Awesome video as usual. I wish I had these tutorial videos years ago when I was learning the home theater setup techniques. It seems boring to some, but it’s always good to refresh our knowledge. Also, it gives me an accurate informational tool to share with guys that are new to our hobby. One question, I see that the receiver/processor volume affects your spl meter levels; what volume do you use when you are running the audyssey setup? Thanks for sharing.
@Youthman

Me too! I had to learn the hard way lol. My understanding is when you run Audyssey, you don’t have to adjust your volume. Just let it do its thing. 😀

Thank you so much for this video! I just purchased at RadioShack analog meter on eBay. I'm a bit confused that where you leave the master volume before adjusting the individual speakers? My Denon 3400 either has a volume scale from 0 to 98 or -79.5 to 18 DB. Any thoughts on where to start? Thanks in advance!

I have never agreed with ' MY ' Audyssey XT32's E.Q. settings ; ...always seems TOO 'dull' on-the-high-end, in my world ! * I hope your loving the RF-7 iii's with the Mammoth RC-64iii, my friend. I'm really loving your videos. My question is, when you are using the dB meter to measure surround channels where are you and where do you point the meter?
@Youthman

I always measure from my listening position which is the front right seat and point the mic straight up towards the ceiling for all speakers. That’s just my preference. Some are directly at each speaker.

@Youthman

I get that question a lot the short answer is no I’m guessing because the subs are sealed which is why I wanted to review the SB-16 instead of the PB-16. Here’s a video I made kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWvqGyXZsqsbNU

I am on my third AVR by Arcam. Very musical, but expensive. Great Speakers make this AVR shine. I have had an old Klipsch system for decades and it is time to move up to something far more performing. Though I agree with your choice on the RF7 III for my Great Room/Living Room they are very large! Looking at other makes and doing demos in home. Getting the SVS Ultra Floor, Klipsch RP280F a pair of Emotiva T2 to start out with. Klipsch is so hard to beat though....

Youthman, I love watching your videos as they are very informative and I too just started to get into Home Theater. A silly question and please excuse me if you already mentioned but do you turn up your receiver volume to measure with the spl meter? I did mine can't seem to hit over 65 db for any of my speakers. Any suggestion?
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you I’m glad the channel is helping you build your home theater. My understanding is you do not have to set the volume as your room correction software will do that regardless of where you set the volume before you start the calibration process. If it registers at 65 DB, that’s fine just make sure after calibration all of your speakers are the same level

Hi great video for setting up with Audyssey. My question is the volume for your AVR is set, to have 75 or 80 dB so that all channels will be the same.
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure I understand the question you are asking. Before calibration, you don’t have to worry about where your volume is on the receiver. Audyssey will take care of that.

Youthman thanks sorry for my question before so after Audyssey is done I just make sure that all my speakers are at 75dB with the pink noise.
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
I would just make sure they are all the same level. So let’s say Audyssey finishes calibrating and you go back into the Levels and as you cycle through the pink noise, you notice a few are not all the same dB, just adjust them to make the.m equal

Hey there Youthman.... My Marantz sr6011 puts my RP-280Fs at FULL RANGE and my Velodyne at 80Hz.... Same Audyssey you have....Interesting... Must be room tuning?? Again, for all those about to set or get a DB meter, place it nearest your listening position at 90 DEGREES and don't move once set, ALWAYS DB-A weighting when you want to measure what your ear is hearing, C weighting when you are measuring equipment. Another good point is setting the meter at FAST response so you can catch the peaks quickly... Enjoy (O:

Hey Mr. Youthman, As always, a great video. I am writing to get your help with something. For my home, I am planning to get RF7iii for front, RP504C for center and R115S for woofer. I am not certain what to get for the back. The sales guy at the store suggested RP8060's for the back. I was not sure hence turning to you for help. Will much appreciate if you could suggest. Thanks in advance. Sukesh
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sukesh. The first thing I would recommend is getting the matching RC64 III. The RP-504C has a a Smaller and completely different tweeter so it has a different sound signature than the RC-64 III. For surrounds, there are lots of ways to go. I have wide dispersion RS-62 II in my theater room. The RP-502S would work well with the RF7 III. Book shelf or even floor standing speakers also would work great. If you do decide on the 8060FA, what are you going to use for front Atmos speakers?

Ok I understand The question now. After you have the microphone placed in each seating position and odyssey finishes it asks you to unplug the mic. You can put the mycocide as you will no longer need it. That’s when I sat down in my primary listening position with the DB meter and went into the Onkyo menu and went to speaker levels. It will generate the white noise For you to check the level with your DB meter. Does that make better sense?

Hi youthman I have a question. Today i got my spl meter analog . I have Yamaha receiver on my receiver i can not set crossover for each speaker. I have option to set 1 crossover. when I use spl meter how much volume i need to keep in the receiver. I usually listen -30 my receiver goes up to +15 which is High...This is where I am struck...
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
Congrats! It will be a great tool to help you calibrate your system. THX recommends 80Hz crossover so that’s a good starting point. Some like theirs a little lower if their front speakers are large. Did you run YPAO?
@sanjeevmail
@sanjeevmail 6 жыл бұрын
Youthman :In your video YMPO is the first setup. But i did not like YMPO settings. YMPO blows my ears. So I always do manual.. In that case how much volume i need to keep?
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
Try this, Set your volume low and then go into the menu and choose Speaker Level and see how loud your dB meter reads. Then exit and turn your receiver up to a much louder volume, then go back into the menu and choose Speaker Levels and see if the dab meter reads any louder. My understanding is the test times will always be a certain volume regardless of where you have your volume knob set at. Let me know if this is accurate.

If the center channel is for voice only, how come it still plays a tone to measure the quality? I kind of find it annoying since I have to raise the volume for all speakers or manually guess what is good enough for the center channel.

The center channel play much more than just voices. It is estimated the Center plays roughly 80% of everything you see on screen. An SPL meter is a great tool to help you balance your speakers. I linked a few in the description of the video.

Youthman Wouldn't it better not to have a center channel and go with 2.1? If I already have left and right surround sound speakers, what benefit would the left and tower speakers give me versus a center channel? I have a 5.2. home theater, but my desktop 2.0 I feel does a better job playing all front audio no matter the distance.

I’m not a fan of having a “phantom” Center. This is where you do not use a dedicated center and your receiver routes the center channel content to your front main speakers. The whole purpose of a home theater is to separate the sounds to make a more immersive experience.

What about AURO 3D what do you think about that ? Can you give your input

I am pretty new to immersive formats. I am looking into upgrading to ATMOS as it seems to have the most support

For this speaker setting, do you set your speakers to Large or Small????
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 жыл бұрын
I always set my speakers to small and let my subs handle the low end. This helps take some of the load off of your receiver and allows the mains to play cleaner.

What's a good decibal meter because these decibal meter apps are really inaccurate.

Yeah, I have a few apps and they aren't typically too reliable. I linked two on Amazon in the description of the video that had great reviews. I have an Analog Radio Shack Meter.

Where is the volume on the sub? 50%? I always wonder how to two volumes interact with each other.

Every sub is different but Audyssey will tell you where the gains should be. Usually between 1/2 and 3/4

Why is there such a price disparity between the RP 7 III and say the Forte III. Granted the Forte has the passive radiator but at 2x the price?
@Youthman

I’m not sure Mike. My ears preferred the RF7 II. I sold the Forte III and have upgraded the RF7 II to the RF7 III and could not be happier for my setup.

Shouldn't the levels be set to 75db on every speaker?, you just match whatever db you measured from the front left (in this case 78db) and made each other speaker have the same db? The level test tone is played in most cases at -30db, so you set your receiver to 0db volume, play the tone level, make each speaker (including the subs) to be playing the pink noise at 75db. As i read the subs should be set 75db too because the test tone for the subs is played at -40db. This setup will give you reference standard levels, or in other words, you should get if volume on receiver at 0db, max SPL for the speakers at listening position 105db, and max SPL for the subs at 115db. Plus setting the subs 10db over, means they will play 2x more loudly (because 10db is 2x loudness difference ) than the standard making it sound "boomy" ? I've read and watched a lot about audyssey and home theater calibration, and when i setup my system as i described above with a shy single svs pb-1000, never lacked any bass on any movie, sometimes it even sounds that the bass is a little too much.

Have always been interested in what the XT32 calibration process looks like. Could have done with speeding through some of the measurement process, though. I don't think we need to sit through 2 minutes of "bwap bwap bwap bwap bwap bwap". :P Great video otherwise. Thanks for your content.

I did speed it up. I spared you with 7 other seating positions. I wanted to show in real time what one full seating position looked like. Basically to show that the entire calibration is going to take you around 30 min.
