I just bought this exact washer in white MHW5500FW. The manual says when once start is touched and held, it will perform a self-test on the door lock mechanism and the sensing light will come on. You will hear a click, the drum will make a partial turn, and the door will click again as it unlocks briefly. The door will click one more time when it locks again. Once the door has locked the second time, the washer will begin tumbling and add water. The sensing process will continue throughout the cycle.... My question is this: On my washer (and yours) the sensing light does not come on when the door locks the first time. However, your sensing light flashes as it fills and mine literally flashes for a brief second while starting to fill as the door locks the second time. The only time mine flashes once per second is about 20 minutes before the cycle ends on average when it must be sensing suds, etc... I watched another video and that washer performed identical to mine in regards to the sensing light and others have commented elsewhere that theirs doesn't come on either. The washer seems to wash great. I just want to know if my behavior with the sensing light is correct or yours is, or nether. lol. I called Maytag and they simply read from the manual and were no help. Help!

Hey realtoast - Any word from your wife on this? Called Maytag and even they cannot answer. lol. The funny thing is that in this review and on mine as well as the one that acts like mine, the sensing light is supposed to light (according to the manual) when the door locks the first time. Neither of them does. Mine behaves as above.

@@brianpipenur2148 Sorry! We read your comment a couple times and were not sure what exactly you were saying the problem was. Reading your second comment, it seems that the issue may be more with how the manual [perhaps incorrectly] describes what is actually happening than the performance of the washer. Or, are you saying that because the initial sensor light doesn't perform as described, the sensing process must also not be performing? It seems like you're happy with the washer's performance, but just questioning why the light isn't matching the performance description. We never had sensing lights before and hadn't really paid attention to it until you asked. The washer seems to be doing everything we expected (i.e. cleans our clothing).

Good job recording this Maytag front loader; It's difficult to see through the reflection and glare of the door window, the light did improve visibility. A rotating polarizing filter on the camera would help to eliminate the glare in these situations. Thanks again for your efforts. Front loading washers are the way to go if high efficiency (at least in water and soap) is the goal. The clothes get thoroughly saturated and are constantly tumbling through the soapy water. This machine is also very quiet mechanically other than the sound of the clothes tumbling. The spin speed looks really fast and the stable drum is another advantage to the front load washer. 47 minutes is rather long cycle for a light soil wash, I'd be interested to know what a normal soil wash cycle time would be. All in all this Maytag looks to be a competent washer, I hope the long term reliability measures up to the old Maytag reputation.

Rotating polarizing filter is on my want list. In the normal cycle, there are four clicks for soil level: :53, 1:00, 1:00, 1:45 I do not know why there are two 1hr options.

Never over extend your self on these types of purchases. I would expect more than 10 years on these units but you never know. I always tell my customers that if it would kill you (make you feel bad) to buy a new set after only 5 years then you should reconsider buying a set that will not break the bank. I would feel comfortable with this brand because there are plenty of technicians in my area that know the product and there is a parts house near by that stocks plenty of parts for this brand. If you already pulled the trigger on this pair, do not worry, with proper care it can last you a long time.

Mark40511: I had a Whirlpool Duet front loader made in Germany. I returned it because I thought it made too much work, and I also already had a classic Frigidaire 1-18. I miss that front loader and almost hate myself for sending it back. I still have the Frigidaire, and I always will even though I have an HE top loader currently in service. For all I know, the Duet is now probably Toyota fenders and side panels. It was a good machine, and it did a great job.

I heard other people complain about the noise coming from the drain pump. I feel it is not that much louder than the other brands but that is just an opinion. It is a measurable parameter but I have not seen specs on it. In a large household you may not notice it, but a single person living in a large house might feel it is too loud. On a front loader, just about all of them have a similar electric drain pump.

When the clothes are sitting in the bottom of the drum on a normal cycle can you see a visible water line at least to the bottom of the door or just below the gasket? I like the idea of a front loader and low water usage but I can’t deal with no water. My whirlpool barely gets the clothes wet and there is no water in the bottom. A new pressure sensor failed to fix the issue. Without water in the bottom of the draw for the close to splash into the close just don’t get clean. Thank you for your time.

I'm starting to notice less and less water in front loaders. Due to your observation, I have been showcasing the two top models of Electrolux front load washers. Even though the water level is very low, these machines have a recirculating pump that pumps water form the bottom of the drum and sprays it over the clothes while tumbling. This moves water and soap through the clothes. I think it makes up for the lack of water. It also accomplishes saturation very fast.

European front load washers are filling with more water during the wash action and a visible fill during rinses. Although this washer has not a visible water level i think that it get the job done better from top loaders. Friction and cascading of the clothes during the cycle get the spots removed with less energy and water.
@BroccoliBeefed

Craig Hellberg . Craig you can open up the top and adjust a nut or bolt which will make it fill with more water. There are KZbin videos non here about it. I agree. USA models are calibrated to use too little water from the factory, causing poor rinsing, poor washing, odor and mold issues. I want the clothes at least sloshing in a puddle of water, not just tumbling damp.

If you lift the top off you should be able to adjust the pressure sensor with a screwdriver. If you raise it too much the clothing won't toss as well but you should be able to find a good level.

33:52 drain starts, 34:15 pump running sounds like there is no water being pump. It does sound loud when it is pumping air. Most machines will continue to pump during the spin cycle so that the water being extracted can be pump down the drain. 36:39 pump turns off for about 2-5 seconds and then it clicks on again. I'm not sure if this is louder than other machines all though. 39:12 pump turns off again

My husband is an appliance repairman and he says that front-loading machines always clean better than top-loaders, because the clothes are rubbing against each other so much more, but he said a front-loader, conversely, will be harder on the clothes for the same reason -- the rubbing. He said often people complain about the HE washers because we all grew up seeing a lot of water in a machine and it just takes time to adjust our thinking and get used to seeing less water used to get the same result. Same with the economy water in toilets today -- we're just not used to it.

I looked at the parts catalog and there is no easy way to do it. I can confirm with a technician on Monday. In most cases the front whole front panel needs to be removed, to do that the door bellows (tub gasket boot) clamp needs to be removed. Most American brands have this problem. Speed Queen and I believe GE have access panels to the pump clean out.

LG & Samsung also make it to where the filter can be accessed, without having to remove the entire front panel. They also have a tiny hose that allows you to drain the machine of standing water, before you unscrew the filter.

I have not had any unhappy customers associated with this model. One of the reasons I like this washer is how it fills with water. It pours water over the load, for some reason manufactures are saturating the clothes from the bottom by filling the tub from below the wash basket. This is a good thing because it dilutes the detergent better before saturating the clothes. On very heavy loads, I prefer pouring water over the load to make sure the clothes get fully saturated. Being a dealer of many brands, I cannot pull you from a model I represent to another brand. Maytag does have a better parts distribution system and more technical support than the Korean brands. I have never sold a brand that never had a problem. So, which one is easier to have repaired? Maytag/Whirlpool is one of those brands that fall into that category. Thanks for your comment and please let us know how you like your new machine.

I actually hate when the washer fills from below the tub. My LG washer (don't know the model at the moment, but it's the cheapest model from 2011, & bought in early 2012 from Home Depot) fills that way. Because of that, it took forever to fill up, & at the original setting, not all the clothes got wet. After watching a few KZbin videos, I saw where the water pressure switch is located, & adjusted it little by little. It's a big screw, with a red tab on it. I got mine set to where it's just below the door, & still can open it, if needed. So now, after about 5 - 10 minutes in the cycle, it keeps filling, until all the clothes get wet, & the water level is maintained. So even at 3/4 of the way up with clothes, I sometimes see some water splashing around as they're being tumbled. As for my old Frigidaire from 1999, it filled by spraying the water directly on the clothes, into the tub. So it got clothes a lot wetter, faster, than just by a rising effect. So far, it's holding up after 5 years with no mechanical problems. I should mention, that I got the cheapest LG front loader in 2012, and mine doesn't have the turbo wash (where it sprays the clothes with water from the bottom of the tub, directly on the clothes during the tumbling action), or a steam wash feature. I however like that my washer only uses 5 amps, & can also use my matching dryer (also uses 5 amps) at the same time (some sets need each appliance, including gas dryers to be on their own circuits, because when combined, they either reach 20 amps, or exceed 20 amps).
