In this Klipsch Flagship RF-7, RF-7 II, RF-7 III Flagship Reference Speaker Review and Comparison, I discuss the differences I heard between the three speakers during an audio get together that I hosted in my home where we compared side by side, the Klipsch RF-7, RF-7 II and RF-7 III Speakers. I believe the Klipsch RF-7 III are Klipsch's greatest Reference Speaker to date.

Youthman Just an update I wanted to share with you . I finally decided on ordering my RF-7 III for my wife's system mainly based on all of your videos . It wasn't one video in particular . I was really on the fence between the RF-7 II and the RF-7 III . After seeing all of your videos it was a no brainer . You are a real professional and I hope you continue to make these videos . Thank you

I have owned Forte II and reviewed the Forte III. To my ears, the only area the Forte sounded better than the RF7 III is in midrange. The Forte II and III are great speakers, just not the best for for my setup.

I absolutely love my original RF7's. Initially powered by a 100W/ch Yamaha receiver with pre-outs. I added RS7's RC7's and an RSW-15 eventually, and transitioned into separates (Rotel/Marantz/Oppo). Later purchased an SVS PB/12-Plus/2 for even more low range thump--the RSW-15 is a fairly musical sub. Specifically for the RF7's, they are less forgiving with regards source material and amplification. They were overly bright with my Yamaha head unit. Currently paired with a Rotel RB1090 for RF7s and 1095 for all other channels, they sound great and just handle the power. Also, completely agree, the first watt is critical with the original RF7's.

I wish I could crank out videos quicker for you guys but I have a full time job, a home business, a family of 6 and a lot of my videos like this one took me up to 6 hrs to film, edit, export and upload. I have some really exciting videos in the works. I'm actually more of a Home Theater guy but I enjoy having a quality 2ch setup. I have not done much research into HD Audio. I do like the flexibility of streaming media to my system as I'm often developing websites in my home office and like to be able to crank the Klipsch remotely while I work. One friend recommended I check out the Oppo Sonica. Not sure I'll ever get into vinyl but who knows. Thanks for watching!

In 1990 I knew the Manager @ United Audio in Vernon Hills, IL. He closed the door to a set of Klipshorns set up perfectly in the corners. Hooked up to a Byrson Power amp and I think a Holman pre-amp running 100wrms/ch clean. WOW. I plan of getting a set of the New 7-III. I am building now 2 vented 6cuft 18" subs with 1000 wrms mono sub amps from Parts Express. Thankyou. I built a set of 3-way Speakerlab 15" 3-way slot ported with imitation Klipshorn insides.

Love the comparison, and all your explaining what was done, and how. 48 hours ago, I bought a pair of RF7's, gen 1. As you said, they sound better the more you turn them up. The brightness is the only issue, as I'm used to cerwin Vega DX-7'S, and CV-120's, with their lack of high end detail made the transition to the RF7'S more dramatic. Is there a cost effective way to tame the brightness? I'm going to try using a high end Onkyo EQ 35 equalizer, with all it's features and adjustments, and see if we can mellow things a tad. PS: my listening area is not optimal. Thank you for any input, and have a safe and content holiday season!

I just got to watch this .. thanks Youthman! Sounds like you all had a good time, isn't audio great? I was glad to hear that your listening evaluations were consistent with the changes Klipsch made with the speaker. You and your friends heard a better top end, and of course the new top end driver, one of the big changes in this speaker, is most likely the reason for a better performing top end. As well, the better balanced sound you all heard over the entire spectrum is directly related to the new cabinet the speaker now has. The speaker may look the same on the outside, but inside changes were made, big changes, and I suspect this is responsible for the better balance you experienced. Klipsch does not develop revolutionary new products, they offer new evolutionary products that build on the solid foundation they already have, to actually produce sonic improvements and not just perpetuate hype. Thanks again and I am looking forward to your further evaluations.

@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joel. The hard part about comparing them to my LaScalas is the LaScalas would be in a completely different location (up on a riser behind an Acoustic Transparent Screen" and the RF-7 III would need to be in front of the cabinet in my theater room. Not sure how well that would go. I would need to move the LaScalas into the living room and honestly, those 120lb beasts are not fun to move and are a pain to get to the speaker terminals. I have compared the RF-83 with the LaScalas. The LaScalas cannot compare to the slam of the RF-83's but the bass it does produce is super clean and smooth. The midrange and top end go hands down to the LaScalas. I believe the RF-7 III would do better than the RF-83 since the RF-83 were very laid back sounding, but still, the LaScalas are just in a different league altogether than the Flagship Reference Speakers. Thanks for watching!
@elmexs76

Hi awesome review! So what you are saying is that La Scala’s are in a league of their own... meaning that they are way better than the RF-7’s no matter which version? I am a big fan of Klipsch and currently own RF-82s and 6 RB 81s, 2 RS-52s, and a RC-62 for my home theater. I have been looking for RF-7s to replace my front stage. What are your thoughts? Save up for La Scala’s? I have plenty of application with Emotiva XPA-2 gen 2, XPA-5 gen 2, and XPA-4 gen 3 with the XMC and LG OLED C7.

@Youthman
@Youthman 2 жыл бұрын
If you aren’t hearing the highs from your horns, it sounds like the metal jumpers on the rear speaker binding posts has been removed. The tip red and black speaker terminals are for your tweeter, the bottom red and black terminal is for the dual 10” woofers. If you do not have a metal jumper connecting the two, you will not get sound from both the tweeter and woofers.

It really depends on what your ears prefer. The original sevens were quite bright on the top end. You’re not going to hear much difference in the mid range or the low frequencies. The RF7 III have a much smoother, more refined top end than the RF7’s. Hope that helps

May I ask your location? Trying to find Klipsch friends that enjoy Klipsch like I do and I am always looking to learn. I do have a question for you or anyone who reads this. I have a pair of the RF-7's series I. I've heard people complain about their harsh sound and I actually like the sound. I've seen a video of people applying a sticky rubber on the back of the horns. But I've also been told that I could upgrade the crossovers. Can the original 1st series get a crossover upgrade and what will the upgrade give me? My complaint of the RF-7's is that they don't have any bass in my opinion but I've been told that I am wrong. I am limited on where I can place them though. I do have big subs with 18" drivers so I guess in a way I don't care that my RF-7 speakers don't produce much bass but they are really big speakers for a speaker that don't produce bass. I never knew until I saw your pictures that the RF-7's are shorter than the II and III's. I actually prefer the shorter model only because the taller ones would block my TV screen. I paid $800 for the pair and that was roughly 7 years ago. It seemed like a good deal back then but I drove over 7 hours each way to get them. Also curious as to what people are using to drive them with? I'm using an Adcom GFA-555 amp. It's the only good Adcom amp in my opinion, designed by Nelson Pass. I've used a Crown which was terrible and an Emotiva which was terrible. There are a lot of mods available for my particular Adcom amp and I'm also interested in upgrades for the RF-7's as well. Just trying to get the best sound out of my particular setup. I went from Definitive Technology Mythos Ones to the Klipsch RF-7. The DefTechs had more clarity but the Klipsch has more sound.

Hi Uwe! Greetings from the sunny state of Florida in the US. As I shared in the video, I feel the RF-7 III have a more balanced sound than the RF-7 II and RF-7 but IMO, the RF-7 II still sound amazing. I didn't hear any difference in the bass response between the three but the midrange was slightly different and the highs were definitely different. I'm guessing RF-7 III would cost much more to send them to Germany than what we can buy them for in the US so depending on how much extra income you have, it might not be worth the added expense. If you have money just a flowing, yes, I would indeed recommend upgrading to the RF-7 III. Thanks for watching!

What sounds better the RP-8060FA or the Reference Premiere III? Does an Atmos speaker need to be a special type of Speaker or is it just the receiver that is Atmos?
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, I think you meant to say the RF7 III. Klipsch doesn't make a Reference Premiere III. ;) Although I'm very impressed with the RP-8060FA, the RF7 III is a much better speaker due to the larger woofers for that killer slam and the much larger 1.75" compression driver for the top end. For the most part, I believe you can use just about any direct radiating speaker for Atmos. My In-Ceiling are standard in-ceiling speakers, nothing "Atmos" about them. The receiver will typically set higher crossovers for Atmos speakers. Dolby just recommends that you NOT use wide dispersion or bi-pole type speakers as your Atmos speakers.

Hey Youthman, have you ever compared the Klipsch with any of B&W's top speakers?
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 жыл бұрын
I have owned B&W DM 604 S2 and B&W DM604 S3 and compares them to a few Klipsch models. The B&W sounded a bit more laid back on the top end and had nice, smooth bottom end at low to mid volume but when you really crank it, they sounded strained. Klipsch speakers typically sound better the louder you drive them. The DM Series isn’t their top end by any means but it’s what I had to compare. I have recently reached out to B&W to review their 700 Series but have not received a reply

Thinking of replacing the my existing Yamaha integrated amp with a Parasound Halo Integrated amp Hint 6. If I can stretch my budget then I want go for a Halo A21 Power amp + Halo P6 Pre-amp . Then again, since the speakers are very efficient (102 dB), I was wondering if I still need a power amp with 225 watts/ ch to run these speakers. What Klipsch Center & Sub speakers would you recommend in conjunction with my KLF30. I don't have a very big living room though.
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, the KLF30 are certainly great and very powerful speakers with the dual 12” woofers. I had a pair several years ago. The matching Center is the KLF-C7. As for subs, you can go with any Brand as they don’t have to be voice matched. I personally like 15” subs in my theater room. What is your budget for a sub?
@wasimzakariah2021

Youthman: thanks for your reply. Do you think if I power my pair of KLF 30 (200wts/ch) speakers with Parasound Halo power amp A23 (125 wts/ch) instead of power amp A21 (250 wts/ch) would that degrade any sound quality? My room is not big, speakers are very powerful and the room has no acoustic panels on the wall.

The KLF30 should be fine with 125wpc, as they have 102dB sensitivity

Hey buddy. I know everyone’s a know it all. I just figured out something I thought I’d share. It’s an adcom speaker selector. It’s got some decent guts and it’s abc selectable or any two at once maintaining impedence. According to everything I’ve read it doesn’t take anything away from the sound. Safe cheap way to abc select. I paid 20$ for mine. And adcom is a decent brand. Great vid.

Carl Cameron though the klipsch floor speakers are big they can't make the very well the klipsch needs to be bigger to make the big sounds fully and since the klipsch speakers are big the klipsch can't make the small sounds very well only small speakers can make small sounds very well

Pat, I appreciate your thoguhts but am a bit confused at your logic. I can assure you, my LaScalas are very detailed even at low volume. Good speakers are capable of reproducing "small sounds" and "big sounds". I can put you in front of a pair of Klipsch RB-75 bookshelf speakers and when paired with a sub, it will rock your face off. It's basically a mini RF-7. Absolutely fantastic speaker with huge sound, even though it's a bookshelf speaker.

I really was hoping for a well made recording to get a "taste" of these speakers myself. Yes, I know everyone's computer sound system is different, but owning a set of RF7s myself, I would be able to discern some differences between the different versions. I'm using stock crossovers and have no complaint with them or the RC7 as I mainly watch movies and TV shows, and I power them with a Sunfire 400-7 amplifier and Denon AVR-3313CI receiver. I don't have, nor can I afford a sub. But with these speakers a foot out of each corner, I get very deep bass that you can feel right through you. Even friends always comment how they can "feel" the bass so strongly, even with all settings flat. Thanks for the video, and I subscribed. But would still love to hear some of this for myself, even if it is a YT video.

Don't worry Robert, that is the next video I will be working on. That was one of the main things I wanted to be able to show on my channel like I did with the RF-7 II vs Forte III Video so that you can visually and audibly hear the difference when switching between speakers. Today I will be borrowing a Zoom H4N so hopefully I can get a better recording with audio demos than what I have been able to capture with my Rode Video Mic Pro which isn't ideal for audio reviews since it's a mono mic as well as a shotgun mic. Thanks for watching and subscribing! I have lots of other Klipsch videos on my channel that you may enjoy.

I had the Forte III for about a month and they weren't what I was looking for in a speaker. I much preferred the sound of my RF-7 II. I have a few videos of the Forte III on my channel. 200 watts of clean power will rock the RF-7 III. You definitely don't "need" more power. Keep this in mind, it takes twice the power to get a 3db gain in volume. So if you have a 200 watt amp, if you added a 300 watt amp, you would gain 3db in volume from the speakers.

The RF's are capable of a MASSIVE soundstage, while the RP's are more limited in the mid range, slightly tinny, and have drastically less low end capability. Oh I know about the process but to me, the journey is just as much fun as the end result. I pieced my systems together over time as funds became available and the right deal came along. i regret selling my 30's. i had them connected to the monster power 2250 power amp. oh gosh... what a difference that amp made. they sounded good connected a yamaha receiver, but when i hooked them up to that power amplifier it changed everything. they just came alive!

Yes, a lot of the larger Klipsch speakers are that way. They sound great...but give them some power and they really begin to sing. The LaScalas don't really do that though because they don't have a lot of bottom end. I ended up selling my Sherbourn 200 x 7 amp as I no longer heard a difference between a high end receiver and a receiver + amp due to their extremely high sensitivity.
@chrislowe357
@chrislowe357 5 жыл бұрын
i was once told LA SCALAS are for row 30. the bottom end you have to be far away from to really feel it. its not meant to be played in a house. the belles are for closer audiences. the k-horn i know nothing about. i went with the CORNWALL 3 speakers for my new system because they actually do sound amazing in a regular house. i grew up with a pair of cornwall 2's being pushed by a NIKKO HIFI 200wpc stereo receiver. i had a pair of la scalas in the past. honestly... i didn't like them. too bright. as for the power amp... honestly, i don't think there's any other way to push a high end klipsch speaker. yeah... an IPOD could produce sound out of a CORNWALL 3, but LOL... NAH, you need power! while i do consider myself an audiophile others might claim i'm a wannabe. the thing is... technology has gotten so good that i believe the ultra high end processors / amplifiers / receivers have become almost irrelevant these days. in my honest opinion the weak link in the chain today is the actual "source" material. with regard to speakers i believe speaker placement actually means more than the actual speaker itself. i plan to push my heritage klipsch (cornwall 3 and heresy 3 center and surrounds) with a ROTEL RMB 1095 power amplifer and the YAMAHA AVENTAGE 2070 as a processor.

My LaScalas sound amazing from row...um....1. LOL. They very well may sound even better being further back but they are by far better than any speaker I have ever owned. They definitely don't have a lot of bottom end in my room. Maybe being further back would help with that as I know they were originally used for auditoriums, churches etc. They definitely were not designed for Home Theater as they only play down to around 70Hz effectively (going from memory). My ears have always preferred a brighter, more detailed sound so the LaScalas are absolutely incredible to my ears. I'm no audiophile but in my setup, I do not feel I have lost anything by powering the LaScala Trio with my Marantz SR8012 vs with the Parasound Halo A52+ due to their extremely high efficiency.

Therefore the more talking you do about the speakers and the more information you give the better . So , don’t listen to any of the negativity and keep up the good work . Ty

Hi Allen, give Cory a call (see the link in the description of the video) to see if he can still get RF-7 II and to see what he can get the RF-7 III for. His pricing is better than anywhere else I've found. You are correct, it's difficult to reproduce on a highly compressed KZbin Video just what my ears are hearing but this weekend, I want to record an audio comparison between the RF-7, RF-7 II and RF-7 III. I certainly appreciate the kind words and support. I realize my videos will not appeal to everyone but they seem to be enjoyed by many so that's all that matters to me.

Nothing wrong with that. That's actually the next video I'm preparing to make. I'm borrowing a Zoom H4N tomorrow to see if I can't capture the audio better than my Rode Video Mic Pro that I use for my videos. Unfortunately the Rode is mono (which I didn't know) so it isn't the best for audio demos. Thanks for watching and thanks for your input.

Well that was a bunch of nothing! I listen to normal music in a normal home with everything from McIntosh c47 / mc75 to a vintage Samsun au717 and my rf7s sound great! So I still don’t know what to think. My personal opinion is that the 2s are ugly with the grills not going all the way but the 3s are better looking. I do like the floating looking grills on the original version. And now my question your mod to your speakers, is that good? Let’s remember we all listen in digital!

Hi Fran, thanks for your comments. I have a friend that loves his RF7 with his McIntosh gear and has never felt they sounded harsh even at high volume. With my setup and in my living room, the RF7 were a bit harsh and ear fatiguing at high volume. Everyone has different taste when it comes to appearance which is why each have their own unique style. The mod that I had on my RF7 II takes too much of the highs for my taste. I now have them back to stock.

Don't worry Stevie, that video is in the works. Tomorrow I'm borrowing the Zoom H4N audio recorder since my Rode Video Mic Pro isn't ideal for audio recording. I have 2 or 3 videos on my channel where I recorded audio and honestly, it doesn't sound good because the Rode Video Mic Pro is mono (didn't know that), not to mention it's a shotgun mic. It was never designed for audio recording. The next video I'm working on will be an audio comparison between the RF-7, RF-7 II and RF-7 III like I did in this video where I switched back and forth during the song to each speaker - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHTci313fLijZ5Y. So what’s going on with you? Is Klipsch paying you? Are they loaning the speakers to you?
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck, Mike is correct. As I mentioned in the video, Klipsch is not paying or providing me with any perks or benefits (although I wouldn't be opposed if they want to lol). I have LOVED the sound of Klipsch for many years and have owned a TON of Klipsch speakers. I reached out to Klipsch back in November stating that I had the RF-7 and RF-7 II and a lot of guys were asking how the RF-7 III compare to the RF-7 or how they compare to the RF-7 II. I shared with Klipsch that since I had both the RF-7 and RF-7 II, it would be great to compare them side by side with each other (both visually and audibly) to provide input on how they compare. Klipsch replied to me stating they would love to have me asses the RF-7 III but would not be able to send them until the first of the year after they had sent them to the major media publications first. Klipsch has not made any requests, suggestions for videos. They simply sent them to me to review and share my thoughts and literally said, "have fun". And that's exactly what I've been doing. If they were crap, I would have no problem saying they were. LOL. We had a great meetup this Saturday and it was a pleasure meeting Mike and a few other audio guys from the various Audio Facebook Groups.

I love my RF-7 II as well. I've paired them next to Heresy III, Forte III, Chorus II, Forte II and everytime, I preferred my RF-7 II. If you feel the RF-7 II are a bit harsh at times, you could always contact Deang to have him modify them. He did mine and it smooths out the top end. Klipsch is going to be sending me the RP-280 in March, I have considered buying stock crossovers and selling my Deang since I don't want to have to swap crossovers every time I'm reviewing and comparing Klipsch speakers. I'm probably going to just sell them for whatever it costs to buy new stock crossovers.
