i love this movie so so much. It really captures christmas to me also the little girl is Sámi! Sámi are indigenous people of northern europe of the area called Sápmi, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Maybe you know "Lapland", that's the old name for it but is not used anymore(!). Sámi are known for semi-nomadic reindeer herding! It's traditionally been a large part of their trades. And the outfits they wear in the movie are traditional clothing called Gákti. Sámi people still experience discrimination, so I found it really beautiful to see the representation in this movie!
@dearvernon11 ай бұрын
Great info! Tho I’m not Sámi, I’ve been trying to read a bit more on Sámi people and the right terms and their rights as a Finnish person. Just a little side note on Lapland for anyone curious! While Lapland (Lappi in Finnish) is not used as a name for their living area (Sápmi) anymore, it is still the actual English translation of the northernmost and largest region (maakunta) in Finland! So if anyone were to google Lapland, it’s just the region of northern Finland, but shouldn’t be used as the name of the area of Sámi people! The Finnish translation for Sápmi would be ”Saamenmaa” I believe :) This was additional info just in case someone were to think Lapland is a word not to be spoken about in any context lmao It’s just the name of the region in Finland Sápmi is partly located!

The girl's name is Margu, and I heard something curious about her voice actress. Margu's voice actress was an authentic Saami girl. I also heard that she knew no english at all and most interactions of Jerper and Margu were based on interactions of the girl and the director who didn't understand each other.

Sami people are actually indigenous to the northern parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and some parts of Russia (called Sapmí). They are the only group of people who own reindeers and they speak different types of sami. The Sami have long been persecuted and subjected to racial biological "research" and now are seen as a minority (atleast in Sweden where i’m from). They were forced to become christian, learn the national languanges and give up their Sami identities. It’s cool to see the Sami being represented on such a main stream platform although i don’t know how accurate it is!
@MillyKKitty11 ай бұрын
Finland too used to do the same things Sweden did, although probably back when it was considered part of Sweden. But nevertheless, doesn't excuse what those people did to the Sami. I am still happy the Sami do exist, and I hope their culture & way of life gets to live on and grow.
@grawxxor282011 ай бұрын
My grandma is Sami, but I am so far removed from the culture and the language that it makes me a bit sad. She speaks both a Sami dialect and Meänkieli, and has a reindeer mark from when her parents herded reindeer.

The animation of this movie is revolutionary in the 2d sphere. Almost everything is hand drawn, and the lighting uses a 3D algorithm that not only allows the light and shadows to look like they do, but allow artists to manipulate frames that are off. People are always surprised that it’s 2d hand drawn, and that’s because of how brilliant the lighting is. Sincerely, an animation student

@MillyKKitty The term "Scandinavian" is used as a synonym to "Nordic countries" in English usage though, and commonly refers to Finland as well. 😊
@MillyKKitty11 ай бұрын
@@swedish_malin There is a lot of debate whether Finland is a Scandinavian country, since besides cultural and historical ties, it also considers linguistic ties part of the definition. The other countries share a Germanic language tree, meanwhile Finland is in the Uralic tree, so I wouldn't consider Finland Scandinavian. The structure of the languages just seem so different to me. But I could see people reading the definition and considering Finland Scandinavian just because Swedish used to be an official first language when Finland was part of Sweden, and Finnish has some loan words from Sweden. I would personally just use Nordic since it refers generally to Northern European countries (And its Finnish translation is literally Northern countries), meanwhile Scandinavia just refers to countries with afromentioned ties.

The Sami are an indigenous group spread out in Norway, Sweden, Finland and some parts of Russia. They are their own branch genetically and culturally, so they're not infact inuits nor are the modern day Finns the descendants of their ancestors. The Sami are closely related to Northeastern Europeans and Western indigenous groups of Siberia like the Komi. They only share 25% Neo-Siberian ancestry with the Eskimo-Aleut groups, so their ancestry with inuits is indirect at best. Finnish people on the other hand are derived from 2 ancestory tribes, who arrived from the south and east, and as they spread around the south coast, they pushed the ancestors of the Sami away from the South, to eventually to the Northest part of Finland. I believe the same might have happened in the other countries I mentioned above (Far before any of these countries really existed). The Sami, however, would later on be subjected to cultural cleansing under Christian values around 1600+. A lot of them had to give up their culture, language and beliefs, and they'd learn the language the country used in the bible. They were also probably used for twisted experiments in some parts, but I need to read up on that part.

The Sami are the sami tribes and their language is saami. They are spread around northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. And I would like to correct that Finnish people did not come from the Sami group. The earlier form of the Sami tribe used to recide closer to the south, but was eventually pushed to move north due to the arrival of other tribes from the south and east, which would later on become the modern day Finns, some of which would have some Sami blood within them one way or another. "The Sami are most closely related to other Northeastern Europeans and Western Siberian indigenous groups such as the Komi. They are not directly related to the Inuit. But through their c. 25% Neo-Siberian ancestry, which was also transmitted into the Eskimo-Aleut groups, they share indirect ancestry with each other." So the Sami are definitely their own branch, not Finns nor Inuits.
