Just an FYI. I am a scientist and inventor by trade (chemistry, biologically active substances, instrumentation, other things). I do art as a hobby. Not all fixatives are the same. Modern Spray Art Fixatives consist of at least two elements and good ones have four elements: 1. Carrying solvent (to dissolve everything) 2. Polymeric resin (usually polyacrylic or polyurethane, can be other substances) 3. UV Light Absorber 4. Light Stabilizer The stabilizer is very important. Not all “fixatives” have them. Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are chemical compounds containing an amine functional group that are used as stabilizers in plastics and polymers. HALS do not absorb UV radiation, but act to inhibit degradation of the polymer by continuously and cyclically removing free radicals that are produced by photo-oxidation of the polymer. This is all very simple and summarized by four cases. ONE If you do NOT spray a fixative, then the art work will smudge, the dyes will oxidize catalyzed by light - and the color will fade. TWO If you do spray a fixative then the art will not smudge. However, if it does not have UV light absorber, then the color will fade. THREE If the fixative has a UV light absorber, then the color will not fade and the art work will not smudge. However, the polymer WILL eventually photo-oxidize and turn yellow. It might take a long time, 50 to 100 years, or more (depending on the environment), but it WILL photo-oxidize. FOUR If the fixative has a UV light absorber AND a Light Stabilizer, then the work won’t smudge, the colors will not fade and the polymer will not photo-oxidize and turn yellow. Up to you, your choice.

I have a set of them... they are excellent. The end result depends greatly on the type/quality of paper you use and how heavy handed you are when applying them. I used Prismacolor for quite some time, but when they switched to manufacturing them in Mexico, the quality suffered greatly. They are now difficult to sharpen, without breaking the cores. Additionally, I found that a lot of the cores are off center.

Trust me, any artist who uses colored pencils on a regular basis and tried those 3, wouldn't do that. I'm german, I've used Polychromos for many years (I grew up with Faber-Castell pencils in general), and for me they are the most perfect pencil. But I use them together with watercolors, alcohol markers or ink. So them being rather translucent and less blending is exactly what I need. Especially the white pencil, that is perfect for lighting up but not being opaque. Still, for an artist who uses pencils only, especially a portrait artist, Caran d'Ache are superior. They just have this typical wax based pencil blending and creaminess. In general, every german artist will admit that french art supplies, especially the pro versions, are top notch. And Caran d'Ache may be a swiss company, but as the name already suggests, they are from the french part of the country.

As I agree with the majority of the things you said, I also want to add/correct some things. Yes, the pencils are extremely good, but I don't like the comparison with Polychromos, as they are VERY different pencils. I find that both pencils are equally good, as they serve different purposes. I honestly couldn't go without any of these two brands, because Polychromos are not only good for detail, but they also have a much wider colour range, with almost just as good lightfastness. So for me, both are equally good, for the reasons mentioned above, and to be completely honest, the Luminance are just so so expensive, that the majority of young artists such as myself could not afford them. That's why I just buy about 4-5 at a time, to complete my set :).

I would like to add that, contrary to what many people think, Polychromos is not a plural! One pencil is not a 'Polychromo'! And Arches paper is pronounced 'Arsh'. Just a note on lightfastness. The 100 year lightfast rating is only applicable under museum conditions: that is, controlled humidity, lighting, and strict controls over atmospheric pollution levels. So when you hang your paintings, Don't hang them in bright sunlight. Do make sure that they are hung in a dry room - ie away from tumble driers, indoor washing lines 'clothes driers, kitchen or bathroom: if the house is old and suffers from damp, or is on a busy main road, these issues are important. Store your pictures in folders with acid-free sleeves, and in a dark cupboard. Do use UVA protective glass when you frame them, to protect them from UVA - which causes the colour fade. Don't get upset with the company if some of your colours do fade a little. The information on the boxes from the big manufacturers of art supplies clearly states that it is 'under museum conditions'. :)

Probably FC; although my CD wear down quicker(due to softness I think)I find FC lays down just a smoothly, I do like the oil based element of FC too. The two points I favor CD are, are the lighter colours(esp white) tends to be more opaque and secondly the colour options themselves, I prefer muted more natural colours over the big bold ones. I have far more FC than CD partially b/c of the big cost difference but both are obviously great coloured pencils.

Use what you have and enjoy yourself! I have moved up after a few years to professional supplies and it certainly is a great help and makes it easier to gain my final product. Prismacolor frustrated much so if you are thinking about them...although some people love them, I'd get something else. Polychromos by Faber Castell are beautiful pencils. I love the Luminous for portraits & general figure skin tones and yes, UV fastness is a huge bonus. Otherwise, I'll use my Polychromos the most with support from Lyra & Pablo (which as some amazing blues), color pencils. And at the end of the day, I still use (even with finished works) my Prismacolor. Keep out of direct sunlight at worst case scenario but, the sun isn't nothing Krylon can't solve (so long as you know how to spray it correctly with wax pencils).

I have love Prismas since I got my first set as a teenager, but I've got a 12 set of Polychromos coming in the mail very soon and I'm excited to try them. For artists on more of a budget, if Prismas are what you can afford and you're worried about the lightfast rating, an alternative is to use a UV-filtering sealant spray such as the one made by Krylon to seal your pieces when they're finished. It's not quite as long term of a solution than using highly lightfast pencils to begin with, but it'll help. You want to look for ones that claim to be non-yellowing archival, though. I've heard of lots of people using mod podge, but mod podge is basically watered down glue. It will absolutely discolour, and it can even get tacky again and shift if it gets damp.

Confession: I don't care about lightfast because I am not a professional artist, but I LOVE Luminance for every other reason: highly saturated, feels perfect in the hand (balanced), keeps a sharp point , layers and blends well, portrait colors are amazing, they are beautiful (the wood, oh my giddy aunt the wood!), fat core that lasts 2 to 3 times longer than Prisma, and puts down more than Poly Chromos in a single layer without killing your hand so less work, performs nearly perfect middle ground between a wax and an oil and I could go on. @@Shvetsario well good for you, but the poster was describing their experience. If you suffer from joint pain, aches, and arthritis etc, then a colored pencil that is creamy, requires less work (therefore no hand, wrist, arm, or shoulder strain) to lay down color, produce beautiful lines and blends, is crucial to continuing using colored pencils.

Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to decide if I should buy a set of luminance. I just started doing dog portraits for friends and use polychromos. My problem is trying to get a white luminance pencil. So far all I can do is Amazon for $15 shipping and tax to Canada. Frustrating! Your video was helpful.

Thanks Anthony, that is a great suggestion. I did invest in a set and some extra white pencils and guess where... The UK! The price was great and for some reason free shipping, no tarif fees or Canadian taxes. I really appreciate your input. Not only has my art improved with this awesome KZbin art community but people are so helpful with recommendations for supplies. Cheers.

I've never tried luminance, but I have both prismacolor and polychromos. I mainly use prismacolor, and I think they work really well except for the fact that they ALWAYS break. It's really frustrating. I don't sell my art and I don't have any old enough art so lightfastness isn't really a problem. For the polychromos, I think they're really good for details, because you can sharpen them to a very fine point and they're really hard(opposite of prismacolor) but I find them kind of hard to blend, and they definitely don't blend as smoothly as prismacolor. I'll definitely start saving up to get a set of these though, or at least the white pencil! This video was very helpful, thanks💖

Even the Prismacolor pencils are a little expensive for me, so I definitely won't use those until I've had enough practice or as you said, become a professional. Thank you for the useful information on them though, like I said, I'll keep what you've said in mind when I've had more experience with colored pencils :)

Holbein pencils seem to be great quality but normally they would not be as expensive. Maybe in the price range of polychromos or between polychromos and caran d'ache. But the import and customs make it way more expensive

This is an older video so I will update you on Holbein. I was able to get my 150 set of Holbein imported to the USA from Amazon Japan for less than 250 dollars and that included shipping and duty fees. I chose NOT to buy in the USA ($400 dollars at Blick!) because I REFUSE to support stupid safety testing on pencils that have been around for decades that only cause cancer when you feed large doses to rats. (DON"T CHEW ON YOUR PENCILS PEOPLE). When you do the math that is less than 2 dollars a pencil. To compare I buy Luminance open stock for 4 to 5 dollars. Blick now has Holbein open stock as well so things have changed a lot in 2 yrs. Holbein is my second favorite pencil and performs more like a Prisma and they have an amazing lightfastness rating. No, they are not Luminance pencils but they are amazing in their own right and I feel worth every penny I spent to import them.

@r.a.silence4743
@r.a.silence4743 6 жыл бұрын
In my experience, fixatives will yellow over time, and they're more to keep the medium on the paper rather than add a protective UV coat (although some do have UV resistant properties). Using lightfast mediums help prolong the life of the artwork in terms of vibrancy and color, but if that's not a concern for you, then no worries. And, if you happen to create something that you do want to protect, you could always use a high quality UV glass over the image.
@renlish
@renlish 6 жыл бұрын
She explains why light-fastness is important. They are the least likely to fade over time whereas a lot of other pencils aren't as good. Fixatives, apart from causing yellowing over time for some and not much UV protection from most, can also change the colour of your pigments. Better to just get pencils that have good lightfastness. If you are a professional artist selling pencil work to go up on walls, then you''d want to use materials that give archival quality results. If you're just a hobby colourist, it's not nearly as important.
@emiliesfineartstudio304
@emiliesfineartstudio304 6 жыл бұрын
They will yellow over time. Plus, Prismacolor will always result in wax bloom, no matter what. Fixative might prevent it somewhat, but you will never be able to preserve the colour you have when initially laying it down on paper. That is the main reason I stopped using Prismas.

The Luminance 6901 are the most well made pencils ever. (I bought two sets: Excellence of investment). Half of the line is true subdued colors that make this line so excellent (as opposed to those who go for the aniline dye based super bright colors that fade before one finishes the art). The Caran d'Ache white is the best of the best whites. It's better for blending than any colored pencil blender. And the Ti buff is the most excellent buff warm tint ever, not to yellow as in others labeled "ivory". And for excellence in graphite pencils: Caran d'Ache "GRAFWOOD" line, the best Swiss made pencil. Looking for deep dark coverage in a graphite pencil: GRAFWOOD 9B! Thanks for this exposition.

Awesome points made here, I've been a professional artist forever but rarely sell my work as I get too attached to my pieces, caran dache make sense as I've noticed my work fade over the years and they lose that depth intensity you get when your arts new, however I won't mind a slight fade just to bring that price down, prismacolour is still very vibrant over regular run of the mill pencils, yeahh they're waxy and you'll get a little fade but they are dirt cheap! for good vibrancy and blend ability, I may do caran dache down the line though as they are a joy to use!

Yes, the Luminance are my go-to pencil. I use the polys and pablos in conjunction with them. Everything you say about them is absolutely true. The ONLY complaint I have is the color number and name. It literally disappears from the end of the pencil! Even ones I haven't used much show that important information almost gone. I don't hold the pencil on that end so I don't know why it disappears. I don't make/use color swatches so when it comes time to replace used pencils, I'll have to guess. I tried making little labels but they wouldn't stick. Guess I'll try an extra fine sharpie. I've only been back to CP for a little over a year, so it's not an issue yet.

I'm working on a portrait right now and it bothers me that I can't pull up my pigments and reblend because it feels like there's a waxy barrier preventing me from doing so. I'm still getting some good results and I'm quite proud of what I'm doing, but I'm starting to run into the wax bloom problem that some people are talking about...
