. Kirby was in the Gold Certification (when they were paying to be listed). This indicates the highest level of cleaning. Consumer Reports also listed the Kirby (in specific product description) as deep cleaning better than any other vacuum they have tested. I actually prefer Miele canisters for convenience (not a Kirby fanboy), but something seems clearly off regarding the cleaning results you are mentioning (on carpet) that you are describing with the Kirby. Again - if anything, I am a Miele (canister) fan, but I can acknowledge the somewhat overwhelming number of tests (professional) and by respected groups (CRI) that place the Kirby carpet cleaning performance ahead of almost any of the other well known uprights out there on. I do wish Miele participated as I am VERY curious how the Miele canisters with the SEB228 head would perform in their tests. Miele canisters are my (much) preferred systems...

You definitely need to work on camera angles and lighting techniques to vastly improve your videography and show greater detail. With that said your content and thoroughness are outstanding. Thank you for this video review. You saved me from making a huge mistake. I have a friend who bought a Kirby with all the bells and whistles a few years back from a cute college student for well over 2 grand. He used it only a few times. He said he couldn’t part with it for less than 1 grand. I thought I was getting a good deal knowing how expensive they are. I have had a long long infatuation with owning one-almost a life-long dream based on the glowing comments of a couple people and an in-house demonstration. Well when you pointed out that they have changed little since 1989 I realized that it was the very early 90’s when I had formed my opinion about Kirby vacuums and it hasn’t changed until now. I’ll admit it felt like losing a body part knocking Kirby from the top of the hill in my mind. But no cognitive dissonance here nor brand loyalty. It comes down to facts. So now I am going to look elsewhere. Any suggestions from you for a top three in your mind for around 1grand and/or links to any of your reviews would be much appreciated. Again thank you for taking the time to make this video. EDIT I see your ZeroG review. Probably what I will get. I am coming off a Kenmore canister vacuum which I cannot get parts for any longer. Performance Reviews ah. I kind of figured as much. To Kirby’s credit though, they have made some tweaks to the design like the new mini-emtor to improve airflow, the improved tech drive (my sentria’s sounds much different from this GSix), the f-style bags, etc. I believe that Kirby seems to play with design and tweak it here and there with their models. It may not explain much like how Kirby recolored the later sentria to rebrand it as the sentria 2, but I see this as mainly steps towards a new design. Of course, your opinion may be different, but that’s how I see it. This really isn’t something new, they kind of did it with the 505-519 and 560-562 models where they re released them every year and the only major changes being with models 505 (obviously), 510, 516, and (IIRC) 561. I think they did something similar pre-war too, but I can’t remember.

But you're right, I'm also not a repair person, I'm just tinkering on vacuums for fun.

Gonna update my comment now that I’ve had more experience using Kirbys: They are cumbersome, heavy, loud, and not meant for people who are mechanically inept. If you are gonna buy one, take the time to learn how to use it. They are good when compared to bagless abominations, but many bagged ones are better options. The TechDrive helps when using it, but when the vacuums off its no benefit it only adds weight. They are great if you have wall-to-wall carpet and don’t need to use the hose often.

Bro kirby is the best performer! I mean your right it’s not the best performer on picking up heavy objects on top of the carpet because Kirby’s don’t have good suction but it has the best airflow which is more important so Kirby’s are normally designed for the best deep cleaner!!!
@PerformanceReviews

Best is always relevant especially when you try a lot of other machines and see a lot of results. I can definitely say there are other vacuums that cost a lot less that clean a lot better and will Outlast the this Kirby.

I came here after a kirby demo to see what I missed. The salesman focused on the mattress and couch. I have a lot of dust but I don't think other vacuums can't get similar rezults in a demo. Ask was 2300EUR which is a normal vacuum a month for a long time. As for longevity, I've had an electrolux for 19years. And the one I have now - other brand - has a rotating brush for mattres. Without the buyer's remorse, I think your review is accurate and fair.

I had a Kirby senttria 2 for 20 sum years and just sold it because we got Harwood and it didn't work so good and this is a carpet vacuum and I think it cleaned are carpets so good it made it look like new every time and weight isn't that bad think about the Dyson balls there just as heavy and these Kirbys have lasted for 50+ years and they still works and I thought that Dyson lasted long until I had a Kirby

I inherited a Kirby and I agree that they're overpriced. With that being said, I took it into Vac City to have it checked out and I was looking at the Miele vacuums and was considering purchasing one, but the owner told me that I already had the very best vacuum cleaner available so, I just took his word for it, but I'm going to be watching your reviews to educate myself before I buy any new vacuum cleaner.

I would like to know how the Kirby stands up against the rainbow. Because I'm looking for the cheapest most efficient vacuum I can get raising two children on a fixed income that's three times lower than the average person who is on a fixed income. I heard the rainbow doesn't ever need a vacuum back is a completely sealed? I also heard you can vacuum up water with the rainbow because it already has water in the bottom of the bowl. Which I think would be good for cleaning my fireplace Last but not least watch is going to release the least amount of dust and dirt as you are vacuuming.

vwsaiphone that’s awesome, Sebos are really good I agree, the older Dysons had solid plastic which would crack and break when out under pressure especially in the UK where we had the oldest Dysons they had very brittle plastic Dyson learnt their lesson and changed to more flexible plastic and now there’s not much that breaks on Dysons nowadays 😁 bend the plastic and it’ll flex rather than snap

See you perfectly explained why I will never buy one of these. I had to barrow my mother in laws it wouldn’t pick up cat litter wouldn’t clean the bare floors didn’t even try the stairs. I have four animals in a busy house hold and this just doesn’t make sense for me to buy this. I have a dyson cinetic animal and allergy while it’s not perfect it does a damn good job with performance and versatility. but the motor has had an issue and thankfully they are honoring the warranty and it didn’t cost me a dime to send it out to get fixed. I think I might go the Miele route once it breaks out of warranty was going to go the Riccar route but after watching the video where you had issues with them I decided not to.

Were you using the carpet head or hose? With the carpet head you need to make sure you have a good belt. These stretch over time and therefore, once stretched, do not spin the brush properly if at all. I change mine when I notice it is not picking up the bird seed properly. Also, use the toe touch height to your advantage. For example, for large seed, nuts, whatever gets thrown on the floor, I start my first pass on a high setting so it can pick these up, then do another pass at the setting I like and finish the job. Also, make sure the bag is not overfull. It is easy to forget. However, for cat litter, a Roomba (they now have suction) might be a great choice as you can schedule it to run without human intervention other than cleaning the bin.

Yes, I can clearly see that you definitely like Kirbys - not based solely on the content in some of your other videos about them, but principally based upon your criticisms. The unspoken desire in your heart is to see them make major steps forward - even if that means a decided rethinking of the design concept, and approach they have long hung on to.
