I’m a black woman with long mid back length natural hair. I get a lot of shrinkage but I started stretching my natural hair since I get a lot of fairy knots and tangles when I let it shrink up. I noticed when I went out with my family with my big natural hair in its stretched state, I got ALOT of stares. I was asked by multiple people if I’m wearing a wig. I also dealt with a waiter at a restaurant grabbing my hair when I went on vacation with my family to Mexico.

The fact that it is not your real hair is the only reason why you would feel some type of way about that question. Most people don’t ask this question anyways, but for us girls that have long thick hair it doesn’t matter if people ask us if it’s our hair or not. Stand tall in your truth. If I am curious about how someone got their hair a certain way I am going to ask the needed questions. Because if it’s her real hair I will know if I need to get clip-in hair or not. Some people are a freak of nature and have double the thickness of this girl in the video. May hair looks just like hers but it’s a little looser in the front and we have the same thickness. Even I like added more hair to make my hair insanely thick. It’s ok for people to ask you that question. Because regardless of what they will still compliment you on how amazing your skills are.

I said no they are extensions and she asked if she could touch it amd normally I wouldn't permit that but, she seemed so sweet so I said yes and she started asking me more questions about it and complimenting it. She seemed so amazed 😂. She actually made my day because that day I wasn't feeling good at all. That same day I had a random guy shout out " I like your hair "😂. This is my experience exactly. People even follow me. They make racist remarks sometimes, or they say it must be so hard doing all of that hair. And I just usually say it's really not as hard as you might think. I feel like this unicorm that people have to stop and stare or find reasons to ask questions to get a closer look. I dislike the unnecessary attention, delays, or overall inconsiderate actions to stop me from my life to gawk at my appearance. Then people who don't understand my concern, get mad when I speak out on it and say I should be grateful I got a compliment. Thank you for the compliment, but my life is not wrapped up in how people perceive me, compliment me, or their opinion. My life does not revolve around beauty, or if I'm pretty enough. That's a trap. I'm not living for likes. I care about my appearance enough to shower, freshen up and be presentable for the days events.

Some of your stories parallel my own, and I will say sometimes it can be shocking (or humorous in other situations) the reactions people have when they see a black woman with long hair. I love your hair and it is beautiful! My hair is passed my shoulders and a White woman who was attending a craft event weekly with me, asked me if my hair was a weave and I laughed and said "No." She didn't believe me until I dragged my hand through it. She said that she didn't think that Black women could grow their long and I told her that she was mistaken. I love my natural hair will not allow anyone else to style my hair, it response to my care solely. My smile cause a stir with people. They love to ask me where I got my teeth done and they ask if I had braces. I've never had braces and I've never had any cosmetic work done on my teeth. I tell them the secret is brushing at least 3 times a day and flossing. I never missed a scheduled dentist appointment. I've had the same dentist for nearly 35 years. My dentist tells everyone that I have the best teeth and use to complain that he'd go broke if he waited for me to need his services. He said this until he started doing my husband and son's teeth. They keep him rolling in dough! It's amazing what people will pick apart. The reason why I take care of my teeth is that my Great-Grandmother use to tell me that she wanted to die with her own teeth. I wasn't aware that people could keep their own teeth for a lifetime. But, you can if you take care of them and she did die with her own beautiful teeth, I hope to do the same and my own hair. Thank you for this wonderful video.

I just want to find out if I’m the only person who fears her hair being cut by a stranger when it’s loose? I know it sounds like an irrational fear but my hair is just above bra strength length, it’s the longest and healthiest I’ve ever seen it after 7 years in this natural journey- keeping in mind I’m South African and we are still new to the idea of growing long natural hair, those people are few and far between like unicorns in our setting. I only blow it out twice a year for trimmings and recently did so and so many people complemented me and it made me feel happy that my effort was paying off. But I also got this irrational fear of people cutting my hair. Especially as it branches from people randomly touching your hair when they are curious instead of asking and it was a thing in my country at some point for people to cut long dreadlocks in the city centres. It’s weird, I know but I just wanted to know is it a fear you ever have and does it go away with time? Thank you for sharing your stories 😊 it really has created a safe space to share

I have had both positive and negative reactions to my hair when loose natural or locked. Currently I am locked. My locks are 7 years old and just to my tailbone. It takes a while for my new growth to lock, so I keep my locks hydrated, moisturized and partially pulled up. Stares mainly from Asian, Hispanic and White women. Their stares tend to be curious or disgust. Some Black women stare also, but it's more admirable/questionable. I live in the US. What I find most interesting is that my friends in the UK have an odd reaction to my hair. Once one of my friends suggested that I might be getting my hair done a little bit longer each time for the appearance of hair growth. My other friend just gave me a blank stare when I mentioned my hair growth.

I had freeformed locks for about 15 years. They grew to be so long and healthy, surprising even me because I didn't really have a model for it. I just got them because I was going to a foreign country and I didn't know how I was going to manage my hair. It was supposed to be a temporary solution but they got better and better. The most memorable moments were when other African people would tell me, 'I didn't know our hair could grow that long.' Well, neither did I. I loved my locs. But I’ve cut them now. I wanted to see if I could apply the kind of freedom I felt with freeformed locs to my natural hair. I defy most natural hair rules. I wash or rinse my hair all the time like I did with my locs. I leave it unstyled, just moisturized. I once picked having locs because I thought that was the only way to live the lifestyle I wanted. I don’t regret it. I learned so much about the potential of my hair, and now I wish I could tell everybody with Afro-textured hair that if long wash days and styling aren’t for you, you can still enjoy your hair. I touch my hair all the time because it’s out all the time (which I found is a big no-no in the natural hair community). Like, it doesn’t have to be that serious to grow and love your hair. All types of personalities can do it their way just like we have different dressing styles. I call my hair my halo; even when I do nothing to it, it just is.

No matter how careful and gentle I am I'd get _smedium_ wads of hair that used to drive me crazy. I'd watch other natural hair videos and they'd have 20 strands of shed hair which made me think I had to be doing something wrong, but what!?🤔 I finally came to the conclusion that my hair is prone to shed a bit more than (100 per day) other people. It's 4Z, mid shoulder, thick/dense/coily/knot prone & will easily _loc._ If I'm not regularly over-combing & style manipulating it daily then I'm going to have a healthy amount of shed hair. I love adding bows and flowers and pins and butterfly clips, especially in the summer, and sometimes I'll do a style and think maybe it looks too silly or whimsical, but those end up being the days I get the most compliments. 😃 I think a lot more people than we realise want to add cute accessories to their hair but are afraid of doing so.

What an informative, real talk video. I did the big chop a couple years ago, during the lockdown and been enjoying the journey of growing my hair natural hair. I firmly believe the reason black women have a hard time accepting our hair and the journey is society. I’ve been in the military where they made actually regulations that made it impossible to wear natural hair. I still work for the government in an office that has mostly older, more white than black & brown people. You know “we “talk. Most of us wear wigs, sew ins, hairpieces slick back ponytails/buns and twists. Look, We want to do good work, not be the subject of questions, touching and curiosity all day and go home. I’ve had conversations where people were looking at my hair instead of me. I know good intentions and bad. Especially, whyte men asking something like, what do I look like without your wig? I said a human fucking being. I told him he has obviously not been told off or knocked unconscious by a black woman and either walk away from my desk, or choose from the aforementioned. He also asked another black woman with braids, “where does her hair “end” or something? I asked him why is he so concerned about black women’s hair?! (Loudly!) your hair is beautiful and you should be proud. I wish we all could be and not be treated like oddities in a freak show.

I am not sure why your content a ppeared in my feed. Yet, i am grateful. Basically all of what you have shared is true. Beauty begins from within. Appreaching your "own" caused your roomate to face her truth in the mirror. That told me your vibe is 100% positive and motivational. Continue striving in whatever you choose to do in life, fir what you pour into the world will return back to you 100 fold. I do agree with you on accessories. It's a language in its self. Accessorues can take a simple jean & t-shirt or a common black & white combination up a knotch & make one stand out. Congratualtions on your university acceptance (you pour out goodness, on faith I am sending it back). Now, on the infornation you shared on learning to care for hair. Not everyone is willing to put in their own work or to become open in learning new things. I so get the lesson on fishing. Once it is with one, it will never leave a person's conscienciousness. In short, I appreciated this conversation.🎉

I have had long loose natural hair and now I have Sisterlocks for years now. People who see me on a regular basis, have seen my hair grow STILL think it’s extensions. I went to a family reunion last month that we have every 2 years. A cousin said oh you have longer extensions now smh. Ok I know some extensions can have gray hair but dude my locs have gray hair sprinkled throughout. Even when my hair was long and relaxed people thought I had weave. Black women can grow long hair!! Oh and I absolutely do not let anyone I don’t know touch my hair. I had a patient’s wife recently wanting to touch my hair. I told her know and do you know she had the nerve to be offended? I told her I do not let people touch my hair period.

Lol, I am relaxed for 25 years and started "growing it about 10 years ago. I seldom wear my hair down but I get all the rude crap. Had one lady ask me where I bought the bundles! These days it is mid back and I wear it in a side plait. I don't get anyone touching it as I am 6ft1 and let's just say I am not the warm and approachable type, my default face is a RBF. Between my height and my hair I do get taken for a drag queen quite often! I have had women in the hair store or at the salon asking me to show them the products I use. It is usually harmless but the belief that we cannot grow hair is so inundated in our minds that it is a little sad.

We are almost hair twins, except mine was mid back length before I cut it. I share the same opinion on hair touching. The topic has lots of nuance. I take is as a compliment when black women are surprised at my long type 4 hair because it feels like I raised the standard for their own hair. Like "yeah it is real, that means you can have it too!" The heart to heart with your roommate was so sweet. Its times like this that we women realize we aren't so different when it comes to how our hair is a part of us

This is such a great story and there’s so many lessons in it. As an African descent young lady, growing up around mostly white women. They made me feel sad for them. They didn’t feel good enough / hot enough unless they were TAN & bleached blonde. I don’t remember how many times I told them there’s nothing wrong with being white and “you’re not pasty” and “you don’t look like a vampire” and “brown or dark hair is beautiful”

The density 😍 I have easy hair 3c/4a low density medium porosity fine hair but it’s hard to grow my hair below my shoulder blades my ends tend to split easily and I’m also a bit lazy with hairmasks 😂 I used to do henna every month but also stopped doing that because of the staining using certain oils and butters would make the henna stain when moist. But no problems when my hair was dry. I don’t mind people touching my hair when it’s dry but of course it’s the polite way to ask before touching of course. I love your hair when I see kinky kids complain to their parents about their hair especially mixed kids I get a little sad cause I only see so much potential and hair styles. I’m a mixed kid too and my mom did not know how to deal with my hair getting into natural products and trying stuff on my skin what also worked for my hair and also experimenting. What works for a lot of other people did not work for me. Like Shea butter should be too greasy for my hair because it’s fine and thin but my curls love it and coconut weighs my hair down and makes it thinner. Please I love women with short hair styles I will compliment them whenever I have a chance! I do like how you take care of your hair and also that you use accessoires I’m also an accesories hoarder my hubby said I could open my own store 😂. I see so many kinky curly sisters on the streets these days it makes me happy cause I never knew there where so many out their with similar hair!
