Not always the Alternator anymore like it used to be. A straight forward diagnostic with your DVM usually led to an Alternator failure but now with these computer controlled charging systems you have so much more to diagnose. Many an Alternator has been replaced because someone checked the voltage with a meter and saw low charging voltage when in actuality the computer had stopped the charging output of the Alternator and the fault lied with the control side of the system. Of course we must check power and grounds but things have changed a lot with these newer model vehicles.
