I've owned a 2003 since new. I bought it because at the time, and maybe still now, there were more people doing round-the-world rides on the KLR than any other bike. I've ridden across Canada twice and it definitely served the purpose. I was a lot younger then and said at the time I'd never ride that far again without at least a sheepskin on the seat. Still have it and will never sell it.

1st gen KLR650 is like a leatherman supertool or a kromer hat. Once you get one, you never want to be without it.

En el año 2012 tuve la fortuna de encontrarme y poder conversar en Cuzco, (Perú). con dos muchachos que venían desde USA en una KLR como la del video y una Honda Transalp, eran de Colorado según recuerdo. Tanto ellos como yo estábamos fascinados con esa máquina. hoy a mis 54 años sigo buscando una en buenas condiciones pero sus valores aquí son inalcanzables. KLR 250 is totally bulletproof. and if you don't need to go on interstate highways, its a good 2nd choice. it was unchanged for so many years that there are ample supply of parts on ebay for the 250.

I loved this bike as it was my first introduction to motorcycling. If you can find a low milage good condition gen 1, you can build up a nice fit for purpose bike at low cost. Just research the common problems and have them sorted out. Seeing this video made me long for my old one that served me so well. Safe riding.....

They are getting harder to find. When I win the lottery and start my museum, the 1st gen KLR650 gets parked in an exclusive space between the 1984 Honda big red ATC and 1976 Suzuki RM250

Looking fresh hardcore to i personally own a klr 650 C model dirt oriented and a lot of people be admiring the stock exhaust sound especially in road blocks where i just be sliding through. .

Picking my 05' up in two days, I agree with you, most of these gen 1's have all the accessories and mods on, the previous owner did the Doo, progressive springs, pannier and crash bars, barkbusters hand guards, wider foot pegs etc...

KLR riders tend to modify for comfort, reliability and storage capacity. And they take care of the bikes. Good used KLRs are a bargain. You won't be competitive at the Paris to Dakar Rally; but if you are doing transcanada, riding to Argentina, OR want a reliable daily rider, it cant be beat.

Wow I have the same 07 klr color and seargent seat kenda tires front n rear same guards and hi way foot pegs but original windscreen. I also have the tank bag and side bags that are on the crash bars and a luggage rack in place of the factory rack with bags. Everything else is stock with 17 k on the clock! Nice bike!

since the bike was identical for so many years, there is a ton of used stuff on ebay for racks, bash bars, seats, etc. Id suggest searching for used of what you want for style, not brand. Thanks!

I own a 1988 Gen 1 and love my Bike, and yes the front break is mushy. Can someone please list the part number, or where to buy… for the front rotor, caliper if needed, and steel braided hose?

I had an 01 and put 50k miles on it in 2 yrs and I loved the bike took it all over the US and I have friends that still have them. I also have a 16 CRF1000 and love this bike even more and do a lot more off road then I felt I could on the KLR. 2 yrs ago Tym came for the weekend and I took him out on some of my fav trails he was on an 02 KLR650 and me on my 16 CRF1000 and he could not keep up at all. I switched bike and found out why. The CRF felt like it was 50lbs less then the KLR and it was so much easier to ride off and on road. Not trying to piss anyone off but if you think you like or love the old or new KLR take the CRF1000 for a ride.

at over 500 pounds, the Africa twin is ~100 pounds heavier than the KLR. I'd bet the feeling of being lighter is really the feeling of being more in control. Stiffer suspension, better brakes and more power will do that. The best bike to ride is the one you are on. Neither of these bikes is made to leave the ground or do whoops. Both are great swiss army knives. The honda more refined, but the KLR more durable and reliable. If you are doing alot of highway riding, there is no substitute for engine size. If you are shooting for reliability and parts availability to ride internationally, the KLR is still top of my list. I'm glad you are enjoying the Africa twin. Ive not parted an Africa Twin yet, but Ive ridden one (swapped with a rider on group ride). I am aware that they have had recalls on the CDI/ECM and that you have to stay diligent on the valve train maintenance. Ive also had guys try to buy forks from mx bikes for them. Apparently, the factory forks corrode on the inside and start sticking. Id encourage you to change the fork oil on it once a year. Thanks for the feedback. Great bikes - both of them.

@@RecycledAndSaved I been riding for 50 years and a bike tech for almost as long. The AT is heavier at 90lbs and the fact it feels and is faster off road is because it is made better for that kind of riding. I myself have 10 bikes in my garage from a xt1200 to a PW50 so I'm not stuck riding just one bike one way. Oh and let's not forget that the KLR has a doohicky as we all like to call it when it fails you don't get to ride home. I have replaced well over 50 of them. The KLR is a good bike but there is a lot more bikes that are better. I have a 94 KLX650 with 54k miles on it and it's a wayyyyy better option off road than the KLR.... But my 04 EXC525 is better than the KLX and my 08 WR250F is the fastest way home when you're deep in the woods..

I just searched for paint codes in Kawasaki parts catalog. 2006 came in Red/Silver and Green/silver. 2007 came in Silver/Black AND Red/Silver. So everyone here is right. Thanks for input. More input is better.

I have heard that in Southern USA, certain dual sport bikes are regularly stolen to take outside the usa. Especially bikes that have not been changed for over a decade - KLR650 XR650 and DRZ all fit in that category. Sorry yours got hit. When I was a kid, my first bike (an XR75) was stolen. Not only was I ripped off, but as a young kid, I felt personally violated and paranoid over it. I still lock my truck in my own garage. I think it goes back to that theft.

But low kms though, I don’t do long distance riding (36,000 km) I don’t do off roading kept inside garage first 20 years, now outside onder winter cover. But rusty. Yours looks much better

I live in Hawaii everything is more expensive here and i have a chance to get a used 2007 KLR 650 with only 2800 miles on it in very good shape. for $3,500 the guy wants. Your thoughts I'm 56 years old and want to start riding again. Aloha

Condition on a 16 year old bike can vary quite a bit - all the way to showroom mint to used up scrap. That said, if I was on the big island looking for a bike able to do highway rides safely and still get to remote beaches or plantations- Klr 650 would be at top of list 1st or 2nd gen

I just paid $2,950 for an '04 with 15k miles, so I'd say that price is comparable. I'm in the Black Hills of SD and prices seem to be a bit high for adventure/dual sport bikes around here as well.

I don't know what your riding history is, but riding the KLR is my first experience on a dual sport (I've been riding sport-touring street bikes since 2007) and it feels very easy to ride. The seat is little taller than I'm used to (34" vs. 32) but the KLR weighs a lot less than any street bike I've ever ridden, so I find any sort of "feet down" maneuver (backing, 3 pt. turns, etc) much easier than I'm used to. FWIW I'm 5'9".
