AMEN on vacuum sealing. Been doing it for years and it really does extend the shelf life of frozen foods considerably!!!
@KitchenTipsOnline3 жыл бұрын
There's no question that vacuum sealing food extends the freezer life. You probably noticed in the video the chicken breast and pork chops I removed from my freezer for the video that had been in there for 14 or 15 months. Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧔

Another good way to vacuum seal while waiting for it to be delivered, is to use water. First grab a big bowl and fill it with water. Next put your meat into a ziploc and slowly submerge the ziploc until the water is almost at the top where you seal it. Finally seal it while the bottom is submerged and it’ll be a nearly perfect vacuum seal.

Homemade vacuum sealer: If you place your food in a ziplock bag, stick a straw about an inch into the bag. Zip the bag until it hits the straw. Suck out the rest of the air and at the same time, quickly yank out the straw while zipping up the remaining part of the bag.

I do that flattening out thing, also, when it fits my need. However, when the item you want to protect is irregular in shape, that does not work. My mother showed me this when I was a young girl helping her in the kitchen. She told me to fill the sink with water to about 2 inches below the top of the sink. She didn't know anything about vacuum sealers in the late 1950s. But, in the 1960s, she would buy the plastic food bags. She would put the freezable item in the bag and hand it to me. I would hold it by the top and submerse it nearly to the top of the bag. The pressure of the water outside of the bag would force the air out and then I would seal the bag. I still do this today although I have a great vacuum sealer. It is much cheaper and works very well for short term freezing (a few weeks at most). If I freeze something like wedding cake for an anniversary, I use the vacuum sealer and its much better bags. I have sometimes put that bag in a second bag which I filled with water and sealed.

Another way to eliminate air in the bag is to submerge it in a pot of water to just below the seal. The water pressure will force out the air. Then seal the bag closed being careful not to let in any water.

@@KitchenTipsOnline hi Mike, yes I have read that it is possible. But I don't like the short extension you get doing it. They are saying 1 mo/45 days max. Doesn't seem worth it.🤔 I wonder if drying them to powder might be more efficient? Hopefully the collective brain here has an alternative 😉

If I added water to the bag before vac sealing and freezing, wouldn't that prevent dehydration and allow more time before freezer burn?

I don't think Ryan. And that's because water on the outside is not going to prevent the moisture from the inside from migrating to the surface of the chicken. Mike 🧔

So Reynolds Freezer Paper would be no good, even with all the air sucked out of a zip lock bag?
@KitchenTipsOnline3 жыл бұрын
If you can manage to get 100% of the air out of a Ziploc bag, you won't need freezer paper and it will work almost as well as a vacuum sealer, Mike 🧔
@0584673 жыл бұрын
@@KitchenTipsOnline I get close to 100% of air out of the ziplock bag in the beginning, at least I think I do seeing as I suck out the air with a straw. But over time, it loses that vacuum effect, which is why I use freezer paper. But after watching your video, I think it's time to invest in a vacuum sealer. But before I do, I wanted to know your opinion, and I enjoy your channel! Thanks for the reply Mike!
