I am a KP and I love it. Love working with everybody I work with. Maybe my case is rare judging from the comments but I went through homelessness, hunger, the loss of my support system etc so I guess anything I face after that is light work

I'm currently working as a KP, yet I work longer hours than the head chef, I get the lowest wage and the waiting staff look down on me. I just clean, clean clean just so I can go home bang on time. But oh no! "You have to peel two sacks of potatos, strain the stock, mash the potatoes and deck scrub and mop the entire kitchen floor" It won't be forever that's the one thing that goes through my mind to keep me going.

I'm a kitchen porter and I'm really fortunate my job is really easy because we're only a very small restaurant with an average or 30-60 orders per day. The staff are very respectful to me and we all get along really well. I've heard bigger restaurants get up to 1000 orders with just 3 kp. That's 333 per porter which sounds hellish.

Been a KP 3 times in different restaurants, I'm now 17. Constantly got looked down by the chiefs, waitresses and especially the bitchy boss(Who hated me with a passion, for some reason)I had to also waiter the big ass garden and make the desserts at the same time as being a KP. I worked 11-7 with no breaks as the boss would get pissy as the plates would pile up! Frustrates me as the waiting staff got 20 minutes break as well as free food from the chiefs to eat! Just reflects how KPs are disrespected! If you're a KP at this moment in time I know how you feel brother keep fighting!

As someone who works as a KP part time. I can honestly say that it is a job not to be taken lightly, but it us better than being unemployed (especially if there are not any other jobs available). Luckily for me most of the staff that I work with are friendly (including the chefs). The only part I hate about the job is when i have to wait something to do if it is not so busy in the kitchen or if I'm sent to one of the busy kitchens (and I mean that as an understatement) and i'm the only KP working in that kitchen.
@openlyclosed6244
@openlyclosed6244 9 жыл бұрын
+Dragodylon That used to happen to me too as a KP. What I did was I altered my speed depending on how busy the kitchen was. When it's not busy, go as slow as possible without being noticed. You can run each set of dirty pans through three wash cycles in the machine. Just make sure there are always dirty pans visible. lol

I've been a kitchen porter on and off at various eateries since 2017. It's a very intense job regardless. Coming home from work, my limbs and chest can be covered in bruises or sometimes I might have a strained muscle. Needless to say, it's a great way of staying or becoming ripped. At the most recent restaurant that I was a KP in, I was treated with respect and affection by my colleagues, which was a first. The waiters and waitresses are often the most frustrating staff because they will cheerily throw dirty plates and cutlery onto your clean pile and never scrape the plates before giving them to you. Rather disgustingly, they will sometimes be eating food straight off of the plates before merrily hurling them into your clean pile. Even when you are busy pot-washing and have to do a run to the cellar but can't in a particular moment, and you ask a waitress to go to cellar to take a tray or such, she won't do it. Just, says she's too busy as she gazes at the wall with her arms folded. Evidently, waiters and waitresses are quite lazy people as other comments here have said. However, I never have and never would lose my temper with them. I've done my job as a KP well and am satisfied with that. Of course, the irony is that my long term career is as an academic and as an archaeologist.

If your good at your job you will get the respect, nobodies going to respect a KP that cant manage basic tasks, I know I'm much better than this job but im earning good money because im a valued member of the team and am payed well because of it (well above minimum wage). I started a new place and less than a week everyone knows my name and I get a break when I want and can cook my own food for free.. I have full control over the music being played too.. You need to get over the initial shock of the amount of shit you see on a regular basis and realise that everyone in the building is in a rush, chefs get stressed over orders flying at them but 100% of the time will apoligise within minutes for any shit they give, servers are great when they get to know you and introduce yourself to everyone no matter who they are, people appreciate knowing who you are because if you think your washing dishes all day then your in for a major shock lol.. Good luck guys I guess I'm lucky but get the head down and make that money or some other fecker will.. :)

There can be stressful days where you fall behind, but if you let it get to you you'll have a hard time. Most of the chefs I worked with were a KP at some point in their career and because of that they had some bit of respect for me. Really bad job.They got me cleaning dishes alone, and at the ssame time cooking rice and soup, and even serving food as well (samples) Then at the end of the night after closing, I only get 1 hour to clean all the dishes + put them back, take out the garbage, clean the entire kitchen and grill, and do all the bathrooms or else i get bitched at... My 1st week I got bitched at for not going fast enough on a friday night being the only KP in the kitchen..

I work as a KP and refuse to make any food or desserts!!! It shouldn't be your job. Your job is to wash dishes in a fast paced environment and clean the kitchen. I have no training, so I do not prepare any food, unless it's like cutting veg or something, because that has no training needed.

just finished my second day in the kitchen. At this point i don't feel my legs. The stereotypes are all true. All the chicks get fancy jobs that require minimal effort, while the guys do the washing. Another example... you get no respect by anyone. i got literally pushed out of the way by a bully chef, cause i couldn't do 3 food prep dishes in like 40 seconds on my second day. at one point i almost said fuck it and quit the job on the spot but pulled through knowing that with my shit education i wouldn't get anything better than this. On another hand, there are perks such as free food. a lot of desserts get send back in on numerous occasions lol.

Maybe that's true, guys, for some reason, tend to be KPs, but I'm female and have a part time job as a KP. I've never been able to get in retail or waitressing, so I have to do the shitty job of washing pots, which I like, I've always liked cleaning, but when you do it as a job, it's fucking awful. It's the hardest job in the damn kitchen, and my hands and body always hurt after a shift, it's PAINFUL. I hear waitresses complaining all the time about their job, if there's only, say, three waitresses on and it's a little busy.. Hmmm. There's ONE kitchen porter per shift where I work. Try my job.

Did this in the late 90s when I was a teenager. Left after two days. Truly a horrible job. Got paid £20 per night for 10 hours. It was an Indian restaurant in Sheffield. At the end of both nights my hands were yellow and swollen. One load of cutlery and pottery was quickly followed by another huge load throughout the night. The staff did not necessarily treat me like garbage though, maybe because I was new. I left it to try waitering at another Indian restaurant, that is where the staff did treat me like garbage and I left after one night only. I would not recommend a kitchen porter job to anyone. Long hours, poor pay and degrading work. You're better off delivering parcels for Hermes.

Yh Fair enough jeff, It has been very mixed to say the least in my experience, Hell even some of the stuck up waitresses were bitchy with the Kp, Its very hard work for sure but it mainly just comes down to the attitude of the people you work with. The job itself is hard work and can be stressful when very busy but that doesn't bother me too much as I just graft and have a good attitude to work.

I'm a KP myself atm and the chefs respect my job which makes the job a lot easier and less annoying to do. Once you get a hang of things, it's not too bad even though it's incredibly demanding (at least physically) but we should be better paid considering how important we are and how much and how hard we have to work EVERY single day.

This jobs depends on what company you work for, personally I wouldn’t work as a kp for a shit company with shit staff, go work for a posh kitchen and you’ll have the best time of ur life. And most of the time kitchen places will always offer you other positions to train on if you prove them ur a committed person. Most of the people that slate this job and say they wouldn’t do this that blah blah blah are the sort of people that will be working for another man for the rest of their life’s :)

wokring as a KP, hmm. At first it was an absolute shit hole - despite most of the staff including the chefs treating me very well as most of the chefs in the kitchen went through being KP themselves so they understand. Look, its a tough and shitty job, but you have to understand something, without you the whole kitchen can and will fall on its knees - they will not tell you this. Know your own value as a KP, you literally are the foundation of the kitchen - what will the food be served on? Customers' hands? lol. I'm being promoted to a chef position so im still in between both KP and being chef so just look forward, it is not going to last forever. Be assertive, when you know you are ready to move up, tell the fucking head chef you want to move up! cheers.

@Jimbob1337

Openly Closed Foday Kalon I have worked as a KP for over a year now, and the level of respect you get is entirely down to the individual staff members. If FOH is akin to the skin of the body, the kitchen is the internal organs, the guts so to speak. And while the chefs are the heart of the kitchen, the KP is the muscle. Without a good KP. the kitchen falls flat. Believe me when I say the staff realize this when I'm on holiday and they have to cover me - it is a tough job.

I work as a kp and i've started to earn the chef's respect, I do a lot of cooking at home and my knife skills are fairly good so I help them out with a lot of prep, they've even put a couple of my ideas on the menu, the best way to earn their respect is working hard, never holding them up, giving them some shit back and kinda forcing your way into kitchen stuff and showing them you know some things about food
