I was reading that in Maui, kiteboarders are asked to not return all the way to shore, but do their turns offshore and farther out since the shore gets too congested. Seems like this would be a good practice at our site, where everyone is launching, lessons are being taught, and everyone seems to return to shore to do their jumps where everyone can see them. Usually the better jumpers are experienced enough to not do their jumps at the launch site though. As I get more experience, I'm spending more time away from the shore, which gets congested.

Hi James, yes that is very a good example of specific rules on different spots. It is true that many kiters like to show their moves too close to the beach, but also many of them are jumping closer in case anything happens…broken equipment or mostly injury this way they can easily and faster access the beach and get helped. I do not recommend practicing jumps or new moves too far out from the beach, but always to keep a safe distance from the beach and other sea users.

Very good coverage of Kiteboarding rules of the road. Too bad SO MANY kiters do not know them or simply ignore them. I also treat every kiter as if they a total beginner. Stay clear!!!

Hey, thank you. Yes, it is true that many kiters do not know the right of way rules because of instructor not explaining them the rules, or they simply forgot. Yes, definitely the best you can do, to always analyse the kiters you are kiting next to, good job 🙌

From my experience the rule where the kiter getting in the water has preference is too many times ignored by kiters already in the water. It would be good for all to keep in mind it is very important.

Yes, it's true.. unfortunately all this kitesurfing rules are not clear to every kitesurfer as there is not a specific platform where you can find 100% correct and clear kitesurfing rules, most of the time big kitesurfing organisations say just Common Sense, which I cannot agree with as every person has a slightly bit different common sense, so in the end again we have a mess on the water or beach. I'm working on it that kitesurfing rules becomes more clear to everyone and we all perfectly know how to react in certain situations. bdw, in this episode I did I'm still not 100% happy with all the rules I mentioned, I would like to slightly change some of them, hopefully I will show my idea in the near future.

Great movie, although with a right hand rule, it's more about the right to stay on course, which not always mean more upwind. Also I was missing lack of right of way if rider is going downwind.
@kitesurfexperiencebypetar
@kitesurfexperiencebypetar 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, you are right "right hand right of way" not always means up wind, I like to keep things simple, as I was struggling to explain the exact rule in a simple way, can you please share with us in a simple sentence the explanation of “right hand right of way"? For a kiter running downwind the rule of "Slower kiter has priority" applies, Im sorry for not mentioning it.
@pileqrai

@@kitesurfexperiencebypetar I got your point with this simplification to avoid "overthinking" by kiters. And that's really good. But some kiters try to prove their right of the way at all cost. Kitesurfing rules come from sailing. During my sailing license I was told that, 'if two yachts are supposed to cross their way, going from opposite directions (according to wind) , starboard (right) tack has the right to stay on its course and portboard (left) has to give it's way' - making it even more simple - having wind on the right hand side you should keep your course over someone coming from opposite direction. I think that's the simplest sentence I can go ;) It also applies if both kitesurfers/yachts are going downwind from opposing directions. I was also told that, if you're privileged, but you change your course and cause an accident, it will be on you, as the other yacht could give you the right of the way correctly. In kitesurfing I think we should be more aware and forgiving. I see a lot of people trying to go more upwind as they approach you , being on starboard, at the end they usually stall, their kite falls and you are forced to turn around. Not cool and surfy at all ;) Not mentioning riders who don't know when and how lower/rise their kites during passing. After a while of thinking the golden rule might be: Be aware of other's skills, don't test their knowledge, be cool and enjoy ;) It's always easier to turn around, than look for kite repair shop ;) Sorry for long answer ;)

@@pileqrai Exactly all the rules come from sailing, but in kitesurfing there are lines (of 20 meters most of the the time) we should take into consideration. What would mean for a kitesurfer to keep his cours ? To keep the course with the board and the kite super stable in one point, if the kiter moves his kite 20 degrees lower/higher just before crossing another kiter did he loose his right of way ? So the left hand rider must look carefully and think where the right hand rider is heading to avoid him going down wind, up wind or change his course ? I still believe that all the situations possible are too complicated to explain to a new kitesurfer. (Kiters will have difficulties proving that the other kiter changed his course). There are no rules in sailing which can apply just for kitesurfing, “with keeping the kite lower you are signaling that you want to go down wind and with keeping the kite higher that you want to go up wind”. This is how kitesurfers know how to cross each other. It is a super important rule and I'm not sure anyone who explained right of way rules in kitesurfing, ever mentioned this one ? This rule is more important than right hand right of way (starboard priority). So now if you are riding to the right keep in mind that if you want to go upwind you should keep your kite higher and you have the right to go up wind. As I mentioned in the end of the episode (I don’t like to call it “Rule” because this doesn’t apply if any damage is caused), to have smooth session “most important is to analyse the kiters you are kiting next to… you want to avoid collision at all cost”. Thank you for your contribution, Petar

I was searching for comprehensive and clear instructions on this topic for a couple of days. This is hands down the best video I saw thus far. Great job Petar! Regarding the educating the careless folks: it might be good idea to create a merch, like a t-shirt or so, that promote the idea of safety and depict at least the most crucial principles of the right of way. Maybe even set of the t-shirts with a big picture and a rule in a large font for one t-shirt. If there is a group of dedicated kiters (crew members) who care, they can wear shirts with different pictures/rules to rise awareness. Would be even better if the manufacturers will print this rules with well designed schemes on their kite backpacks, so no one could say that they are not aware of this. I guess, IKO may facilitate adoption of this idea.

Hello Sergei, I'm glad to hear that you like my video and explanation :) Your idea about the shirts doesn't sound bad, my only problem is that I still didn't figure it out what is the best method of shipping the t-shirts world wide and that the shipping cost is not to high, any recommendation?

At my local beach most of us ride waves. But sadly many of the out of towners that make their way down here ride TT and have no idea on the wave right of way rule. They refuse to move off their tack which mean the wave rider generally ends up crashing. Then we get the ones that think the beach is their play ground to jump and ride between all the beach swimmers. They are the ones that will screw it up for the locals. The local are lucky though. There about 10 of us. On a busy day we have 5 people out… until the out of towners arrive. Thankfully rarely. My goal is to to ensure they respect not just the local kiters but also the local beach goers.

Yes, definitely on many spots around the world kiters don't know right of way rules, and they don't want to talk to locals to get to know if there is any specific rule. For one spot in Greece I wanted to do a board on which would be indicated what is going on on the spot and put a QR code of the video with Right of way rules, so everybody can be reminded them self about the rules.(I didn't do it because I'm not working on this spot anymore) I believe this would be a good idea for many of the kitesurfing spots around the world.

Reminder for wave riders: You have right of way when riding the wave, but before you turn onto a wave, you need to check there's no one right behind you!
