I have so many fond memories of that place as a kid. Joe Brown’s is the only tenant that has been there since the very beginning. In the basement of the Newberry’s (Dollar Tree) there used to be a pet shop that was selling a live monkey they had in the window. So in its heyday you could literally buy a monkey at that mall.

This place was the place back in the 90's I still remember the radio and tv commercials, " biggest mall in Oregon". It's so crazy to see it in the state it is now. It just makes me sad. So sad.... My Father worked for Drake construction when they built this mall in the 60's and then he worked there as head engineer until he retired. I spent many days ice skating and then going down in the maintenance room to meet him after work. This was my childhood memory that's soon to be gone. Still have the photos of the construction of this mall.

That is exactly the problem. Smart People found safer places to do their shopping. I can't blame them. I also avoid dangerous places like in town Portland. I completely disagree with the phone point, but that aside I feel like the pandemic really was the nail in the coffin for a lot of shopping centers. I went to Lloyd very frequently in 2018/19 and it was always packed, lines out of the stores. That and Clackamas were probably the biggest malls in that area of the city. During the pandemic nobody felt safe at malls and everyone saw a huge increase in online shopping, sales went up by millions. After that everyone kind of chose Clackamas as ''the mall" and nobody I knew would've chosen Lloyd over it.

I’m a native Portlander and I’m so sad that their going to demolish Lloyd Center. It is an iconic mall and was always hoppin back in the day. I grew up going to Lloyd Center and it was open air and Christmas time was the best. Always the smell of Carmel Corn all over the mall. My family moved to Portland in 1962 when I was 10. Lloyd Center was THEE place to shop. We were amazed at the large mall concept which was new. I used to ice skate there from time to time. I left in 1975 when I joined the Air Force and haven’t been back there to live but came back several times to visit family. It is so sad to see what has happened to Portland with lost businesses, homeless encampments, high crime, etc. It just breaks my heart! I sincerely hope they can bring it back.

We are living history. These malls were the place to be in the 90s. Most of them now are gasping their final breath. Cant really say it was online sales and amazon that crushed it. It is a combination of things. Maybe its something in us that changed. Having less stuff is now trending . 2020 did a number on alot of small businesses and wrecked the ones barely holding on prior

I went there in the early 1960s when it was new. As you said, the skating rink was open to the outside air, but there was a roof to protect from rain. The Portland government thinks they're being humanitarians by letting homeless people take over our streets.. what they're really doing is having school children watch homeless people shoot up every day and making our city look like a dump. Only a matter of time before the government here starts supporting criminals too. We definitely need new leadership.

Never heard of it. 7:10 I think was a Starbucks, formerly a high end knife and cutlery joint. (Camelot?) 7:48 Orange Julius and Van Duyn chocolates. 8:12 a toy store with science toys, kits, models, etc. 8:23 Red Wing Shoes. 8:50 mall customer service. 9:03 Macy's 3 floors.9:17 don't know DEB but formerly a record and CD store. 9:24 optical to the left and Nordstrom on the back wall (3 floors) 9:54 theaters at the back, TILT arcade next to it. Food court had changes over the years. There was a great Indian place, Let's Talk Turkey, taco hell or taco slime, mcdees, a good Italian fast food place, teriyaki, Chinese, many others. 11:53 they cut the ice skating rink in half in the disastrous bankrupting remodel they did a few years ago, the death knell of Lloyd Center. 12:35 if you hang out there for a little while you will still see a few birds. 12:09 as-seen-on-tv store. 14:03 every vendor that wasn't a corporate whore store would vie for your attention with tasty samples. 14:48 if you didn't want to deal with the lines and pissy public restrooms in the food court you coukd go down that hall to the one near the professional offices.15:04 Orange Julius moved to the food court from the lower level. 15:58 that ice rink is 1/3 the size of the old one. There was a nice candy store behind it. 16:50 I think that was the luggage store. 17:48 one of those was RadioShack. 17:54 all those theft detectors wow. 18:15 Kay Jewelers, no way was Jamba Juice that big it was just the kiosk. 19:15 there were so many clothing and shoe stores. 20:04 Super Cuts. 21:18 Suncoast was cool. There was a Eddie Bauer to the left of that after the KB Toys. 21:58 the other side of Marshalls was Sears before that it was JCPenney's. 22:05 there was the upper entrance for Stanford's restaurant there. So that is gone too.

I'm so sad about malls being gone but to be honest I rarely spent money in them because everything was too expensive. I used to love going to the mall. But it really changed when the arcade, bookstore, the sword shop and all of the good places shut down It just was never the same. Once Mrs Fields cookies was gone all the malls started to decline.

I remember when The Lloyd Center was safe and fun. One child did John Whatever-it-Was for acting on the top floor. We all ice skated; once, dropped a stuffed animal from a top floor and had to frantically rescue my child's 'friend' amidst a crowd of other kind and happy shoppers. All this near 16 years ago. In the meantime violence crept in. Then the pandemic and racial unrest coupled with a strong antifa following... RIP PDX

The middle of the mall is still strong --- Barnes and Noble, Forever 21, Ross and the ice rink. Its the wings that are dying except for Ulta. The downfall of the Lloyd Center wasn't just online shopping and the pandemic, but also the expensive renovation they did about 5 years ago that made them have to raise the rents. It was a bad idea. I know the person who was hired to redesign it. Beautiful job, but made the rents too high for many of the stores to stay.

@Finessnu2 Washington and she owned them 20 years. But our insurance was so high due to criminal activity and our theft was about a third of our product. The last 5 years we were open were the worst, we closed two years ago. And it's a shame we paid our employees about 5 over min. So that's 25 or so jobs gone. And we no longer spend any money in that community.

My most recent visit to that mall (which is not my local mall) was with my dad back on the 3rd of this month (4 days after the mall reopened after the electrical fire early of last month). On the top floor of the old Marshalls, I noticed that some people inside (including a child) with some clothes inside. And also, it is pretty interesting that there was a DMV there. Apparently, the office has been closed for nearly a decade. Despite me living in Portland my whole life, my first time going to that mall was around the beginning of 2013 (which I was 9 around that time, though I turned 10 in 2013). I even remember that there was a movie theater (despite there already being a movie theater right outside the mall) and a video arcade right by the food court. (Apologies for the long comment.)

As a kid in the 60's, my Dad would load us up in the station wagon in Hillsboro and we'd drive into Portland to LC for some Christmas fun. We'd walk the entire mall and enjoy the music, decorations and the skaters and always got a box of caramel corn for the ride home. In 1981, I rented an apartment, 3 blocks away from there and used to go watch kids playing organized hockey at the rink(it was a full size rink back then.) At night, my roommate and I, would skateboard through the parking garage. Across Broadway there was an Engine House Pizza parlor where we ate a lot of pizza and played video games. Those were the days! I think the main reason no one wants to hand out at LC anymore is because Portland is a mess. Crime and homeless all over that town and nobody wants to drive into town and have their car messed with. Also, Washington Square mall and Clackamas Town Center are still viable choices if you like shopping malls, although Sears is gone, which sucks.

Lloyd center has been going down hill for a very long time. The begining of the end started when the started to lose all their anchor stores like JC penny then Meier and Frank sold out to some other company and Sears left and then Nordstrom. I was the manager of the Excalibur Cutlery store in Lloyd Center (for ten years) but when Washington Sq. forced us out by selling our spot to some one else and not letting us use a different spot we closed that store and then had to declare bankruptcy since the Washington Sq. store was our A store, but even before that Lloyd mall was going down hill. It's very sad I can remember when I was a kid Lloyd mall was great with all kinds of toy stores and department stores. That end of the mall you showed at first was mostly clothing stores and shoe stores (and a pet store and a couple of board game stores).

He called me after it was all clear, his voice shaking and everyone was really shaken up. We used to go ice skating there and had a blast. This was 37 years ago when it was open air and cold. So much fun skating with the sky above especially when it was snowing. This is where Tonya Harding grew up ice skating. Man I used to skate here so often as a kid. Usually every Friday night, and during summers I joined the rink-ran day camp. They gave us two 90 minutes ice sessions each day and on Fridays I would go back for another 2-3 hours later in the evening, paying extra to join a public skate. I played ice hockey as a kid up until high school and a good portion of my footwork and agility on the ice I can attribute to my time spent at Lloyd Center. I will definitely miss it as well as the ability for the public to be exposed to ice sports near the heart of the city
