After attempting to contact the website creator, I was only able to do a whois to discover that the website is set to expire on 2023-03-27. So unless a new website is put up, or that one is renewed (I tried e-mailing the support e-mail but it is no longer working) the software will be available on their website until March 2023.

Eddie, thank you for the information on micro-cap. 5 years ago, I was on an EMI tiger team and we were troubleshooting a RE 102 EMI outage. We found out that our company had dropped Pspice. When we looked into getting Pspice back the company refused any software that was not stand alone. We approached them and the 4,000 dollar price tag for micro-cap sent them over the edge. I need to verify my model library that I have with LTSPICE will work. This should not be a problem as long as micro-cap follows the Berkeley subcircuit definition.
@KissAnalog2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this feedback! Let me know if there are any problems. MicroCap does use Berkeley Spice as its backbone (unlike LTSpice which has its own math model that will import SPICE models). Microcap has several ways to bring in models - and I show some of that in other videos in my playlist:) Here's a link to one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWanp5l6Yrd0gJI Micro-Cap is very powerful and has a huge library already and a big library of circuits as well.

I thank you for this info. I just took a quick look at it and the library of models is inpressive! Lots of transistor and tube models. You did a lot of product reviews lately and as you said you are looking for inspiration for further videos. I say make the name of your chanel come true and tell us something about analog circuite design. Like on the base of amplifier design, everything is some kind of an amplifier. How do different concepts of CCSs compare, simple JFET or the "ring of two" or cascoded BJT. Also current mirrors in a differential stage and their application could be very interesting. As I understood you are a pro at SMPS. You could make a video about designing them, especially the traps. Like the peak and mean switching current trought the choke or the switching transistor (buck or boost). A design "go trought" would be very interesting (choosing of the switching frequency, chosing of the appropriate choke and so on). Keep up the good work!

@@KissAnalog I was using Micro Cap 3&4. A good test of a simulator is how well it handles a PLL with a digital phase detector. There are a number approaches that simulators take. Performing the circuit analysis in the time or frequency domain and then converting between the two. Some do a pure mathmatical analysis in the Laplace domain. Each have advantages and drawbacks, but I have found a good test is if they can they simulate a cd4046 pll type 2 phase/frequency detector. This is usually best handled by those that increment voltage and current in the time domain. When simulating such a detector implemented in a FPGA, I have used MathCad, but MatLab does it best. MicroCap was really good at analogue filter design. I spent some time using it to design flat group delay analogue filters for old analogue modem data transmission.

Here in January 2021. I discovered myself that Microcap became free only last summer in 2020. My history with Microcap goes back to the early 1990's using Version 3 when I was studying EET, then about a decade later I dinked around with Version 6. Anyway, it's the end of an era. I hope to try Version 12. I still have Version 3 as well as the book/manual.

@@KissAnalog ... It's been awhile since I've used Cap but I hope to get back into it. It brings me back to the 1990's. This situation of Cap becoming free at the end of its life reminds me of another favorite software of mine that had the same thing happen to it. It was a 3D CAD modeling & animation software called TrueSpace 3D, that would sell for hundred$ each version & then finally the company got bought out by Microsoft & so the last version became free, which this happened over 10 years ago. Must've been frustrating to those who paid for the latest software version for $600 & finding they could have just waited. Bittersweet story as well.

Can you please let me know if i am doing something wrong and how to fix it.? Thanks in advance.

That's great that you got this. Did you get the CD version which has the manual and whole package? It sounds like all the files did not unzip in the mc12 folder. Try downloading the CD version then run the setup.exe. You may need to unzip the file into the mc12 folder. After installing, go to the help menu and get the latest updates. @KissAnalog2 ай бұрын
That's a great idea. I have tried to reach out, and maybe I'll try again. The thing is, Microcap is so mature and so far ahead of most other programs - there's not much more to do with it. Also, you can build parts and import so there is lots of room to grow.

I am now retired and want to "close-out" by getting back into discrete RF circuit design (my life and work took me other places!) so this looks the most promising for "my-budget!" Just seeing this, I was wondering if it has dual-gate MOSFETs and RF toroidal inductors? Or, if you can edit or download a new component for the future to keep this software viable? Also, hats-off to Spectrum-Soft for doing what they did--as you said they could have capitalized much more than they did! Anyway, great video and I DO look forward to going through your tutorials. @@KissAnalog After playing a bit there are some minor issues when using it on Wine. The file save/open dialog is broken. You can't save any circuits. It says it is saved, but it isn't. Similarly, open dialog shows previous and can be used to open demo circuits, but you can't close the window and continue. Switching in winecfg to Windows XP compatibility, instead of default Windows 10, change the way file dialog works, and fixes it. This way you can save circuits and make it work. I did seen some report of crashes during use of Text mode, to add/ edit models by hand in SPICE language, but I can't reproduce it yet. Overall, the library of components and ability to add new models, with a lot of parameters easily, is very impressive. But other than that the UI and user experience is quite a bit of mess. I will continue using it, but I don't like how it is designed overall.

@@KissAnalog Sorry Eddie, I have been meaning to get back to this. I recently put a new computer together, I kept my last one limping along for 12 years. I'm running Manjaro at the moment, but when I gather the time and patience to install everything I will be going back to arch. Linux itself is a steep learning curve, but very satisfying when you get it right. I did do a bit of homework, on the back of others who went before me, and all though I haven't proved it myself yet, Micro-cap, can allegedly be run, and run well on linux. I found the instructions with a google search. There are many free spice type programs free and available for linux. I think it's a kind of sickness on my part though, I tend to (when patience on the day allows) try to find workarounds for things that shouldn't work lol. I have had mixed success, but seeing others do it is somewhat of a motivator I think. I will get back to this, just life is slightly hectic at the moment, but I like learning (things I'm interested in), and eager to relearn what I have forgotten over time, strange as that sounds. Best wishes. Dan.
