If you put the power on the inner tube instead of inside the tire, it goes together a lot faster!

Hey Mark. Another nicely done video. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these. I am learning quite a lot. You are always very clear and concise with your directions. You are giving me confidence before I embark on my build.

You should consider beefing up the tail spring pad at the bottom of the Vertical stab and adding gussets. Easier to do it now than after it breaks and you are welding with fabric on the plane.

If you think that greaser is messy --- try packing the old way --- in your hand!!!. I like that idea of using the wood block to spread the beads on the tire. Have to try that next time.

Enjoy your videos. What are those pins for that you hammered into the gear. Is it something to do with the internal brake line? I checked grove installation diagram/instructions, but it doesn't explain why you but them in? I am considering grove gear for my kitfox 4. MANY thanks, Martin from IRELAND.
@KitplaneEnthusiast4 жыл бұрын
Those pins are just positioning pins for the gear. The Kitfox construction manual is very good and explains the pins.

Hi Mark, was watching this week’s video and saw you were struggling with the bearing packing tool. While those are effective they are very messy!! I am both a aviation nut and Snap On tool dealer and I use the Lisle Handy Packer (pn 34550). I purchased this for my all around bearing packing needs and the RV10 build if or when I get to that stage... ;o) btw I really like the videos and the work you are doing.

stop the video at 16:16 you will see the rollers in the bearing are dry,grease should be squirting out between the rollers and the roller cage not the inside or the inner race.I have never used such a device but I would wager a bet the bearing should have been placed the other way around.Please keep an eye on that wheel sure hate to see you have a problem

Mark, thank you for all the uploads. Your videos are truly great, as are Jason Ellis' with his RV-10, when it comes to the process of putting one of these projects together. Since you've built a few aircraft and have 2 active projects, you are best equipped to answer which kit you believe to be the easiest to assemble. I understand that they'd be varying levels of difficulty - as the Zenith's are aluminum/fiberglass while the Kitfox is fabric covering, etc. But - based on your experiences building EAB airplanes, which kit would you recommend to a first time builder? The posted build-times available on all the sites vary from one extreme to another. Regardless, it seems as though you enjoy the build process very much, no matter which one you'd be up against, but to the rest of us - it's a pretty scary prospect of getting in something that we duct taped together. I'd be scared beyond belief doing engine work in any kit that was selected to be honest. If you were going to make a recommendation, solely on the "ease of construction" - which kit would make the most sense? (i.e. Kitfox, RV, Zenith, Sonex, etc.), of course with a realistic approach to someone who works full time elsewhere?
@usslindstrom5 жыл бұрын
Understood on all points. Thank you for taking the time to respond. It looks like a really rewarding time doing the build process. I'll definitely take your advice and not purchase based solely on "ease of assembly" though. For your tips on the engine though... I have no doubt I'd be successful following the instructions - but I'd probably cut a sticker that warned people of the nature of the build, in tiny print for passengers that said "Warning, this engine was bolted together by a non-mechanical guy by any stretch of the word, ride at your own risk" :) Please don't ever stop posting videos of your builds, it's nice to see everything coming together.

Mark, as I was watching yo assemble the tail gear, a question I've been pondering for a while resurfaced. Occasionally on STOL aircraft but more commonly found on backcountry aircraft fitted with pontoon it's common to see a single or dual set of fins on the underside of the fuselage just in front of where the tail gear would be. My question is how do these fin function? to they add more tail authority and ideally reduce adverse yaw or somet5hing else? Your insights are appreciated.

When you are tightening bolts, do you do it to some tightness spec or just “until it feels tight”?
@tomcoryell4 жыл бұрын
I know you built it to the plans, but I think the plans are wrong. The bolts for the tail wheel should drop in from the top, not insert from the bottom. Of course you have castellated nuts and cotter pins, but if you somehow lose a nut, with the bolt in from the top, gravity will at least keep you from losing the bolt. Even the tiniest bits of safety margin can add up.

When do you plan on having the Zenith flying?
@kirbylee575 жыл бұрын
This is more like assembling an airplane than building one. Looks much easier than what I'm used to doing, which is just buying the plans, with a construction manual thats maybe a hundred pages at most. There sure is a big difference in getting the parts already made rather than having to build the parts and then assembling them, but I think there is a big difference in the amount of money you have to have. I guess the best way to go would depend on how much spare time you have, building skills, or ability and desire to learn, and of course the big one for all of us... money.I would almost feel like i'm cheating if I had assembly instructions as detailed as the ones in this video and the parts already made, but compared to building one from scratch, I wouldnt mind cheating a little. I think I'll take some time and go look one more time at the kitfox web page. maybe they are cheaper than they were last time i looked. :) yeah right.

A lot of times when you have to "enbiggin" (subscribe to AVE to funningly learn a lot about a lot) a hole is because the designers forget to incorporate the thickness of the powder coat (which tends to be thck in comparison to paint) on such parts.....happens all the time. The question is with a hole, was it intended to be removed (bare metal to metal) or left in place to prevent a point o of corrosion....who knows... Frankly, I prefer the old school bearing pack method where you skim grease into side of the races with your thumb while rotating the bearing......just to know fer sure....... Good luck on your build!

Try putting the grease in a ziplock with the corner off and use like a frosting bag. Minimal waste

Get an old time mechanic to show you how to pack a bearing without any fancy store bought gimmicks that make a mess and throw away those stupid gloves.. We have soap and water now. And pit some oil on the felt so it does its job....Th reason you make a mess is because you pump way too much grease... When you see the grease at the bottom of the bearing it is full. You can't make it any more full when you pump more grease into it. You re just wasting material. Use common sense. (Of course that has gone by the way side these days) The inner tube comes from Goodyear. Kitfox just sends it to you and charges you more money for it.
