Here's my list.. 1: color picking 2: the paper no matter what I do.. Always warps and buckles, 3: shading, uu I always get blooms of water.. 4: adding details.. It's like after the first base color it goes to the poop.. Those are my top four..

When using actual aquarelle paints I have a hard time getting the colours saturated enough. I guess I'm too impatient. I sometimes like the cheaper versions better because they give more colour from the start (I know they suck in the long run). Also, I don't know if this is a thing or not... but I have no black in my aquarelles, and it's hard to mix the right amount of colours to get black (and the same version of black) every time. Phew... long comment. XD

@@msDanielp369 Well no, just a lot of watercolor paintings are really expressive with less details. Even when you search 'watercolor art' there are very few results that have extremely detailed pieces. They're still really good, it's just extremely obvious that it's a watercolor painting. If someone asked me what medium was used with this eye painting and I didn't know it was watercolor, I would've probably said oil, acrylic or gouache before I guessed watercolor.

I hate when people do "Do's and Don'ts" videos and just go all ham and careless on the don't versions...of course it won't turn out nice if you don't care about what you're doing. That's because the "don't" painting, as shitty as it is, is an actual watercolor painting while the "do" painting is the product of someone who thinks that a brush is a defective pencil. Watercolor is about finesse and bold strokes. The clearest indication that you don't understand the medium is when you start burying your painting under gouache and colored pencil "highlights."

These techniques are good, but much more suited to realistic painting with watercolour. For loose work you do need to work entirely differently.

crucibelle - Belle du Pont - The title of this video is “Do’s and don’ts - How to paint with watercolour.” From that title alone, this video is misleading those new to the medium. A lot of the techniques Kirsty mentions NOT to do absolutely can be done (and should be done to experiment given the versatility of the medium.) Watercolour is a very diverse medium, much more than any other medium, so it’s not obvious to those NEW to watercolour, who Kirsty aimed the video at, that some of the don’ts are not really correct in that they can also be “Do’s.” Soaking the paper for example (which Kirsty advises NOT to do more than once) is actually a wonderful way to work with watercolour and soaking the paper also can be used in realism, but someone new to the medium who follows Kirsty wouldn’t know that by watching this video. The title should really state “Here are some techniques to paint realistically with watercolour” and it should not be a “do and don’t” basis because a lot of the don’ts mentioned can certainly be done, and are commonly done by professional watercolourists. So, as an experienced watercolourist, I am advising people new to the medium, and this video demonstrates Kirsty herself is relatively new to the medium, so I hope she will understand why I am saying this as she progresses with it. There is no need to be rude.

I understand the popularity of the "do and don't" video name and that may be why she named it as such(for searchable views) but if she were very experienced with the medium then her advice would have been much different in the video. This was also really more of a mixed media lesson as well.

you can have your opinion, but i really disagree. There is a difference between a loose style, which is intentional and structured and actually takes skill. These look good. there is also hyperrealism. The dont eye is neither. It look bad, the colors are muddy, and there are many unintentional patches and lines. I get the style you are talking about it, but that is not it.

I do think stylised portraits take more creativity than copying from a picture, as when you’re drawing something “stylised” it’s closer to something “original” something that is conceived from your vision. I’ll happily go try a “loose style” and reply back when I’m done.

I really have to ask you ... where did you learn all these techniques and skills?! I majored in Fine Arts and yet NONE of my teachers ever imparted this kind of specific in formation to us - (ok.. there was ONE exception - a drawing teacher who taught us proportions of the face & gave us challenging assignments, but outside of him, I don't even know how all the others qualified to become paid teachers! They didn't really offer anything near the in-depth content you've covered here.) I never knew you painted in layers in watercolor ... I always thought it had to be done at once... and I didn't know you could add colored pencil/pastels afterwards, either - I guess I just thought they wouldn't blend well & that the different compounds wouldn't repel eachother somehow. I've never worked with Gouache before and should get me some ... But what a difference layers make for precision lines & shapes! You sure have a lot of patience, too, to work through each step. It takes quite of bit of "technical concentration" throughout the process which I find a little taxing more than relaxing. I tend to enjoy the process of a more immediate reward, I suppose - sketches that capture the essence of the moment - along the lines of caricature or semi-cartooning, and papercrafts/card-designing. HOWEVER, I've always wanted to learn painting (water color and acrylics - won't ever bother with oils again ... just too messy & time-consuming to clean up), cuz I want to tackle mastering the basics if I can - for the sake of acquiring that skill for my artistic tool box so I can incorporate it to other art mediums. Thanks again for all your videos!

it's too realistic. just take a photo. it's no different than those people that use all kinds of media. Watercolor is fluid. Art is supposed to be where your brain fills in the gaps. No real art is so perfect. just take a picture. your "don't" painting is so much better than your "do". If you want realism, stay away from watercolors.

However there are still quite a lot of things for any style, I wouldn't say they are only for: like paper, adding too much water, scraping with brush, building up color, mix-medians and letting the piece dry can apply to almost all watercolor styles.

Of course you are very talented, but in the end I really like the Don't much more. It looks more relaxed and not so decent (I do not know how to describe it, but I just like it more if it's just painted that way.) I'm sorry for my bad English ^^

I'm impressed, lots of people on the comments criticizing the video but she's actually showing lots of great tips and techniques, and her "don't" eye really gathers the most common mistakes. Of course a person will hardly make all the mistakes at the same time, but the point of the video is showing what you might be doing wrong and how you can improve. If you have no intention of improving at all, why even watch it? If you paint like the don't eye and you're happy with it, you do you, but why complain here on the comment section? This video helps a lot of people who want to learn, and shows the way out to several difficulties that are pretty common. I've been painting for years and it was extremely helpful for me.

황금 막내 j.k. There is no superior watercolor. There are tubes and pans, and they both usually have good amounts of pigment, but you normally use less paint if you use pans, and tubes can be better for large projects.

I know adding colored pencil over watercolor is fine and works great but sometimes I want to look at a watercolor painting and think, "Wow, that was done with just watercolors, cool." Not yours, but other artists on yt put up vids on "w/c" and then at the end sneak in some pencil to finish it up and I feel a little tricked because they didn't mention it in the description or anything. I mean I click on something because I see a final result picture and a title that reads "watercolor painting" then it turns out to be mixed media. I'm not against it at all and this isn't aimed at this video at all, it's just that it feels like I have to really dig for a w/c painting that's actually a w/c painting. Not just a w/c underpainting. All that being said, pastels work really great over w/c. They really smooth things out and can add a misty effect easily. They also can be mixed with water if you experiment with it. They'll dry and still be somewhat erasable and blendable to an extent. Mixing pastels with water can allow you to use a brush for fine detail. Anyway, pastels are awesome to use over w/c as well as colored pencils. Happy experimenting!

When I see w/c speedpaints where they add pencil at the end I only think of it as touch ups. I feel like you over think about it a little too much.

I understand what you're saying, you're saying you appreciate that mixed media works really well but you want to learn how to do those things with watercolour just because you really want to master it. And I don't think people should be critising you for feeling that way because once you do master watercolour, you will be able to more with it as well, even if it might be a little harder. I would suggest looking for videos by more traditional painters. They will probably use a lot more layers and watercolor specific techniques and tools which could help you grow a more sophisticated understanding of the medium if that's what you're after
