As many commenters have stated here, the lack of availability and wait times for the Prime nearly make it a pipedream for ownership. If that were not sufficiently discouraging, dealership markups on the Prime should be. In my case, our local Toyota dealership was marking up its Primes by $10,000. Our local Lexus dealership sold me the NX 450h at MSRP, for which I waited 6-1/2 months for delivery. In this auto buying environment, I considered the price paid and wait time acceptable. The bottomline: if you can get a Prime at MSRP in less than a year, or whatever your patience permits, go for it.
@letsgobrandon58002 жыл бұрын
Who needs a car so badly that they’d pay $10 k over sticker in any environment? Only a fool. Even paying MSRP will bite you later because when the market tanks, and it will, you’ll owe more on the car than it’s worth. As production ramps and catches up, those who overpaid will fell like fools.

@@letsgobrandon5800 I paid cash and MSRP for my last (in high demand) car and held onto it for 20 years ... no regrets. I bought the 2022 Lexus NX 450h for cash and plan to hold onto it 15-20 years, unless I expire first. Sure, I could wait another 2 years and "possibly" buy one for $2-5k below MSRP, but that would be 2 valuable years of my remaining life without the pleasure of driving a new vehicle more suitable to my current needs ... so again, no regrets. In reality, nearly all vehicles, except classics and museum pieces, are rapidly depreciating assets. For that reason, I could argue all car buyers are "fools" for buying a depreciating asset, regardless of its price or one's car buying prowess.

@@letsgobrandon5800 I would not pay 10k over either. However, it is unknown how long it will take until there is a plentiful supply of vehicles. Some say the dealers and manufactures like a tight supply regardless of the supply chain problems. I believe Toyota recently announced a cut in the projected supply of vehicles for the coming year. I don't like the idea of paying MSRP either. However, with high inflation, if you wait a year, invoice or dealer cost for the next model year might be more than the currnent MSRP.

Guess I was extremely lucky; every other dealership in my area wanted a markup of 5-10 grand. I live in northern Jersey, so the efficiency in electric mode varies for me with the seasons. In the summer I can get 3.5-4.0 miles/kWh, but in the winter it will fall to just 2.5-3.0 miles/kWh. I don’t really have any major complaints about the vehicle or how it drives; it’s not a stretch to say that this is the perfect balance between power and economy. The 2023 RAV 4 Prime in all models now comes standard with 6.6 KWH charging which will give you a full charge from a depleted battery in 2.5 hours with a 240 Volt charger. The RAV 4 Prime is the best SUV plug in electric all wheel drive vehicle available as no other manufacturer can match it thats why they are impossible to purchase at MSRP and at least a 1 year + waiting period to order a 2023 model. Is the 2023 RAV4 Prime still the best PHEV SUV at the moment? How does it compare with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Kia Sportage PHEV?
@davidgapp1457 Жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand the figures. My Rav4 Prime is now 1.5 years old. In that time I've never bested 3.1 miles per kwHr indicated. If you are getting 3.7 then your range should be around 53 miles. At no time have I gotten close to that figure (even with the A/C off). The best I've ever managed (based off the ODO indicated range) is about 46 miles. In practical terms, driving urban freeway, I return between 38 miles and 40 miles range (65mph to 75mph). BTW, having the A/C on does not discernibly impact the range - I suspect this is because the lithium battery takes more charge when the weather is warm/hot and that compensates for the extra draw of the HVAC. The steering is 'okayish' but not outstanding. The vehicle does not feel good if you have to swerve and the (stock) tires are certainly not designed for grip. Or braking. Because of the low-slung batteries, Toyota has 'jacked' the suspension on the Rav4 Prime. The result is that ground clearance is about the same as the normal hybrid, however the penalty is that the suspension feels overextended - as if Toyota really needed to do some more tune-up on the suspension. It is competent but braking and sudden maneuvers are unconvincing to say the least. The ride is relatively harsh. In general I don't like soft 'pudding' suspension because it seems to take away from road-feel and agility. However the Rav4 Prime manages 'harsh' without any of the benefits that usually accompany a firm suspension. Again, I think this is because the Prime was really an after-thought and the suspension lost out. Aside from these niggles, the car is great. However, I would not recommend the Rav4 Hybrid or Prime if you live anywhere cold and wet as there is a known issue with the electrical connection to the motor over the rear axle. Namely, the plastic boot surrounding the connection is prone to filling with debris/salt etc., which leads to wiring corrosion. The fix is expensive and Toyota are not proving very cooperative - you have to bitch to them very hard and if you are outside of warranty then you're s**t out of luck. Would I buy the Rav4 Prime again? Yes, however I am not as gung-ho as this reviewer. I live in Arizona so (almost) no rain, no snow, no salt. Consequently, the 'wiregate' issues doesn't really impact me. The vehicle is reliable to-date but the electric steering mechanism is beginning to make weird noises as the vehicle approaches full lock. Fortunately I paid for the extended warranty... In any case, buying the Rav4 is now moot thanks to Biden. The Rav4 Prime is manufactured only in Japan (unlike the ICE Rav4 and the Hybrid) so under the new rules you get nothing in the way of tax credits. Given that dealers are still trying to apply mark-ups, I would think carefully before buying a Rav4 Prime going forwards (mine collected the full $7,500 tax credit). As a result, if you buy the Rav4 Prime you are unlikely to recoup the difference in purchase price (through gas savings) over your ownership of the vehicle. In addition the vehicle is mechanically more complicated than the Rav4 ICE or Hybrid so I recommend buying the extended warranty and ditching the vehicle when that expires. Besides, by that time, I expect there will be PHEV's with a 100 mile range or the EV battery issues will have been sorted. Aside from fuel economy, the other great joy of the Rav4 Prime is the power. Oh my, it is good! The acceleration will leave almost all ICE cars and SUV's in the dust (save for expensive sports vehicles). The torque off-the-line is fantastic thanks to the electric motors. My other daily drive is a mid-engine, supercharged sports car so I really didn't want an SUV that drove like a wet sack of cement. Fortunately, the Prime does not disappoint! The build quality of the car is, as you would expect from a car assembled in Japan, simply perfect. I am hyper-critical and to-date I have not found anything, not the slightest blemish or misalignment to criticize. Not saying the US/Canadian Rav4's aren't good, but the Japanese build quality is simply outstanding. One minor point. The fog light that comes with the XSE trim is rubbish. Your first stop should be to buy a more powerful LED module. Swapping the lights out is an easy task - plenty of youtube self-help videos!

If you are going on a long trip and you are out of electricity and the engine switches to gas, The Rav4 Prime gas engine can recharge the electricity to 80%. The problem is that most users need help figuring out where to activate that feature. Plus, I don't know of another PHEV that has that feature. That's a big selling point, but I don't understand why Toyota does not promote that feature.

Buying rav4 prime like buying one get two: one hybrid and one electric. If you use rav4 prime in EV mode most of the time, when the battery degraded, you still have an almost brand new engine to use. Besides you don't have to maintain engine that much if you don't really use it. Battery is small and it should be cheaper to replace it.

I was lucky enough to get a RAV4 Prime last year. I love it. Would have been happy with the base model, could only get the top end model. I have to say I really do like the heads up display. Actually too much info on the instrument cluster and like the bare bones essential info on the heads up display.

Regretabbly the RAV4 Prime is one of the two known Toyota vehicles whose infotainment system firmware does NOT support external USB ODD (The other one being the Venza). Sad......
@imnotusingmyrealname45662 жыл бұрын
Wow that sounds super convoluted when some models don't support this. Why can't they just use the same components for every infotainment system when they are basically the same anyway?

Question, we live in Hawaii, so most of our driving is under 60 miles an hour. Our daily usage of mileage is about 35 miles. when calculating the MPGE at 96 or something from the epa, that’s for using all of the battery and all of the gas correct? So if most of our trips are pure electric, our MPG would actually be higher yeah? We have a big solar system

Owners manual material recommends adding at least five or six liters of fuel per year. I personally plan on using enough gas so that it doesn't sit in the tank for more than 5 or 6 months.

I doubt you will but id love you to do a vid on the new Dodge Hornet when it gets dropped. Personally I really dig that thing. Its alpha based so you know its going to drive sporty, the interior is upmarket because its lifted from Alpha, and the rear lights match my LC. I know i know. Well i bought a 19X so it would match my interior! The purse has to match the shoes... 😂

Supercharge increased rate in California so it's equivalent to $6/gallon compare to 40mpg ICE so EV does really save money on the long trip compare to rav4, not to mention longer time charging and availability of charging stations compare to gas stations

The only problem is where we live there are 2 charge station for free but it is a job itself getting them before they are occupied by TESLA. - 42 miles = 15,000 miles annually on just cheap, clean home electric power. - Gets by with a battery much lighter & cheaper than "pure" BEVs. - Never held hostage to public charging that's either occupied, ICED, vandalized or broken. - Never subject to a rainy night stuck at a public charger, trying to console your crying kids and whining doggos for 30-360 minutes (instead of a 3-minute fill up on gasoline). Don't you just love the ads now for BEVs showing beautiful, young, childless models at an available public charger, always in perfect daylight weather outside a trendy cafe in the hipster district? 😄

I live in Ontario Canada. I ordered mine in October 2021 and they told me not to expect it before 2025…… and I work at a Toyota plant that builds RAV4’s and the Lexus NX and RX. (I know these are built in Japan) you’d think Toyota would give some preference to the people that build their cars…..lol, think again. It’s really sad and the fact that they can’t source batteries to get anywhere near the demand they have for these is absolutely pitiful. They better do something and do it quickly or they’re going to get left behind in everyone else’s dust

@@alengreen589 Not really win-win mate. 😂 Anyway this is because Toyota buyers don't care and continue to buy Toyota. Chevy has really improved their interiors but Toyota buyers won't go there. Also with mid-size trucks the Tacoma looks to be underwhelming as hell with probably 265 hp and 309 lb-ft. The Colorado has 310 hp and 390 lb-ft and the GMC Canyon has even crazier 430 lb-ft. The hybrid just doesn't compensate for an inferior engine. It's just that Americans are so scared of turbos and think Toyota can do magic that they think the hybrid Tacoma will be better than the GM mid-size pickups.

We own two Rav 4 Primes 2021. It is plenty quick to 40 mph which is nice around town. It peters out 40 to 60 mph. I have had no issues accelerating to merge on interstates in EV and passing cars at freeway speeds. We are driving 85% of the time in EV only. I drive daily to work on the internet at 80 mph in EV and it handles great.

Let's talk value... in Feb. 2021 I leased a Honda Passport EX-L when Honda had a special of $329/MO lease, with taxes & fees I pay $367.01/MO. We don't drive far and when the lease is up we will have roughly 19,000 miles on it. I can then purchase the vehicle for $26,246, which I will do. This is almost 1/2 the cost of the RAV4 Prime. That's value...

dang the prime is about $10k more than the regular hybrid. lets say you keep it for 150k miles. do you actually save on gas money?...quick math. the $10k buys you 100,000 miles of gas @ $4 / gallon / 40 miles.
