I lived in Lisbon for more than 6 years (2010-2017) near here. People live their lives more outside of their homes than they do in like America. You don’t jump in your car to go everywhere, you walk. You walk to the market, to the squares, to the cafe’s. You ride the trams, buses, the metro. You don’t just go in your house and stay there most of the time. Most people don’t have central heat and air. Usually heat one room to relax in in cold weather, open windows and go outside when it’s hot. Lisbon is lovely place to live, more simple, more calm lifestyle. I had the most wonderful time of my life there 🤗😍. I love this house, love that neighborhood

Being a Lisbon resident and a lover of houses with small footprints I have been interested in this house since it was first published in architecture websites. I had the same reservations expressed in many comments regarding the full concrete atmosphere and the safety and comfort of some of the features (for a family home). Fortunately, I was able to visit this house during Lisbon Open House 2019. What doesn't show well in video and photos is that parts of the house are in light colored epoxy flooring and others are lush beige carpeting (when was the last time you saw a modern house with carpeting?!). This helps the house feel much more airy (epoxy) and much more cosy (carpeting). In this context the concrete feels very appropriate. Also stairs, ledges and circulation are all expertly judged, it felt perfect for a family with kids. This is an amazing project and i would like to congratulate all that where involved.
@jackstrubbe7608 Жыл бұрын
As a retired landscape architect (I once worked with Halperin and Associates) I have no aversion to the concrete. I do need it broken up somewhat, however, with art and plants. Pencil cactus near the several windows, for example, would be in keeping with the unbroken airiness of the open spaces and give relief with spots of green.

Definitely needs more windows onto the street to get a bit more light in and something to cover up some of the concrete; while there are parts of the house where the bare concrete works, the bedrooms in particular need something to soften it. Having said that, there are several things I like about the house. The fridge etc. embedded in the walls so they don't take up as much floor space is cool. The split between the office and entrance hall with a change in level rather than a wall is clever and I like the bench that turns into a desk. My favourite feature is probably the moving glass ceiling to access the roof terrace. I'm not sure I'd put plants over the entire area though; shade is good but sometimes it's nice to sit in the sun.

agree with you guys. neverthreless it's a brilliant use of space in a proper modernista design with lovely elegant details like the railing on the first floor or the mirror window but the result of this concrete minimalist modernism in the whole house is scary... totally wrong material uuse on top of it all, this mania with raw concrete has to stop! its not beautiful, it's certainly not comfortable (air drienesss/humidity issues, bad acoustics or questions concerning concrete as a sustainasble material - co2 footprint???) for example the bedroom of the kid feels like a prison cell rather than a child's bedroom. not surprising if she'll have personality problems when grown up... to summarise it, modern minimalism = sensory deprivation

Exactly. It's pretty far south, and dry in the summer. Nights can get chilly in the winter. So I can see why they wouldn't need or want a ton of windows. In places as sunny as Lisbon, after awhile you need a respite from the sun. They average 2,806 hours of sunshine per-year, compared to the northern half of Europe, where sunshine duration is around 1,500 hours per-year.

However, it lacks warmth and personality with that stark design paired with the concrete. It feels too much like being in some kind of institution like a prison. A prison with beautiful views and nice bathrooms. lol I would much rather play up the boat connection and deck it out with wood and a Mediterranean nautical theme.
