THIS is the album that they should've started the 1980s with. This was the heaviest album that they have EVER done! It's true metal, from start to finish. Even the ballad "I still love you" is dark and super-heavy for a ballad. This is the album where they quit playing around with stupid, soft, and sappy stuff, really got down to brass tacks, and reinvented themselves! Too bad it didn't last. Although they had a string of Platinum Albums from 1983s Lick it up, to 1989s Hot in the Shade, those albums were what Gene Simmons called "Fluff Metal". This album, though, was anything BUT Fluff Metal. This was Real Metal, and it stands as one of their top albums of any album that they ever did, in terms of Heaviness.

@@darrengrech4098 As heavy as Creatures of the Night? They may have gained ground by doing Lick it up, what with Platinum sales, but when they took off the makeup & costumes that, up to a specific point, had made them Kiss, the true mystique of the band evaporated! True, the music on Lick it up was still Hard Rock...so to speak, and I already know what happened in the period from 1979-1981, when they released two poppish-sounding albums (Dynasty and Unmasked), then the (at that time) almost absolutely ridiculous album known as Music From The Elder (Late 1981). Still, in my opinion, Creatures of the Night (1982) was a DEFINITE return to form for a band that had already said goodbye to Peter Criss in 1980, & were in the midst of saying goodbye to Ace Frehley. In a way, Kiss just wasn't truly Kiss anymore...they were just another band making music, although most of the albums that Kiss made from 1983-1993 went either Gold or Platinum. You have to understand... I'm a purist. When Kiss started losing members, and replacing them with whoever they could get to play for them, it just wasn't the same. Even Gene Simmons did work for Hollywood in the mid to late 1980s, with roles in such movies as Runaway (1984), Trick Or Treat (1986), and Steel Dawn (1988 or 1989). Paul Stanley was left to take care of whatever personnel that was in the band at that point. Then-It happened! In 1996, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, Gene Simmons, & Paul Stanley re-united, put the makeup and costumes back on, and began making music (magic) all over again! Anyway-Say what you want to say about Lick it up. It definitely has it's merits. But-I've got to reiterate-Before they took the makeup and costumes off back in 1983, Creatures of the Night was far heavier than Lick it up...in my opinion. Disagree all you want. That's your right. I'll stick with Creatures of the Night as my choice, and, with all respect to you, I'll never compromise!

Whenever somebody who's getting into Kiss asks me what albums to buy, I always tell them that they should start with the holy trilogy of their albums. Albums which were made when the band had to prove something and where they stepped up and delivered with a vengeance. So which of their albums are their "Holy Trilogy?" Album 1. "Destroyer" - After Kiss finally gained momentum with "Alive" people were going "Well then what's your next move?" So they hooked up with Bob Ezrin and produced a KILLER rock album with sing along anthems ("Detroit rock City"), a nice mellow out ballad ("Beth") and a big GENE song ("God of thunder" although Paul actually wrote it) and in doing so nailing the classic formula that makes a great album. Album 2. "Creatures of the night" - After a few albums which showed Kiss were losing their way and with People asking Paul Stanley what it was like to be on a sinking ship in interviews, the band knew it was time to get back to doing what they KNEW they were capable of. And with Eric Carr's powerhouse drumming providing a new aspect to their music went to work. "Creatures" was very much "Destroyer part 2" with sing along anthems ( "I love it loud"), a nice mellow out Ballad ("I still love you") and a devastating GENE song. ("Warmachine") With "Creatures" Kiss were back and hitting harder than ever before. Album 3. "Revenge" - To say that Kiss again lost focus during the remainder of the eighties would be an understatement, they had deteriorated into just another hair metal band and the albums were pretty much Paul Stanley solo albums as Gene by his own admission "wasn't there during the eighties" The death of Eric Carr also didn't improve things. But being bolstered by the fact that more and more contemporary bands sang their praises, the band decided to show that they still had what it takes went into the studio with Bob Ezrin and again using the formula of Sing along anthems ("Take it off") a nice mellow our Ballad ( "Every time I look at you.") and an absolute beast of a GENE song ( "Unholy") had their third part of the trilogy.

I’ve always thought the sound of the band from here until Revenge is better than the original lineups sound. Obviously the original lineup is what got everyone’s attention, and the sound along with the look is what got over, which is why we like them! All I’m saying is the sound is better from like 82-92.

Didn't realize that they had changed the cover and removed Ace's face and put in Vinnie's. So which one would be the collectors item ?.... Hmmm.

They didn't. That's a bootleg cover. They never released a COTN cover with Vinnie on it.

Actually there's 3 versions. One with Ace, one with Vinnie and one with Bruce without make-up. As far as collectibility, I guess I'd agree with Maddie Rippy!
