Curious question did the owner go for the cat replacement why not just leave it as it is if it’s running fine unless they have to do emissions testing annually? I just diagnosed this P420 code, accompanied with a P0171. After digging deep, figured out that an aftermarket MAF sensor was installed. The numbers looked just off of specifications when I was looking at Live Data on my scanner. I replaced the MAF sensor with OEM, and no more issues. So, an aftermarket MAF sensor can definitely throw off the ECU and set a check engine code. There were no vacuum leaks, voltage, and ground were within specification.

Thanks for your time. I feel you are hesitant to decide bad Cat this time. Maybe the cylinder pressure transducer will show if the Cat is blocked or not plus the o2 sensor 2 is acting weird which maybe needs changing also. All in all, it's a great video

Good Job " Hoss " ! ! Ex - Smog Repair Tech. Southern California In Northern California & Southern California their are " Two " Smog Technicians LICENSED by the State of California : Smog Inspectors & Licensed Smog Inspectors/Smog Repair Techs. I was in the 2nd Category. Smog Inspectors aren't allowed to do Smog Repair work. This woulda been my Steps : A curve Ball was thrown @ us with the Narrow Band Oxygen Sensor reading " Zero " Volts ! !....Since we were faced with this Curve Ball , Engine Running , Propane woulda been injected from the Brake Booster Hose & the Voltage should go Full Rich , turn the Propane off and it should go to Lean Voltage - Snap the Throttle - Freeze the Lab Scope Screen and the Lab Scope TIME difference should be Less than 85 ms ( milliseconds )...If it Failed that Test , the Sensors Speed is Lazy. ( Sensor should be Replaced ) 1000 ms = 1 Second ! ! Conduct the same Test on the Wide Band Air Fuel Sensor. If we weren't presented with this Alligator problem, these Steps would be implemented. 1) Run Engine @ 2,500 RPM for 2 - 3 minutes to ensure that the Vehicle is in Closed Loop Status. .....Lift the Vehicle.....With the Pyrometer/Temperature Gun - Measure the Inlet of the CAT @ that Weld Seam that's near the Sensor and do the same thing @ the Outlet Rear Weld Seam...The Outlet Temperature should be @ least 10 Degrees greater that the Inlet Temperature if the CAT passed the Test 2 nd Test : From the California State 5 - Gas Analyzer Machine : Conduct a California Smog Catalytic Converter Cranking CO2 % ( Carbon Dioxide ) Test . Run Engine @ 2,500 RPM for 2 - 3 minutes....Disable the Ignition System ONLY ( not the Fuel System )....Crank the Engine for 10 Seconds with the Analyzer Probe inside the Tailpipe - when the Readings Stabilize - the CO2 % should be greater than 12.5 % & the HCs' ( Hydrocarbons - Unburned Fuel should be Less than 500 HC ppm....If only one of those Gas Readings Pass - it's still a Failure. My 3rd Test would be to Test Drive the Vehicle with my Aftermarket Scan Tool - If it's an OBII Vehicle - 1996 & Newer ....( It is plugged into the Data Link Connector )....This Aftermarket Scantool that's plugged into the DLC cost $1,595.00...It will display a Grade of 0 % - 100 %....Every Hi School Student in Frederick , Maryland knows that a Grade of below 70 % is a Failing Grade....Paperwork will be given to the Customer. Okay good job..on replacing the fuel tank.. on the Corolla.. however. Fire extinguisher should be handy and draining the tank would help b4 removing the unit..stressing also to viewers to disconnect the battery and discharging online capacitors just in case some of these circuits, I would use the mallet asap just moi. What auto parts store did you use..many fakes out-there?How much was the unit oooh?

Wideband o2 (A/F) sensor voltage readings are useless. They don't work like that. Current can be used. Negative current=rich, positive current=lean. simple.

Sounds like the cat could be partially blocked, this could lead to engine not wanting to start, hence the code for engine start problem.

He came to his Final conclusion by measuring the Inlet and Outlet Temperature with a Pyrometer/ Temperature Gun. The Outlet Temperature should register a minimum of 10 Degrees Fahreheit Hotter than the Inlet Temperature when measured @ those Weld Seams near both of the Sensors. Measured with a Portable 5 Gas Emissions Analyzer or a State Approved California Smog Machine - you have an Exhaust Leak if the O2 % ( Oxygen Readings) are greater than 2 % and the HC ( Hydrocarbons Unburned Fuel ) are way too High. O2 % is Normal when it displays 1 % - 2 % ) Ex - Smog Repair Technician Southern California

***When I had a 2004 4runner, I got the " catalyst converter below threshold bank 1" code. I changed out one O2 sensor, problem solved.

You were Lucky , which was Good. The Next thing you're supposed to do is determine what caused the CAT Failure by Testing the Ignition System & the Fuel Pressure Delivery System . Ex - Southern California Smog Repair Technician

2014 and the cat already failing? First, you should fix the exhaust leak and see if the code disappears. Then, a good aftermarket O2 sensor like Denso or NGK to see if the new sensor takes less time to respond, because the one on the vehicle takes a bit to respond on the scanner, so maybe it's lazy. We can return aftermarket parts to the supplier if we don't need them after an investigation, I don't know about you. Then, at the last moment, consider replacing the cat. You did replace the nox sensor on that Mercedes Sprinter some weeks ago because it was lazy, it took at least 20 mins to respond, why not do the same with the O2? OEM Cats are expensive and they should last the life of the vehicle, so I don't know about this one.

Check for Spark - Fuel Pressure - then provide a Compression Check - but First , check if PCM ( Computer Fuse ) - Ignition Fuse - Fuel Pump Fuse & Fuel Pump Relay is working. If you only work on cars once a Year , - take it too a reputable Auto Shop that KNOWS how to conduct those Tests.
