There is a Chanel "Young Barnacles" he is an Americas Cup rigger and has some very good systems for performance cat rigging that you may like to consider for your own cat. He can drop and raise sails in strong down wind conditions and his young children seem to be capable of sailing the boat. Perhaps worth a view. Love your project.

These videos are quasi-perfect!!! So much respect for the details you are showing on the choices you are making and reasoning behind them. Please don't worry about some of the aspect.s of the build you might consider "boring". (Sanding, filling, etc.) The content is fabulous!!! The elements & details you are covering are all whats involved in building a boat (the right, & best way.) Router jig- I'm betting that Schionning will recommend using your adapter for other clients who construct their boats. Have you considered creating a V2 version which has some sort of measurement system to set cut depth & bit clearance? Perhaps having a small slot somewhere where measurement 'tic marks' and material viewing could be incorporated into your design? Would that be something valuable to have? Especially for other Schionning clients performing the same type construction techniques, but using different thickness of materials based on the size & type of boat being built? I know it's a relatively small market for your jig, but who knows there must be people who need a 'Jig" just like yours. Thanks for all the great content!

Thanks for the kind comments. And yes that jig is for a very small market :), but we will see about that improvement in the Mark 3 version. :)

They make straight router bits with a top bearing that could be useful for back cutting the foam from between the fiberglass.

We have lots of those. They don't work for this application.

I have had to remove foam core like that. I made a arbor for a 1/2 router and used 4 biscuit cutter blades on it, I Used some shims between each one. Used a small board for fence on the router base. Any areas I needed to clean up I used a flat wire wheel on a angle grinder. Worked pretty well and better than the other guys doing it with a heated wire tool.
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
That sounds like an interesting method. Fortunately, our new 3D printed jig is working well, though we had to make a modification, which you will see next week :)

For the small holes and gaps between the strips I like to use an epoxy syringe. The first time I tried it, I was concerned that I would be able to make the epoxy thick enough to not sag but still thin enough to go through the syringe. I was pleasantly surprised that even pretty stiff epoxy would go through without problem. The benifit is that it allows you to apply the epoxy to the bottom of the crack and avoid trapping air.

Yes, we have one and do use that a times :)

Phil, use a top-bearing bit that will ride inside the laminate. The router will be perpendicular to the board. You’ll need to bang together a right angle fence. The inside edge of the laminate is your guide…Easy peesey!!

If I can give you a tip, don’t use acetone when working with epoxy . Acetone eats epoxy and can leave a residue that can effect the bonding qualities of epoxy. It is best just to thoroughly vacuum, using a brush head, and if you wanna wipe stuff down, use denatured alcohol, methylated spirits, it is a much safer method that won’t contaminate the laminates. Cheers Rustie. PS The only thing I use acetone on is to soak consolidating rollers and bristle rollers, and after soaking I rinse in metho.

Nice safe with the 3d printed part. I would have just clamped on two wooden guides, one for the top and one for the bottom. And then used a router bit with a guide bearing. Really quick and easy. The printed part is a bit more flexible though.

@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Hopefully, it will get more exciting in a couple months. We are slogging through the most difficult part of the build right now, the two canoes and forebeam. Once that strip planking is done. the boat will take shape much faster, and once it starts looking like a boat, well, that will be exciting (at least for us workers).

3:43 BIS or Beaver Industrial Supply Catalog number: ↓↓↓ 57166, AMANA TOOL BOWL CUT OUT BIT 1/2 SHANK You want to look for a "slot cutter" not a "rabbet bit" . They are by design limited in their variety. Also, a simple 90° jig with a set of holes that match the pattern of a plunge router base is a simple and effective solution for plunge cutting as opposed to slot cutting. Love seeing the project come along with each new video! Just as Arabella launches, Lynx takes shape!! -✌️

@@SailingSVLynx indeed it's hard to think one is giving usable intel to a channel that produces videos on time delay HAHA. If it were live stream it would make more sense to make suggestions. But I cannot help myself 😉. Designing custom jigs for one-off pieces of fine furniture was my existence for 30 years. It seeps into the nooks and crannies of our DNA and longs for expression. I do the same thing with Arctic Sea Camel. He is struggling a bit with feed speed on his cnc. Mowing through expensive carbide cutters at and alarming rate.

Square top mains are the devil's tool! I considered an Istec, but went with a large assym because it was 1/4 the price, I feel it will give me a knot extra over a parasail, and I have nothing better to do than trim every once in a while. Did you consider a Code D? They might fit with your self tacker for going upwind.
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's why we said we went with an expensive sail :) Asymetrics are definitly less. But we like the versatility of this sail and we splurged on two sails, the Parasailor and the screecher, which is made from a more expenisve material than our two jibs or mainsail.

We lift the finished boat onto a flatbed truck with a crane, which then drives down a 3 lane highway to the freeway, then on to Newport Beach where the crane picks it back up and lowers the boat onto the ocean. It's about 30 miles.

Neat tool fence for the router, (if you want to go a little more radical and use the riuter perpendicular to the surface I think you can source stacked dado type blades for a router spindle as an option if this doesnt work). In my experience the best way to control vertical alignment is to make a larger fence (or baseplate) ...... extend the right angle fence to over 6" so that it slides over the face of the panels, this will control your reference angle (and could even mount a second handle on it), you wil be able to maintain parallel alignment with the panels and have much more control on engaging the tool to the cut.
