I had a Dupont knock off years ago as a young man. I didn't even know what a Dupont was at the time. I always wondered why the old men in the cigar shop would all stop and watch me light my cigar (and say things like you can't hide money.) 😂 I figured they were clowning on me, being a young cigar smoker. I figured out probably about 5-6 years later what was going on. It was a very, very good knock off, (black laquor , gold top) and sounded like a perfect ping. I just bought it because I liked it,

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the comparison. The enameled versions of the New Le Grand are more expensive than the Diamond Head Gold and Palladium versions, which seems ironic given they have the sort-after classic ping.

The ping tone change has more to do with the lid material/thickness than any sort of variation in the mechanism. That’s me guessing of course, with those prices it’s very possible that the mechanism is different.
