Are there any temperature figures to glance at for these Core Ultra processors at single and multi core loads, vs competition? I assume higher power draw would mean higher temps, but would be interesting to see if there are any real improvements. One of the main reasons I stopped upgrading is because all new processors require a heatsink the size of which could be found in Superposition.
@lolerie14 күн бұрын
@ Thermalright Evo can remove 238 W of heat from the CPU, more than enough. Nope, power draw is not the same as temprature, AMD is inferiour here as its SOC crystall is much smaller and harder to cool.

They look promising on power use. I miss monolithic low latency dies though. Unfortunately reviews have not given them the credit they deserve so we are seeing them less and less. Anyhow, at the moment I am not super excited on any of current CPUs from AMD nor Intel. I'd probably use tuned 14900k/14700k now if I were to upgrade. (EDIT: on 5950x currently)

biggest problem with intel is their Stupid big/little design. Operating Systems and programs HATE IT when the threads they schedule tasks on have wildly different performance levels. Either you do all Pcores or all Ecores on a CPU. You never mix and match them. Also the memory I/O chiplet intel has is better than AMD's but only when carefully tuned. Intel needs to either put the I/O on the CPU tile and accept the large die size for it or they need to do a better job of dialing in the fabric clocks, voltages and sub/timings of their SKU's to reduce latency in future designs. AMD is already fixing their Memory I/O chiplet design with the next gen Zen6. The new I/O is not only on a smaller TSMC node its also being rebuilt to be 3X larger than a 12core CCD chiplet which is massive. This new I/O chiplet is likely built to reduce latency and support much higher speed CUDIMM memory modules at 9000-1000mhz with tighter timings for gear 1 and gear 2 which is the biggest bottleneck for AMD at this point. if they fix memory latency and boost CCD's to 12 cores making 12+24 core designs that will pretty much destroy Intel in the Desktop/laptop market for the next several generations.
@Saurabh-z1z10 күн бұрын

@brandonupchurch762815 күн бұрын
Still don't see the point, the CPUs are more expensive than their Raptor Lake counter parts, the platform is more expensive, seems like you pretty much have to use high clocked CU-DIMMs which cost like $200 for a cheap 32GB kit, where you can find 32GB DDR5 7200 now for like $100. The way I see the Core Ultra, Intel pretty much botched their foray into chiplets and are playing catch-up to what AMD figured out years ago. I'm not fully an "Intel Bad" guy either, LGA1700 offers a pretty great value right now and I find AMD to be quite lacking in the price to multi-core performance space these days, the 14600k almost competes with the 7900 in terms of multi core performance , while costing in the range of a 7600X or 9600X.

@brandonupchurch762815 күн бұрын
@ The 10nm silicon is just fine, the power consumption aspect isn't great if you leave the power limits unlocked, the 12th gen CPUs have no issues, the issues with 13/14th gen were due to transient voltage spikes from requesting excessive VID and motherboard manufacturers calibrating the loadline in a way that was excessive for single/dual core boosting behavior that causes excessive voltages to be ran through the CPU, these behaviors were corrected in BIS updates. There were a handful of truly defective 13th gen chips that came from a particular early batch at a particular fab but that's a very small sample and would not represent any currently purchasable chips.

Arrow Lake's one party trick is that you can outfit it with an absolute shitload of M.2 storage and not give up your x16 GPU slot. You technically wind up with less Gen 5 storage than AM5 (because AM5 can technically let you run 3 gen 5 M.2s where Arrow Lake only gets 1, albeit only via bifurcation of the x16 slot) but you don't have to give up anything to get 1 gen 5 and 3 gen 4 into Z890, where simply populating certain slots on AM5 sacrifices *something*... Though the exact what depends on the slot and the board.

Or to put it differently: they are >2.6× the price of decently highly clocked 2× 16 GB DIMMs. It just doesn't make sense to go Core Ultra w/o CU-DIMMs and with them you'd need some specific workloads to get better performance than a 9950X (let alone 3D when that releases).

It says exactly: "AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or better, or Intel Core i7 12700K or better)" and I don't think it means it always requires 8 (performance) cores. Basically i5-13600K is on par with i7-12700K, even Ryzen 5 7600X is much better than Ryzen 7 5700X and for Core Ultra... it's a mystery. It is also worth noting, that above requirements is for "1440p / 60 FPS / High Quality Settings", but we need only "AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th Generation CPU @3.2Ghz with 8 cores / 16 threads or better (examples: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or better, or Intel Core i7 10700K or better)" for "1080p / 60 FPS / Low Quality Settings", which is rather weird, as resolution has nothing to do with CPU requirements and in case of quality settings only things like ray tracing. I think CPUs like 12700K will be enough for much more than 60 fps.

Will you also test for power consumption in idle? I think intel has been more power hungry than AMD for sure, except for idle in some tests that I have seen. And during light desktop use it might run more efficient? I am not running Cinebench all day.

Arrow Lake CPU draws around 20W at idle, system draw around 100W. Raptor Lake CPU is less than 5W at idle and system draw around 80W. Zen 5 CPU is 25W at idle and 90W for system. Leo

Microcenter is selling 265k for only $230 right now when you buy a z890 mobo of your choice to go with it. I don't NEED an upgrade but it is very tempting because that price is amazing

I can remember you saying at the start that you wanted to wait for all updates to come out before you give your review on the core ultra to give it a fighting chance and you did! So hats off to you :) it just a shame windows 11 24H2 is problematic causing many issues including on the 9800X3D

This is a nice summary post updates and correlates with what i experience with my own 285k. One thing, if i can request, or point out as a nice addition. The 1080p low gaming benchmark on a $500+ CPU does not make any sense. Actually, does not make any sense on anything over $300 CPU. No one buys a CPU for that price to play games in 1080p low. And while the 1080p low benchmark shows the total power in specialized conditions, real life would show that 1440p and 4k is the resolution the wannabe consumer wants to know more about. And in 4k the 9800x3D does not have a substantial lead over the 285, or even the price competitive 265k.

Yeah, still going to wait for their next generation before specing my next build.(Which could still go AMD, I just want to see what comes along and let the AMD supply strain catch up too.) Heck, I may even drag my feet longer depending on rumors of Arc celestial release date.

My experience with the CPU has been good so far. The memory latency I measured was in the 70s (72 ns was the lowest I got to after some tuning). I also run my 265K mildly overclocked on a cheap air cooler, so my R24 scores are 2164 MT / 141 ST, making it faster than both prior gen flagships in both areas, after some mild overclocking. As for GPU I'm waiting for the 5070 Ti or maybe RX 9700 XT since I sold my last GPU prior to 50-series announcement. I do have a 240 Hz monitor, but I think I will be using multi-frame generation to get there in demanding games, so having the absolute fastest brute force gaming CPU doesn't matter to me. I ended up getting a 265K because of the Microcenter deal. They are running a sale where you get ~$130 off the CPU and another ~$70 off a motherboard if purchased at the same time. So a savings of around $200. It was $414+tax for the 265K plus motherboard for me. Had I built a 9800X3D machine (CPU+MOBO), it would have cost at least $200 more, the extra cost would not have been worth it in my situation...

The part of Intel and Windows updates is something nobody talks about, and that's the fact that 14th gen performance got a bigger boost than 200 series, so 14900k is now 14% faster than 285 as opposed to 7% before updates. Even less reason to upgrade. My 14900k is now a performance monster while being relatively cool, and perfectly reliable and dependable so far.

Couldn't score a 5090 Asstral yesterday. Currently have a i9-9900k on a maximus extreme board and 3090 strix. Figured since my gpu is considerably more powerful than my current cpu, to a point that its a potential bottleneck, I made a purchase on everything but the gpu. I bought a i9 ultra 285k, maximus extreme z890, ddr5 9000 2 x 24GB and a ryujin III 240 argb cooler. This gives me hope that I made the right decision. My current psu is the thor 1200w plat. My current panel PG32UCDP is going to see a huge uplift in frames I believe.

Helpful update, thank you. Question I don't feel like I have seen addressed anywhere - and tbf one that is not simply defined in implementation. Given differences in multicore processing, are differentials between 9800x3d and intel practical gaming results smaller the benchmarks? Let me explains - so the 9800x3d is unquestionably the king in gaming benchmarks, but it drastically trails in multicore benchmarks. For sure different use cases, so fair enough. But gaming benchmarks are run presumably with all possible unnecessary background processes closed of a clean test. Suspect average gamer has a variety of background apps running.... or in the extreme streamers with voicemeeter, obs, and whatever else running in the background. Curious at what point multicore performance has relevance to practical gaming performance, acknowledging its not the game itself but other threads running beyond the game?
@KitGuruTech13 күн бұрын
As you say, that depends on your use case and that is exactly why AMD is pushing the Ryzen 9 9950X/9950X3D. You get all the benefits of the Ryzen 7 with another 8 cores on stand-by to handle extra tasks and the only downside is extra cost. Leo

I feel it's unfair how many people act like Arrow Lake is a disaster. It's not Bulldozer, it just did nothing to move the performance needle and most people don't care about efficiency in a desktop environment. It's not "bad," it's just not very good considering the prices. The real problem is any new platform these days offer no motherboards below $200 anymore and decent ones are far closer to $300. Look how long AM5 took to offer affordable boards? If it weren't for X3D I bet AMD would _still_ have a hard time convincing anyone to give up their AM4 boards. It's also X3D that makes people think AMD is lightyears ahead of Intel when in reality they really aren't. Gamers live in this echo chamber where they think the only need for a fast CPU is gaming. Even when you _do_ account for gaming if you need to have a $2000 GPU and playing at 1080p to make it shine that's not a realistic scenario. But once you turn off the kiddie games and get away from GPU bottlenecks X3D falls flat on it's face and non-X3D Zen5 and Arrow Lake start to look far more appealing, while Raptor Lake gets even better when you can get a 20core i7 for half the price of a 9800X3D on a more affordable mobo. It's hilarious how many people want me to build them an X3D because they watched all the reviews, just to find out they're pairing it with a 4060 because GPUs are so overpriced. Don't get me wrong, X3D is an amazing technology for gaming but only for gaming and it's overpriced for an 8 core CPU in 2025. You need to keep in mind a lot of people _don't_ just play games. Intel is on the right track moving to advanced nodes and prepping 18A, but they need to remember gamers are the users that drive hype and hence drive share prices. They'll still outsell AMD in prebuilt desktops and laptops where most sales occur, but those are low margin sales and they need to remember gamers are fully in control of the hype train. They need to fast track their own vcache design they've been working on where it's embedded in the packaging if they want a win with gamers again. The real question is who's even running Intel these days? We've heard nothing but placeholder marketing BS since Pat's exit so it's hard to place faith in just having 18A listed as "coming soon." The _silence_ is deafening when Arrow Lake is disappointing and overpriced and there seems to be no leadership steering the ship. It's almost like they _want_ their share prices to tank so they can do a massive buy back.
