So what about the recently trademarked Acura RSX? This is tricky. Acura has abandoned their hybrids. Does this mean the Honda Prelude will be the 2.0L hybrid, and the Acura the 1.5 Turbo/Manual? Optional Type R/Type S with 2.0t should be the aspirational trim...

yeah I'm blown away Acura is just sitting there stagnating their powertrains. I feel like this Prelude should inherit Acura's 2.0T 10-speed automatic SH-AWD powertrain as the upgraded powertrain. It's make it heavier, likely on-par with a 4-door Civic, but at least it would differentiate it. The base-trim Prelude could proudly get the 2.0 eHev from the Civic; an excellent powertrain. As for bringing back the RSX nameplate...I mean...I wouldn't. Too much going on in this segment at Honda/Acura. The Civic is such an excellent car and the Integra is not much more for $10k on top of the already pricey Civic. Then the Prelude is a 2-door Civic. It needs to get sporty to be relevant. The RSX? A more expensive Prelude? Ouf. I guess if I was Honda, this is what I would do. Civic : Excellent car. Get rid of the 1.5T CVT powertrain altogether. Make the 2.0 eHev the only available powertrain and lower its starting price. Civic Si gets the 2.0T 6-speed manual with 250-260hp axed on driving pleasure. Civic Type R can remain where it is at 320hp 6-speed manual since it's holistically it's own thing, axed on track performance. Integra : Gets rid of that 1.5T CVT and 2.0 eHev everything. I would actually downgrade the Integra Type S. No longer a track-ready car. Gets the Type-R's 320hp 2.0T, mates it with the 10-speed with SH-AWD. It's an S3 compretitor, axed on luxury performance. If someone wants a track car, they get the Civic Type R. If they want a posh performance car, the Integra Type S. No more manual in the Integra, sadly. But if I had to cut it somewhere, it would be here. TSX and Accord : They get a new platform. Longitudinal, rear-wheel drive. Accord becomes a sports sedan, TSX becomes a proper 3-series competitor. They would need a based powertrain; series/parallel hybrid system with 200-ish hp just like the front-wheel drive hybrid system, just turned 90-degrees. Upgraded powertrain would be a PHEV with 260-280hp and 15-18 kWh / 60km of range and e-axle up front for all-wheel drive. Accord gains a liftback, TSX becomes a wagon. I'd bring back the Honda Fit to the North American market with its current 1.5 hybrid powertrain. No reason that car left our shores. It was insanely popular here. We all want cheap electrified cars? Well then this car is already built and sold elsewhere. Just make it available here. And ya know what I'd do? I'd drop the Civic Si's 2.0T 6-speed manual into it too as a Fit Si. Maybe make that 1.5 eHev into the Civic to lower its pricepoint even farther. I wouldn't bring back the Prelude or RSX nameplates. But maybe I would bring back the S2000 nameplate that would feed off of the development of the Accord/TSX rear-drive platform and somehow twist that 320hp Type R powertrain 90-degrees in there, as long as it can be in the 1,300kg range. So this way, you make the best out of : 1.5 eHev (transverse layout) 2.0 eHev (transverse/longitudinal) 2.0T 250-260 hp 6MT (transverse layout) 2.0T 320hp 10AT SH-AWD (transverse layout) 2.0T 320hp 6MT (transverse/longitudinal) 2.0T PHEV (longitudinal layout) you'd get rid of the twin-turbo V6 and the 1.5T CVT. No more CVTs across the board. The twin-turbo V6 is a good engine but I'd save it for the larger Acura products like the MDX, or...even bring back a RWD luxury/performance Acura Legend which competes against executive-sized European cars.

The prelude has always showcased new tech. That's what they were designed to do. I definitely think it will have EAWD. I'm guessing it will have a mildly refreshed version hybrid setup as to what they have now. Probably around 230-250hp. It's a bummer no stick, but I'm guessing the year after this comes out they will bring a type S, or Si, or type SH out with more power and possibly a manual. The main thing I want that goes absolutely against the prelude name is a hatchback. It looks like a coupe, so I wouldn't pay the money for it just because I need my daily to be practical and carry things so I don't have to rely on my truck with little loads. Hey kirk hope you see this. Im sure you are just as impressed with the eCVT from Honda. I find that with a lighter vehicle like the prelude it will feel great. The regen braking will feel so nice going into turns on back roads and how their torque vectoring keep their hybrids so level you forget about any excess weight. I dont see how a manual could work with this since it would just replicate the engine braking with regen. They could just have it as an option but it would be very rarely used due to the eCVT being the heart of the driving experience. The performance advantage also is favored by the eCVT with no distractions and fully control of speeds with one pedal driving. My final input and im curious what anybody else would think is that a manual makes you feel like a part of the car and these newer hybrid systems in a performance setup would make you feel like you ARE the car.

I dont think thats too hard and all 3 cars Im suggesting cater to different drivers. I'd probably want the performance AWD hybrid, so I could potentially leverage good mileage and have some performance when needed. Im not going to track it. I want a really nice affordable-reliable GT. The base one would be for folks who want a nicer looking daily driver thats smaller and more nimble than a civic and gets similar efficiency. The R would be for folks where the Civc R just isnt "enough". A true sports-track car that would hopefully have a bit better performance due to lighter weight and size. Might've had at a chance at bright future if they'd make it a liftback hatch like the Integra. There's tremendous pressure in this market for all vehicles to have a utilitarian business case now in order to garner interest and any hope of survival. Making sporty cars more practical and usable is the only way to keep them alive, because people can't afford multiple task-specific cars anymore. Buyers are slowly, year after year, being forced to compromise on whatever has the best practical use case, which is why you see manufacturers willing to build fewer types of cars, and fewer options to choose from, with each new generation. People can barely afford homes to park multiple cars in, let alone the cost to purchase them. And to top that all off, they're sharing vehicles with another driver too. There's a reason rideshare companies are thriving as well, it's not rocket science. The middle class who can afford fun products like these is being whittled away to non-existence. And with very few exceptions, car companies can't afford to make lots of different products (e.g. little coupes with tiny trunks) anymore either. Sales of this thing will be small enough to count on two hands, and its chances of long term survival are slim. On the plus side, that should make it even more collectible.

If the power plant is a non charge hybrid, I’m fine with that. But if it’s a full blown EV - then a hard pass. From the side view, looks like a 350z. Not a bad thing, just an observation in my opinion.

We have a 2008 TL /w 160,000 mi, 1999 Integra manual /w 190,000 mi, 1997 Prelude manual /w 230,000 mi. I had an 2002 TL and got 240,000 miles out of it, ran like new but rotted out, 2004 Pilot, sold it, 2012 Fit, hated it, and a 1999 Accord that rotted out at 250,000 mi. We love them. I would love a new prelude, but if it's a hybrid or an automatic, I will pass it by. I want a standard. Give me fuel, give me fire... My next car will be a standard. Every Honda/Acura we had suffer transmission failures, and spent enough on that to buy a car. I refuse to buy a hybrid, period. I also hate direct injection. It will kill the engine prematurely. It's looking like every manufacturer is doing direct injection. How stupid, mixing gas in the oil, high pressure system prone to fail, and a risk of spraying gas under the hood and starting a fire. Ad to that, small engines /w turbo's. They are designing cars that will fail in 100,000 miles. And what is this parking brake button crap? I learned how to drive in the snow, and with front wheel drive, you can recover from a slide or turn using the emergency brake to slide the rear only. How can you do that with a push button? I will likely need to stick to pre 2017 cars. All the new stuff is high tech over priced crap.

I wish they had a separate hybrid version and called it like CR-Z gen 2 or Insight gen 4 and give it more wacky styling. Then have this car with the 1.5t or 2.0t, but then again barely anyone is buying 2 doors these days so releasing two of em is pretty much financial suicide in this automotive climate. Plus my hope for a new S2000 is pretty much dead now.

It doesn't always turn out like this (laughs). Imo, this 2026 will be dated upon release. It'll be FWD amd the exact same current Civic 2.0 e-HEV engine and power train but with an improved tune to (est) 240bhp. Thats what Honda do, look at the Type R's. They've been running the exact same (very good) engine since 2016, Honda just modify tweak and improve the internals, breathing and exhaust. In the case of the new Prelude they'll just adjust the software to provide more power and 'sportiness' profile. I still feel this will be a great car, at a well judged price point, with a coupe body shape few else are doing. So it'll selll well imo. It's the Coupe equivalent of an MX-5. Fun sporty and obtainable, looking to the future, but essentially a bit behind the times for 2026.

front and rear look like the new Prius, and with the only hybrid system I guess this is made to directly compete with toyota.
@tonycosta330213 күн бұрын
I agree, but that side profile is not doing it for me. The Prius is far more attractive as is the 86/BRZ. I’d be interested in Prelude, but not one that looks like that. Lots of nice details, but it doesn’t come together for me.
@bmbmunoz213 күн бұрын
@tonycosta3302 I do think the profile looks worse than the prius, it's giving me 350z/370z vibes. I do think it will look better in person but I think I would still get the prius over this for practicality

@scotturich I just got a feeling they're more focused on tech and making sure it's a hybrid instead of the driving experience of a high revving VTEC motor with some power and 6 speed manual. Maybe I'm wrong. If I'm wrong I might but one. I had a 1999 prelude and it was awesome

Don't get me wrong; I'm happy to see these old nameplates making comebacks and the Prelude has a special place in my heart. That said, and maybe it's my age, I don't see much point to a front-wheel drive 2-door compact, unless it's tiny. This Prelude, while it looks great, I'd just get the FAR more versatile and spacious Civic which has the same hybrid powertrain. There likely won't be much difference in weight and fun-to-drive factor. I felt the same way about the 2-door Civic and Accord; totally awkward wastes of sheetmetal; just add some rear doors and you gain massive amounts of ergonomics. If they were going to bring back the Prelude, I actually would have wanted them to build it as a proper rear-wheel drive sports car. It's far more expensive to produce a dedicated rear-wheel drive platform which is why they didn't do it, and I get it. I guess it's just not for me, like the Scion Tc. I do love the 2.0 hybrid powertrain in the Civic. There's a heavy chance that it's my next car. But if the Prelude was going to make such a sporting statement, an even more impressive powertrain would have helped to differentiate it from the Civic. ...I mean otherwise, just get the Civic. I do love the S2000-inspired steering wheel though.

Worst of all the paint will peel off with no primer under it. Might cost $20,000 to strip it, prime it, and paint it.

I still hate the roofline. That's a roofline for a Z or a Supra, whereas Preludes had actual one that allowed for rear headroom. I suppose they wanted to differentiate it from the Civic, but a roofline like the Civic or Civic Hatch would have bee more practical and also more in keeping with past gens of the nameplate

Everyone needs to settle down. Here’s what I believe and know based off being IMO the number one Honda fan. I drive an Acura. Look at the Honda HRV. Or look at the Acura Integra. Ok now realize like I did. Acura said back when the second generation TLX Type S debut, that Acura was going back to performance. Ok, then what happened? Honda decided to focus on electric and hybrids. Acura will be the last of their product producers to make ICE vehicles due to their ambitions on performance. Acura took the Civic Hatchback and created the new Integra with it. Then Acura took the HRV and just released the new Acura ADX Aspec Advance. Get it? Its a performance oriented HRV. So believe me when I write, Acura will take this new Honda Prelude and release a performance ICE vehicle. Likely going to be named the new Acura RSX Type S with a stick. Get your wallets ready boys.
