The Japanese review also 100% confirms that it's a liftback, which isn't brought up in any press materials so far. He doesn't actually open it, but he examines every detail of the interior. I know this seems like a lame point to bring up, but the fact that this car also has a practical use case with a roomy and accessible cargo area is an enormous selling point.

@skybluemarshall

@DJ.1001 Civic hybrid only has Sport Mode, not S+ mode. I don't think they're similar, based on American reviews of the Civic. The American Civic hybrid reviewers praised the nice, firm electric motor launches, but they basically said, the simulated shifts and fake engine sounds at higher speeds and the general lack of responsive feelings, created an effect that was pretty bland and tame. One reviewer said that it would quickly become annoying and he would probably wish for a way to turn off the fake shifts. This Prelude reviewer appears to show something very different. The engine rev sounds are not fake. The engine is actually tacking up which causes the car to jerk or pull when it fake shifts. The reviewer seemed to love the realistic, seat of the pants feeling of the "shifts." I didn't get the impression that he wished he could turn them off. Neither transmission actually "shifts" in the technical sense of the word. However, the Civic shifts are much faker, because the engine rev sounds are completely fake and are piped into the cabin through sound speakers, therefore, the car cannot have any seat of the pants feel to it when it fake "shifts." In contrast, the Prelude engine actually hits preprogrammed higher rev settings and with Honda software magic, they can use those increased revs and torque to simulate "shifts" in such a way that they both sound and feel very real. I'm not a car expert nor am I a Honda expert. I'm only stating my understanding of what I think is happening, based on what I've heard different reviewers say.

This powertrain has no transmission; the electric motors are mated to the driving wheels via fixed gear ratio. Since there's no "automatic transmission", there's no hope of simply replacing it with a manual transmission. Sad for sure, but manuals are relinquished to a now defunct powertrain. There's always hope for simulated manuals similar to what Toyota is attempting to do but that's not for me at all. The manual lever isn't physically connected to anything. At that point, I'd much rather have a classic sports car on the side for the occasional "pure" drive, and keep my electrified daily driver for the bulk of my driving.

I had a 86 Prelude SI. It was a great car. I am glad Honda is bringing the name back. I am also glad it is a hybrid, not a pure EV. Maybe they will make a PHEV version ... I agree with your gear shifter comments. Why go to all the trouble of giving it a performance focus and use a button. Maybe they intend the drivers to use the steering wheel paddle shifters instead so the gear shifter might be considered redundant. My biggest complaint of hybrid tech (I have a 2010 Prius) is they lack of gearing. Honda seems to have fixed this even if it's not real gears, as long as it feels right.

Honestly, the fact this thing is a lift back might be enough for me to trade in my 04 6-6 Accord coupe. I had a situation where I tried to fit a new tv in my Accord, and it didn’t fit. Plus I make a 280 mile trip to see family once a month and driving a stick through traffic is REAL unpleasant after a while. I’d probably only lease it though, just because I’m sure Acura will either do an Integra/RSX GS-E variant with E-SH-AWD and better electric powertrain potential, or a Type S variant with the 2.0T from the Accord/CTR/ITS, with regular SH-AWD. Then they could wrap it all up with an HRC version that ditches SH-AWD, has all the ultra-light features and has a stick for driving and racing enthusiasts. Either way, finally some exciting prospects for 2-doors!

Ive said this numerous times, the prelude was always a place to " test bed" tech. This is no different, although I would always love to see a pure manual with a turbo 4 cyl either 2.0 or 2.4l and it be truly raw. I believe those times have sadly passed this car and the age of hybrid has stepped in. I am glad to see this hybrid is not a lame version that we have seen in the past and atleast settles the nerves as far as it being a dud car. I really think Honda needs to make a "heritage" or "purist" version and drop a turbo manual even if they still somehow keep the hybrid systems. Imagine a 2.0 turbo 6 speed prelude with hybrid assist making it "awd" on demand. Lets call it ohhhh idk... Type S? One can dream!

The CRZ is super underrated, really a “have to experience it yourself” kind of car to get a good gauge on how it drives. Almost every review of it is just some boring guy doing a straight line commute and saying it’s not sporty, without actually going down some windy roads. S+ in the CRZ primes the engine for Vtech and allows full boost right off the bat. More like a passing button but was great for exiting corners for a little more fun.

I don't think I'm swapping my '97 Type SH for this car. But if they put basically the same drive line from the Civic Si in this, I might consider it. I bought my Prelude specifically because I wanted a stick. Also, there's so much fun to be had with a high redline. I'm really drawn to the GR86 because it, like my '97, revs to over 7,000. One reason people still talk about the AP1 S2k because it revs to 9,000. The C30 and K20 are legendary and also rev to the freaking moon. They don't make fizzy engines anymore, and it's really a shame.

Honda new gen hybrids havent had the delay for years now. The are driven by a direct drive electric motor that makes roughly 160hp and 230ft/lb. The engine drives a generator that sends energy to the motor and the battery. Any "shifting" you feel is artificial. The engine changes revs to give you the sense of running through gears but in reality its just spinning a generator. The engine can couple to the wheels via a clutch and a geartrain, giving you a drive ratio similar to a final gear in a typical transmission. The engine coupling only occurs over roughly 40mph and at certain driving conditions (sustained speed and moderate accel/decel).

I think you're exaggerating - the latest Honda hybrids all fake shifts and they don't drone at a pinned redline unless you're brake torquing. This is a enhancement but it's not all that different.

It's a very pretty car, but there are still things that shock me. There's an obvious disharmony between the front and rear seats. On the other hand, I hope the dashboard will be changed and made more modern and sleeker, like the bodywork. It's not a question of mixing everything up: the Prelude and the Civic must be different and each has its own identity, not just on the outside !!

@fortheloveofnoise in all honesty, when i had the 92 Prelude, it seemed like a rwd platform fit the style of the car better. Long hood and whatnot. When the frs/brz came out later on in 2010s, it was like the Prelude package I really wanted. The GR86 is a great 35k car, no question asked there. Such a great chassis and perfect size

I’m so happy that this video literally proves that it will not come with a manual transmission, which was my point to a lot of people on Instagram and on KZbin this car will not come with a train with with a manual transmission. It will not there’s no reason for this car to come with the manual transmission and if it is a hybrid, there is no reason for that.

The car was designed in North America and was first shown at the Los Angeles Motor Show. It got the most press in the region that they expect to sell the car. Nissan did the same thing with the GT-R and the Z, especially the Z, which wore the Fairlady Z emblem on the trunk in all of Nissan’s press images despite the car being left hand drive.

I wouldn’t say that the simulated shifts are “Honda innovation”. It’s more like Hyundai Ionic 5 N innovation. I like that they can have that option for people who still crave the feeling of traditional ICE cars.

The S+ trademark was previously in the CRZ. In that car, it means more electric boost to pass on the highway if there is battery juice. Could they use other existing trademarks for different mechanisms, such as EarthDreams, VTEC, or ECON?

My 2024 Integra Aspec CVT act this way about changing the ratio but the ratio is less fun compared at this small NSX. Brembo caliper looing good, Type R and NSX into a Prelude lol. The fake sound of the NSX configuration sound good and this eCVT configuration would help to be a 200ch fun car. Acura RSX looking good so far. Hybrid or 1.5T or 2.0T can do. SH-AWD would be nice but maybe never a reality. RIP NSX

Been driving the hybrid civic for over a year and the delay is really bad. Not only that there's a long delay, the duration of the delay is also inconsistant. The only way to drive it in a more spirited way is quick tabbing on the accelerator as if you're driving an old turbo car.
