We are doing a budget kitchen renovation in this video. My son's kitchen in his manufactured home was a disaster, the previous owner fancied himself as a contractor. His work was sub-par, and messy. Nothing was level, plumb or straight. It was in serious need of a renovation. My son and his wife are on a tight budget, so we have to be creative!
The cabinets were a mess, they were all mismatched and poorly installed. Our first challenge was to remove all the doors and paint the boxes. We then went to the local builder's salvage yard and found replacements doors. most were in the $5 range. We also found and over range microwave cabinet that was the correct size for only $15! in the end we only had to purchase one new cabinet. All of the doors were stripped sanded and painted.
The next task was closing off the awkward pass though between the kitchen and laundry room, this opening was only 23" wide, it had to go. Also, there was an odd wing wall that had been build so that you could not see the refrigerator from the living room, the refrigerator was moved to its current location a couple of months ago, so this wing wall had to go as well. While we were at it, some electrical had to be rerouted, so we installed five new recessed lights and moved another fixture to give the room a MUCH needed lighting upgrade. This was the end of Day 1.
Day 2; After demo, we framed out the opening and added drywall. Drywall is not my favorite task but we pushed through, got everything patched, taped, sanded and textured, including removing the peel and stick backsplash. The installed a ledger board in preparation for hanging all of the upper cabinets. This is where we really could see how badly the ceiling was sloped. The ledger board really helped. All of the cabinets were installed, secured to the wall and each other, and the doors installed. Day 2 was over and so was my weekend.
The following Friday was day three. the remainder of the lower doors were installed, the door hardware, and the microwave cabinet was replaced, along with the adjoining cabinet. I had to scribe a piece of molding to the tops of the cabinets to hide the gap, then everything was painted to match the cabinets. The we set out to pain the wall a medium gray from Sherwin-Williams. Two coats, and it looks amazing. After cleanup we ended Day 3.
There is more work to do, including hanging a couple more cabinets in the dining room, a door for the peninsula bar, and I mis-measured the replacement doors for the under sink cabinet, we did not find smaller ones at the salvage, so the ones we found previously are going to have to be cut down, but that's for another video!
