The kitsune is my third favorite mythical creature. They are also said to be able to control spirits called willow wisps. They also hold a sphere that said to hold their powers and if you get a hold of it, the kitsune will be under your control. But after it gets it back it will kill you. You can also tell one apart by getting it drunk because it will revert back to a fox.

In my minds imagination foxes are possibly the most visible of all demonic entities, the Haunting Foxes usually revealing via shapeshifter / poltergeist-signs. They are indeed very cunning & deceptive, and also seems predatory this way. But, They are also beautiful, fascinating Phenomenal by nature & can usually be seen travelling longer distance as fireflies 🧚‍♀️ (🔥fairies) Demonic entities usually have their distinctive traits and stench of character (but perhaps not so much of actual personality?,) Anyhow The Fox will posess the minds & challenge the sanity in the host. And the affectation can be very complex at first, Initial signs resemble mental disorder, initially you'll likely enter into states resembling common mania combined with aroused eccentric behavior, But as you are being succumbed the fox, you'll quickly be drained of personality in stages this will resemble both animality and the world of hungry spirits, but eventually you'll become a being-like machination controlled by the Kitsune. What Actually Happens If You Would Lose Yourself to the Fox, , I would guess you lose your life but Im not sure how? But Im very certain I would do my best to avoid such a fate in the first place.

Overall, Kitsune just seem to be powerful magical creatures in Japanese folklore. And like any powerful being, they could use their powers and talents for good, evil, or trolling humans and other Kitsune. Just like how in various fictions we see magic used by both the forces of good and evil.

And.. not all kitsune are sexual deviants.. just saw a short video painting kitsune as being like the succubus.. there is one type of the MANY types of kitsune called Nogitsune which will seduce men (and rarely women) and lead them to their doom, even being able to bring down the strongest priest.

When i was in Japan I was staying in a Buddhist temple and there was a Shinto Fox Shrine at the top of the hill over from the temple hidden by the trees. I would always go there and talk to the priest who managed the local shrines and he told me about the fox of that shrine (foxes are one of my favourite animals). He said the fox was called something like "Shako-Kubino-Gitsune" which means something like "The Red Fox of 9 Tails". He said it was a red fox spirit who lived in those hills and was a quiet being who contemplated philosophy and magic. We were in a town close to Nagoya and he said that one time, Nobunaga was out on campaign and left this city under the protection of one of his retainers. One of the samurai who belonged to this retainer took advantage of Nobunaga not being there and started being nasty to the people of the common people of the many villages. The fox heard the complaints of the common people and came down from the hills to meet the Samurai and challenged him to combat which the Samurai had to accept or be dishonoured. The fox produced a magic sword blessed by the gods and with it he defeated the Samurai, shaming him. The Samurai took his own life for the same of his actions and for losing the fight and the common people were happy for the fox so they built him a shrine on the hill where he lived and the gods blessed the shrine, giving the fox his 9 tails and turning him gold and named him Shako Kubino Gitsune. I loved all of these stories and would visit as many Shinto shrines as I could find to learn the little stories about them.

Wow, that is very interesting! Good for you. There are so many shinto shrines, big and small, public and private, Inari or not, in Japan, and every one of them has their own back stories and histories, I bet. I couldn't pinpoint the shrine of yours here, and I cannot figure out what Shako means (I need to see what Kannji stands for it), but I am sure that Kubino-gitsune is Kyuubi-no-kitsune 九尾の狐 (Nine-tailed Fox). (No-gitsune could be 野狐, which means a wild/field fox.)

There is one particularly known nine-tailed fox spirit from Chinese mythology named Da Ji (who is also in the MOBA Smite). She was especially known as an insane sadist, her greatest joy in life being screams of agony and terror. She is even credited as the inventor of a torture instrument called a "paolao", a huge metal pillar that would be filled wtih fire, have burning coal place around it, and then oiled (at least at the top). The victim would be place on top of it, giving Da Ji a show as the burning hot pillar caused the victim to "dance", with the oily surface often leading to them slipping and falling down into the burning coal at the bottom.

Yeah I was surprised when he said that the seductress fox spirit is unique only to Japan when I know Da Ji was a Chinese fox spirit seductress (even supposedly being one of the original ideas for the Kitsune and for the most famous Kitsune being Tamamo no Mae) I know that Korean myths also have their own fox spirit called Kumiho/Gumiho inspired by Chinese & Japanese folklore. Similar to Kitsune & Da Ji, they were 9 nine tailed fox spirits who can transform into beautiful women to seduce and lure unsuspecting men to then devour their preys' heart and or liver. I know Kumiho/Gumiho was the main inspiration for League of Legends' Ahri.

That's how I first knew about Daji... I know that in Warriors Orochi 3 (in its future installments) they included Tamamo-no-Mae (Daji's Japanese fox spirit counterpart) as a separate character.

I normally don't comment on KZbin videos anymore, but since you said to add anime that feature Kitsunes, one that I really like is Kiitarou Shounen no Youkai Enikki/Kiitarou's Youkai Picture Diary. The episodes are really short (5 minutes or less) and each episode focus on a youkai, or group of youkai. It's also a pretty cute, funny, and weird (but that's a given since it's heavily inspired by various types of Youkai) show.

I was waiting on a video of my favorite Japanese Yokia. Also to note if you didn't mention it is that Kitsune's are very honorable with their debts. But also avoid owing anything to humans at the same time. It's been a while since I heard but I think there was one story where a blacksmith (I think. Again it has been a while.) who rescued and nursed a kitsune back to health. And he died before she could repay her debt. So she taught his son to be a much better blacksmith than his father as a way to repay her debt before leaving.

Of the tales that I have heard concerning the Oinari, "She who returns" might be my favorite. In most tales the Oinari upon discovery runs away never to return. Here she marries, is a beloved wife, and has a son. The husband takes a fancy to some dogs which she begs him to take away. He refuses. One day the dogs attack her, she reveals herself, and flees. Regretful, the husband calls for her for a year telling her he still loves her, and she will always be the mother to his son. Finally defeated, he cries in his bed. She appears before him because she can not bear to see him in pain, and they spend the night together. Each night she returns then leaves in the morning as long as he lives.

The only kitsune I am familiar with is from the tv show Teen Wolf. In the second half of season two, they are introduced in two characters, Kira and her mother. They also emphasize that there are 12 different kinds of good kitsune, like the thunder kitsune or the celestial kitsune. I was always very curious to find out what the differences are between them. If you are familiar with them and what their powers may be, I’d be very interested to hear about them.

Yes, the Huli Jing, the Fox Spirit, is originally from Chinese mythology. As Chinese aspects would influence Japanese and Korean cultural development, the mythos of the Fox Spirit became part of their folklores as well. And about Daji, she was the wife of Emperor Di Xin aka Emperor Zhòu Wáng, the last Emperor of the Shang Dynasty. In true life, Emperor Di Xin, in his later years, fell into immoral behavior.....in legends his wife, Daji (was given the blame) corrupted him into evil immoral deeds.....in fiction Daji was the favorite consort who was a Huli Jing, a fox spirit, who inspired the Emperor into evil actions.

Jiuweihu (nine-talied fox) is a type of Huli Jing (fox spirit). There are other types of Huling Jing besides the nine-tailed: The three-tailed Yaohu and the six-tailed Liuweimahu, depending on the time of the fox's absorbing energy

It's interesting how many foxes in different folklore are related to fire. In some native American folklore (Apache iirc), it was the fox who stole fire from fireflies a-la Prometheus. In other tribes, this story is about Coyote instead.

I found it interesting how you didn’t mention anything about a kitsune’s shadow: In case you didn’t know, there are theories that one of the ways you can identify a kitsune is by looking at their shadow. They either don’t have one or their shadow is shaped like a fox, the rumor varies from story to story. I’m not sure if this is true but thought it would be cool to mention. Btw, I just wanted to say I’ve enjoyed watching your videos over the past few months. Your content is very educational and I enjoy the bits of analysis you sprinkle throughout your videos. Thanks for doing what you do. Sorry this comment is so long.

There is a popular folklore which is also adapted into the Noh play "Kokaji" about the sword Kogitsunemaru (little fox). The story is about the popular swordsmith Kokaji Munechika. the Emperor Ichijo commissioned him to craft a sword and as he looked for an assistant to help him forge the sword, he received the help of an Inari diety. Kogitsunemaru is one of the characters in the popular Japanese game Touken Ranbu which basically featured personified versions (tsukumogami) of popular Nihonto (Japanese sword). ^^

By far the best anime depicting Kitsune well is 'Spice and Wolf'. It really emphasizes the old Inari style Kitsune with it's hatred for dogs, association with wheat, and trickster/seductress vibe. Also a charming, well made series... definitely worth a watch if you're fascinated with the lore.

It seems to me that shape-shifters, faeries, and Yokai are all on par with each other. They are often portrayed as entities that are neither demons or angels, and lie on the side of human existence. As such like humans themselves they can be either good or evil and I suppose it depends on who is telling the story.

Pu Songling (1640-1715) was a well known Chinese author who wrote weird and strange stories about ghosts, fox spirits, demons, and just plain strange events that people, through letters or word of mouth, told him about. Penguin publishing company just released a greag edition of his complete stories, and they're very short, and are very interesting to read, especially if you are very familiar with anime. This is just an aside, some of his stories are very (ahem) steamy. Not graphic in detail, mind you. I heard from a podcast (HPPodcraft.com) that one of the host's Chinese friend knee about Pu Songling through soft porn movies.

There is a Kitsune(named Kitsune) in the Super Nintendo Game called "Shadowrun". She is proficient in magic, and seems to be morally good. She helps your character and works with the "Spirit of Dog". Though she plays a minor role, and I won't spoil anything in the game, I figured it was worth this Kitsune was worth mentioning.

there isn't that much to say about Daji. In the novel Fengshen Yanyi aka The Investiture of the Gods Daji, the favorite consort of Emperor Zhou, who corrupted the Emperor resulting in his overthrow and the end of the Shang Dynasty. This fictional story featured many supernatural creatures on both sides of the overthrow, Daji, while the source of the evil and corruption in the final years of the Shang Dynasty, was one of many supernatural creatures in the story.

Not really. Furry is a recent phenomenon that started with old cartoons. Originally it was just people who liked cartoons and characters who were anthro animals. Not in a sexual way though, obviously. Pretty sure nobody is actually into Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny. Sexual aspects cropped up later on with the advent of characters like Minerva Mink, and Lola Bunny.
