@KlassicallyKept Before detangling, I smooth the hair from the roots to the ends twice to stretch the hair. On the last stretching, I used my leave in conditioner. Then I finger detangle. Then braid that part, but I used oil to seal in the moisture while braiding my hair. And do the same for the rest of my hair

Not using combs caused me to lose so much hair from my hair knotting up. Finger detangling works for some, but not for all. Brushes are a no-go for me, but a good old rake comb does wonders for me.

The knotting is caused by dryness. Your dry strands are trying to get moisture, usually the ones furthest from the scalp and natural oil, and bind to the other hairs when there’s none left. A daily mist every 12 hours with just water will reduce it

I used to only finger detangle but my strands are so fine that it wasn't actually enough. I would find small matted sections on occasion that my fingers missed. I compare it to using only a wide tooth comb vs a fine tooth comb: the fine tooth comb will be better at getting every strand in line while the wide tooth will miss some simply because there is more room between the teeth for tangles to hide in. If this or another issue happens over time Mya, you may want to use a tool once a season or so to be sure you are root to tip detangled and avoid any unwanted locs. Good luck!

I think this was my issue as well. My strands have been labeled as fine, though I have a lot of it, by my stylist. I’m not certain if it is fine but I did struggle with constant tangles and matting. Finger detangling was not getting it all but then again my pursuit into finger detangling was short lived at best.

Very tru! And if you have high density, fine strands like me, webbing, matting and coil locking are a major issue and finger detangling alone cant really take care of. I have to finger detangle first and then go in with my tangle teaser to actually detangle my hair.

Great idea, and good luck with this journey! I'm type 4 as well, its 6 inches long and constantly curls up on itself and shrinks as the style gets old. I realized that it defeated the purpose to use a brush/comb, thats not really made for my hair, or any Afro-textured hair. I feel a lot better about my hair now, not seeing all my hair in a brush. For those with hair like mine, use your fingers to gently pull down the length of your hair and gently spread when you get to the ends. This is working great for me so far.

I understand exactly what you mean. I mostly finger detangle except for wash days where I often use a comb but I had to make the conscious decisions about the best/effective moment to use it because I only want to use it once during my wash day. Usually I would finger detangle then comb detangle before my shampoo ONLY in order to remove a maximum of shed hairs and prevent more knots and tangles before my hair touches water. During the shampoo, deep condition, rinsing style I finger detangle at every step with the help of water in order to keep it untangle and get rid of any shed hair the comb may have missed. That's how I avoid combing my hair multiple times on wash days.

I will not be joining you with the finger detangling, doll, but I hope this works well for you! I'm a straight natural, and my waist-length hair has been thriving with daily combing and brushing; I lose only a bit to the wiglet/chihuahua portions I used to lose when wet detangling! I now oil detangle on dry hair, and wash in sections. I'm using a shampoo and deep conditioner combo with chebe in them, so I'm interested to see what it does for my hair. I definitely agree with you on the regular trims, because what is length without health? I have to let my stylist do it though, because I'll get scissor-happy immediately, lol! Good luck to you! ❤

your process sounds so similar to mine! i’m not a straight natural but rather a stretched natural, either with blow outs on wash day or through braid outs. i detangle with oil too and gently do so with a brush; wet combing my hair tends to do so much more damage unless i’m super careful doing teeny tiny sections. our hair can be so versatile it can be confusing to know what will work bc ppl swear by different methods! i don’t doubt that finger detangling only does good for some girlies but me? it would have my hair matted af from all the missed shed hairs 🤣.

Hi Mya😊 Best luck as you try out finger detangling. You're always so thorough about sharing results (which I genuinely appreciate), so I can't wait to hear what you have to share. Personally, after a whole lot of struggling, I finally cut what needed to go (after making improvements to my hair routine). A good, intentional cut/trim when needed will solve a lot of your hair issues, as afrikanhairgod always mentions😂 I knew my hair needed it when, even after keeping up with my hair regularly, finger detangling was still a hassle. I have finally been able to reduce brushing to once every washday during the pre-shampoo stage. I also finger detangle my twists every 2 or 3 weeks in-between washdays so that I'm not relying on just one detangle sesh to remove shed hair. That has also been a breeze since my haircut.

I see you point on excessive combing your hair. I have tried only finger detangling my hair. It worked for me my hair doesn’t get smooth at all. I did for healthy hair and not the look. Went I started detangling my hair with a wire tooth comb, my hair looks more smoother. My routine was and still is shampoo my hair, section my hair in four, apply deep conditioner, detangle my hair with my fingers or wide tooth comb, put them in 4 big twists, put a plastic cap, put some low heat, rinse the deep conditioner out, install my mini twists with a cream but I don’t use any comb, I only use my fingers. I don’t comb my hair or do nothing until next wash day. My thing is when I detangle with a comb, my hair is smoother and my twists come out really good and twists out are more defined. I don’t know if I could just do only finger detangling only. I do enjoy my hair looking smooth and not messy. I support you in your journey and I can’t wait to see your results.

My tactic is to do one good detangle. Sadly my strands are too thin to not use a tool at all. I will say, though, the flexible brushes have been WAY better than the wide tooth comb (which is still p stiff to me). When I go back to the hard wide tooth comb, I see breakage, so I am gentle w/ the detangling brush.

Funny to come across this video because I just took the leap and put the detangling brush down. I must say it’s hard because I’ve been using brushes for many years. I have butt length fine hair. Went from above my ears to butt length in about 4 years. So far I’ve noticed less shed and a much deeper relationship with my hair with finger detangling. It’s almost like a spiritual experience to be honest. It definitely takes longer but so far it’s worth it and I enjoy the alone time with my hair and myself. I guess I’ll see how it goes. I wonder if people understand that finger detangling allows our curls to pop more without gels and other curl definers. Combs and brushes disturb the curl pattern, along with causing breakage and thin.

@cookiedoughmonstertravels4469

A part of the reason that finger detangling allows the curls to pop is because you are in affect shingling the hair as you go through. A proper curly hairbrush like a tangled teaser or a Denman brush passing through the hair after it has been properly entangled will actually enhance the curl pattern, not break it up. Conversely, yes, using combs will definitely break up the curl pattern, as well as break the ends of the hair and pull out hair attached to the shed hairs that are still connected to the scalp. Detangling can also make the curls clump because the hair is not really separated properly…. This can lead to tangling and locking within the Curls. Take for example in the shower rinsing your hair With water in your fingers, the curls are gonna pop… Compare that to rinsing out in the shower with water and a comb or a brush in most cases, The curls are going to separate as opposed to clump. But You can always get your hair to clump later outside of the shower when the hair is fully tangled. I think starting off your week/month with properly cleansed and entangled hair is very important. If you’re starting off with knots shed hair and clumped curls a week or two weeks in and you might have a problem. I’m just saying I’ve been there.

I did finger detangling only for about 2 yrs… it didnt work out for me. I had tried different wide tooth combs(including a very expensive seamless bison bone comb) they all ripped my hair out and disturbed my curl pattern when i was trying to curl-train my hair. Finger detangling (alone) is not for me! It took SO long! I would get frustrated and have to stop or make myself push thru and finish… which i hate to do. I only like to touch my hair when im in good energy and ready to deal with her calmly. I started putting off wash days for too long and my scalp started to suffer as well as my hair would get matted from being left alone for too long. Also my ends got real ugly and ratty. The good thing was my hair got fuller… but that can also be attributed to all the ayurvedic herbs i had gone back using to at that time. After about 2 yrs, i learned about the tangleteaser (style brush… i say this style cause the off- brand dollar tree “shampoo brush” and the conair version of it work just as well for me). One of my OG hair gurus, Curly Proverbz put me on to this brush as she was going thru the same thing as me. She got sick of how long finger detangling took and i think she actually helped them develop the thick and curly version cause her hair was too thi k for the original). With the proper lubricant (like flax seed gel or a slippery conditioner with oil) and a tangle teaser, Brushing in gentle strokes, moving up in VERY small increments from ends to roots… there is little to no breakage. In terms of making sure im not pulling hairs from the scalp that are not shed, i “de-web” each section of my hair before detangling it. This step helps to break up webbing that contains shed hairs that are crossing and holding hair still embedded in my scalp. …i learned this step/technique during my 2-yr stint finger detangling. Good luck on your journey!

It’ll be nice to see how it goes for you, hopefully well. I stopped using combs 4 months ago and so far I love it. It requires me to really be patient and get to know my hair. PreciousFro and Cocoa in Kyoto really articulated how non-beneficial combs can be overtime, in a way that finally clicked for me. 😅

Hello A! Patience will definitely be key for this part of the journey. It cant be rushed and you most definitely cannot be upset when finger detangling.

3 times in wash day definitely sounds like too much. I do once per wash day (once a week) and that seems to work fairly well. I did try finger detangling only for a while at one point, but my hair started to loc so I stopped. Hopefully you'll see great results though! I feel like you have a lot more patience than me.

Hey Bion, lol I do have patience when it comes to my hair. I am excited to see how this plays out.

Should I try this? I’m worried that it’ll leave my hair matted because no matter how much I use my hands it gets knotted back up or doesn’t feel like I’m getting the shed hair out. Would it be better if I try to be reluctant on using it by using it less?

I would start out by reducing the number of times you pick up a comb or detangling tool. For instance detangle on wash days with a tool and then maybe finger detangle in between wash days. Or detangle on wash days with a tool and then depending on how often you wash your hair reduce the number of times you use use the detangle tool. For example Lets say you you wash your hair every 2 weeks. You wash your hair Monday and detangle with a tool. You re-moisturize your hair every 4 days. So, on that following Thursday use your fingers. And then just switch between tools and fingers.

@@KlassicallyKept THANK YOU! I’ve been doing that for a month as of lately by doing slightly more long term protective styling by installing mini twist for like a month or so then take retwist them by deshedding the hair and detangling with my fingers then using my tangle teezer!

I've been debating about finger detangling. I think this is a sign to try this method with my retention journey. I detangle twice during wash day but I keep combing until all of the tangles are out. Now that I think about it, my hair twine right back together so I could be over manipulating my hair. Ooops! Thxs for bringing us along your journey.
