Your essays and ECs are SO important, especially at schools with so many applicants. I had a 3.68 UW/4.4 W and a 34/36sc and didn't think I would get in to either USC or UCLA because of my GPA, but I also got in to both. My biggest advice is to start your essays early and work on them over time! Show you.

as far as i know, 5.0 scales are really only for rankings within high school classes. without ap and honors courses counting more, more competitive high schools tend to have several students around the same level! it just makes it easier to declare ranking, valedictorian, etc which can help apps!

schools do weighed GPA's because it rewards you for taking a harder class. At my school a AP class is on a 5.0 scale so even if you get a b in the class it counts as a 4.0. It makes sense because your gpa is rewarded for taking a harder class

UCLA is my dream school. Congrats on getting in!!! I try watching as many videos of people who got into UCLA and their stats. I thought it was amazing you talked about your parents and it reminded me of my grandparents. They moved to the US from Mexico when they were 16 with no money and little knowledge. My grandma worked in the field picking strawberries and my grandpa helped built houses. They ended up saving money to buy a piece of land and built a house surrounded with hundreds of avocado trees which only cost them 350k. Now the property is worth 4.6M and they now sell their avocados to big companies. They are truly my biggest inspiration just like your parents are to you. Anyways, congrats on getting in and I'm sure that this video will help high school students a ton. :)

Bro, I wish I went to your school. My school is like many schools out there that only gave us the hardest option of AP to do in sophomore year (which was the only AP that was offered for that year smh). So either kids went in that direction or just took regular history because we thought it would just take too much of a toll on our mental health. Another thing was that we were only offered spanish and french so mandarin wasn't an option. And it's not like we could get credits outside of school for another course because there were many courses that our school didn't accept credits from. Also, we couldn't take AP's outside of school so the weight wouldn't be added to our GPA in the end. The atmosphere in general was just too competitive and stressful since people wanted to know what you were doing all the time. There are many different types of strict parents: some that force/expect their kids to take many AP's or ones like mine that didn't allow us to use our potential to take more advanced classes which ultimately landed me into taking one AP class junior year even though I wanted to take 3. That too, AP Psych, the easiest class at our school. (smh again) One of my dream schools is UCLA and my parents are forcing my future path to go to community college or go to a for-profit school that I don't want to go to, so in the end, basically, I am pretty screwed. I have never done extra-curricular activities or sports outside school because I am not allowed to and haven't done a lot of volunteering because, yeah.....i'm not really allowed to. My parents aren't letting me take the SAT. soo yeah. Also, I'm not allowed to drive until I complete high school so that makes it even worse. Even if I end up going to community college after high school and try switching 2 years after, my parents will still disagree and I can't disobey them because they're all I have. Do you have any advice for what I can do to improve my situation? sorry for the rant.
@alittlebitofeverything20504 жыл бұрын
Hey. You can't base your life decisions on others expectations. I understand they're your parents and its difficult to tell them no. But you have to explain to them what you want to do with your life. If you base your future on what others expect you'll be miserable. I just recently told my mom that hey, I dont want to be a doctor. She was upset but understood eventually. You just need to tell them. You cant live your life through someone else's eyes. You can sign up for the SAT and apply to UCLA. They cant really stop you from applying or taking a test. It will be difficult though, but even if they are parents they need to understand
@alittlebitofeverything20504 жыл бұрын
Sorry if that seemed cold
@harjotkaursaini4 жыл бұрын
@@alittlebitofeverything2050 Oh no you're good and in fact, I am grateful that you took the time to respond. But I've already tried that many times unfortunately. My dad is a doctor so he is at work 6 out of 7 days in the week. And I stay with my mom most of the day so whenever she's free, I try to bring it up, but most of the time she doesn't want to hear it or she says to talk about it with my dad. My dad is very adamant about me becoming a doctor and doesn't want to listen to anything else. My oldest brother is already on the path that they want (which is the same for me) and they use him as an example every time. He hates it, and I bring that up to my parents but they say that even if he hates it now, in the end, it is ultimately what is best for him and he won't regret it in the future. He pulls all-nighters a lot & he transferred from a UC to a for-profit undergraduate medical college which is relatively new and my brother says that the system is really bad. My parents want to believe what they want to believe and are really stubborn though. : (

@frenfraismekdi4 жыл бұрын
congrats!! im so happy for you🥺🧡
@calebk76924 жыл бұрын
Just to answer your question, high schools like doing the GPA to help do class ranking (valedictorian, salutatorian). So basically the weighted gpa is I believe like .25 extra points for honors classes and .5 for ap and ib classes. This makes it a bigger and more competitive competition for Salutatorian and Valedictorian. If they don’t have weighted GPA, or if they have a cap on the weighted GPA, then there will most likely be multiple valedictorians. I hope this helped! ❤️❤️❤️

Weighted GPAs are still sent and used by the admissions office because it can include the difficulty of your AP and Honors classes. Some schools however do not calculate Weighted GPAs for many reasons. Right now my Unweighted GPA is at a 3.7 (which does not look too good), but my Weighted GPA is a 4.2 closer to 4.3. Weighted GPAs just put Unweighted GPAs into a different perspective, and some schools use the Weighted more than the Unweighted.

I’ve always taken AP and honors classes but had mostly A’s w/ a couple of B’s and one C. I had semesters in my freshman year (12 classes). My school switched to trimesters the next year (15 classes). This past trimester tho really has screwed up with my GPA 😢 we couldn’t have Finals (which would have upped my A- to A’s or let us have the extra time for drop dead dates) because school has been cancelled for the past 3 weeks for the Corona Virus. I had a lot of events (FBLA State, SkillsUSA state, KC DECON, Jostens renaissance, Powerlifting state meet, and RYLA) but now I can’t really say I had those experiences. :( I hope my GPA and AP classes won’t be severally effected that it effects my ability to get into some reach schools. 🤷🏽♀️🥴

in my school, you had to take 7 classes and there was an honors thing that you could graduate with. if you took 10+ AP classes, you would receive a high ranking, but it had to be with a high gpa and you had to do a big project in which you create your own podcast and your own presentation and present it in front of lots of people with information that you got from professionals, which was intense.

I'm a junior but I need to start preparing for college and it's stressing me out! I need A LOT of help on things like what to actually write on my college essay, different ways to improve my SAT score and stuff of that sort, sort of the college application process... could you do a video on something of that sort? it would be SO HELPFUL

I’d be happy to help. I’m a current senior in high school and definitely have some good advice/tips if you’re interested.

I think the colleges might factor them into your gpa when they recalculate it at admissions!

What if you are from another country and your school does not takes SAT, ACT, or whatever does american test. They don't even calculate your GPA and we don't have highschool :|

At my school we do weighted because of the amount of people taking honors/ap classes. About 1/5 of my grade takes only honors/ap for all of their classes so it’s a big drop-off compared to people only taking academic level

wow, my Canadian school could never. I really wish I could get into an Ivy League school but I'm just too average. Not to mention, my school doesn't even offer AP, IB or honours. Anyways, your literally such an admirable student like what the heck.
