Great to see someone who's never seen hurling before enjoy it so much! As an Irishman myself, I would love to see it played more globally. As regards the hurling vs gaelic football debate, I wouldn't say there's a rivalry per se, both are played across the country, but most counties do prefer one or the other; hurling is the main one played in Munster, Galway & South Leinster while the further north you go, the more likely it is that gaelic football is the most played. There are exceptions (like Kerry in Munster being the most successful football team and Galway & Cork oftentimes being good at both), but that's the general rule.

Fraxinus, commonly called ash, is a genus of flowering plants in the olive and lilac family, Oleaceae. It contains 45-65 species of usually medium to large trees, mostly deciduous, though a number of subtropical species are evergreen. The genus is widespread across much of Europe, Asia, and North America

Hurling requires great hand -eye co-ordination,If you are right handed you carry your hurl in your right hand, meaning you have to catch the ball with your left hand -this takes loads of practice ,before it becomes natural instinct. This is not a game for wimps, but to have played hurling -no other sport can match, your hurley becomes an extention of your right arm,and young lads carry their hurls with them all the time.

It's a religion in Munster and South Leinster. I'm from Ulster and I don't really get it tbh. We played Gaelic, rugby, basketball and football in school. I played hurling once when the GAA had some initiative to get kids in non hurling counties to play it. It would be tough to get hurling played widespread when they can't even get it played in every county in Ireland. It was fun to play though..

When you’re watching the action shots remember that if you’re touch tight to your opponent it’s almost impossible for their hurley to hit you, unless they’re trying to do you, which isn’t unusual. When you swing the extension of your arms mean the length of your arms is a radius where the hurley won’t hit.

We used be the powerhouse of hurling but we’re lost in the desert of our longest barren spell in history. The final of the League - the second most prestigious competition is next Sunday, 9 April so get your vpn out and set your alarm. It’ll be a good match, Kilkenny v Limerick.

Gaelic football has the same basic rules but no stick and a football instead. Slower and less skilled but more popular cus its more accessible. Hurling tends to be played in the regions where cricket pitches used to be and the football more in the poorer land. Big generalisation but when we got our independence in the 20s we began to play these banned sports again and it was easier to play hurling on the better cricket surface.

One interesting thing between the GAA sports is that there is sort of a north/south divide. Someone made a map of all Ireland winners of the last couple decades and for hurling it’s nearly always southern counties and for football it’s all northern counties. Course it’s not a rule but there is a slight divide (and by north and south I mean whole island not political north south)

On the question of injuries, hurlers learn from a young age where not to put their heads. Cruciate injuries are common though, because the twisting and turning shown by the elite hurlers is quite hard on the knees. No one is really interested in making Gaelic games professional, we play for pride.

There is no debate really on going professional, nobody really wants that, not even the players, the players do get expenses and from time to time there are calls for the players to be better compensated, but profesionalism would open up the whole area of players transferring to different teams, which is totally against the ethos of the games. You can only play for the county were you were born or where you live. As regards Gaelic Football v Hurling, they are both gaelic games and most clubs and counties have both a Gaelic Football team and a Hurling team (as well as LGFA (ladies Gaelic Football and Camogie (Ladies hurling). Gaelic Football is more widespread throught the island of Ireland, whereas hurling while played in every county is only strong in roughly a third of the counties, mainly in munster and south leinster. There is a definite hurling community and a football community and there is a healthy rivalry between them.

Hurling is an incredibly skillful game, and the big games viewed by crowds rivalling the English Premiership. It has the skills of soccer, tennis, cricket, hockey, baseball, rugby and lacrosse. You can not play it without getting some kind of injury. In general one gets more injuries when you hang back. The atmosphere at a big game is incredible, and the banter of rival crowds highly entertaining.

Gaelic & Hurling are both part of the GAA (The Gaelic Athletic Association) so there wouldn't be a rivalry between the different sports themselves. Gaelic is 700+ years old & Hurling is about 3000 years old, and is said to be the oldest & fastest field sport in the world. Teams are made up of different Counties like Dublin, Cork, Galway, etc. So obviously Counties would be rivals. There's also smaller local teams in each County, so some players would play for their local team, and if they're good enough they might play for their County. There might be rivalries between local teams, but they'd all come together for their Counties games. Regarding payment, as they are Amateurs they arent paid. They may get Expenses but not much more. Which is ridiculous coz for big games the Stadiums can hold over 80k people @ €90 per person. Which adds up to a whole lotta wedge. So I don't know how that works out.

A few points! Kilkenny will forever be the greatest at this sport. Second, Gaelic football is no way as skillful. All people from football loving counties will understand why I say it's a stupid pointless sport. Third, the skills of the game haven't changed much in a long time but players have become super fit in recent generations. No sport has such fit athletes. Next, should it be professional? Ah feck don't know! Players deserve it for the level of commitment. They train as much as any professional sport but also hold down full-time jobs. (They have God status in the community) However, people worry whether it could somehow ruin what all (in hurling counties) agree is the greatest game on earth. Finally, to gain the kind of hand eye coordination and learn/practice/master all those skills it is generally agreed (and studied academically) that you need to start playing no later than 6 to get to an intercounty level (highest standard). This is not true of Garlic footing about. Oh, and anyone who says that Gaelic football is better can insert a hurl up .... (musical interlude) ......... arse. It might just help them see sense.

Hurling can only be compared to sports where the players have some type of stick, like Hockey. It’s pointless comparing Hurling to Gaelic football or association football. As to your point that “no sport has such fit athletes”, I’d like to hear what the participants in the Tour de France would have to say about that. One thing about hurling though, it has very few rivals in boasting about how good it is compared to other sports. It’s really strange, most other sports just get on with their chosen sport, and don’t comment on other sports.
