She's an old ship - at least a couple of centuries. Seen many fights. Her glory days may be behind her, but she's still doing her part. Too old to refit; to useful to decommission.

T5-48 Battleship, also known as The Pride, was present at the Battle of Aycor, Prime-52, and Zycor until it was placed at the prime sector station to defend it. It can hold 23 Tasiyo Heavy Interceptors and 5 rare galactic union star bomber’s. It has a pretty weak armament for its size of only 52 heavy plasma cannons but makes up for it with its strong hull and shielding along with its starfighter carrying capacity. It’s construction began in 2258 and was finished in 2265 but only one other T5-48 was produced after they noticed a blatant and obvious flaw in its hanger system that if misused would tear the ship in half. The ship was finally destroyed defending the prime sector station from destruction and was ultimately the one ship that saved the station. I think I overdid it a bit. oops.

Awesome...... as a child in the 70s I remember on a kids shows in the UK on Saturday mornings watching them make a spaceship out of plastic containers you would normally throw in the trash... I’ve always wanted to do the same. I’m 50 this year and I’m going to definitely do one over the winter months.... thanks for the tips and now it’s time to start finding the pieces 👍🏼

I can tell you from experience that all artists find inspiration from others, even if it isn't the same medium. I'm a writer and I have found tons of inspiration from just watching the creation of these starships and vehicles. I am a huge sci-fi geek and seeing these creations gets my mind to spinning. I don't think I've seen anyone more enthused about their art than this rad dude. Keep up the fantastic work and I'd love to see them in a short film of some kind. How awesome!!!!

Use a used tooth brush with a 'wet' paint. Run your thumb along the tooth brush to cause it to flick tiny dots of paint onto your ship. It will help to break up the flat areas, and add texture. A not too contrasty 'dirty' colour works best, but be super subtle with it. ILM do it all the time. Practice on paper first to dial in your technique. Also when your aztecing is a bit 'bold', a thin, light coat of the base color will tone it down, and help blend it. If you light the model with a ton of light, as if you were shooting on 35mm film, and trying to get a big depth of field, most of the weathering will go away. Your ship looks great!

After you do the aztec patern, demask, then take an airbrush with the top color and thinned way down and with light pressure just mist over the whole piece to blend the top and bottom a bit. don't spray heavy you just want to slightly lighten the bottom color to blend it slightly.

We found it entombed under a mountain of limestone, in the same place where it was supposedly shot down centuries prior. A dead war-god from a bygone era. Our salvation. The mainframe flickered on, and its ancient voice boomed through the corridors. *"Is it time again?"* it questioned. *"I haven't seen people in so long. Not since my crew left me here. I don't blame them, I am an old machine. But you are here now. Do the people cry for freedom? For liberation? I can still fight. I am tired but I will fight. Do my people need me again?"*

An easy way to tone down the aztec camo, is to mist on a very thin coat of the lighter color over it. Ideally this is done with an air brush and very thin paint. It can be done with a spray can, but it is much more difficult. The idea is to slowly build up the color, until it looks right to you. You did a great job on the Model construction and the paint job.

it looks pretty heavily weathered, but as films like star Wars ships look, that it will tend to be washed out by the bright camera lights, so for a film prop, it's probably about right. I'll be interested to see how it does look on film.

I like the heavy weathering. For all the time we put in these models, they are only visible for seconds. You are right about the fly-boys. They are short. And there are usually distance masks that make it even farther away. The detail has to be accentuated. Thanks for the shout-out for the local hobby stores. I worked my way through college at Hub Hobby Supplies in New Orleans. And I still help Gilbert’s Hobbies in Gettysburg with his web work. Support local brick fronts. Keep ‘em open!

Model railroaders such as myself use a lot of washes. A very effective DIY one is to use black leather dye mixed into a tall *glass* jar mixed with 90% isopropyl alcohol. Mix it all up and then let it *sit* for a day. Do not mix it back up. This is the magic. Once you let it sit, it will separate into layers. Dip your brush in and you'll get darker and darker concentrations the deeper you go. With the alcohol, it will flash dry quickly, or use a hair drier to speed it up. Adding a bit of brown dye helps warm it up. You can make a lifetime supply for around $10.

This is really awesome. I love the final result. I hadn't heard about that term "aztecing" before. I think it would be really useful for an idea I've had in mind. I love the old star wars stuff and the expanded universe(basically everything before Disney is awesome stuff), and had this thought of a ship using both traditional star wars tech and some of the Yuuzhan Vong biotech. The greebies and stuff would be great for the base, but do you have any ideas for how I could make more organic looking parts for a spacecraft? A few weapons and sensor arrays and stuff like that. I was thinking of just using some hot glue to blend some edges together, but I don't know if it will take paint as well.

The reason for the paint pattern on the spacecraft models is to make it look more real. If you look at any man made structure like a large building or a ship that pattern happens naturally because humans aren’t perfect and we can not make things with a perfectly smooth surface or texture. When painting the roof of the super dome in New Orleans over time the paint will be a shade darker or lighter because one spot is painted over a darker or lighter spot or one spot is newer paint from a repair. So to give the hull of a massive spacecraft realism the paint pattern is actually calculated, becoming an element of the design.

You make an excellent point, whether it is physical models or CG. Decide HOW it will appear and build to that. A 2 second establishing shot mid distance needs less detail, but perhaps stronger emphasis on silhouette or the paint job. A locked off close up of a ship on a landing pad will need to hold up to more scrutiny. Don't waste time and effort in a production on things that won't make the cut. Film production models have a different purpose to models that sit on your shelf.
