(sorry, I took the scenic route!) It turned out beautiful btw :-)

Would it be possible to pre-treat the string with stabilizing resin before encasing it with the dyed resin? The idea would be to fill the pores and prevent the black resin from soaking into the string and ruining the bright colors. This might work better with the same type of resin, just undyed - dip the string in the undyed resin and then work it into the string as much as possible. Let it set just a tiny bit so it's gel like, then scrape off the excess. Then wait for it to set further so that it's rubbery but still flexible, and into the black resin to encase it! Maybe also pack in more string for the amount of black resin.

The second you pulled out the dyes I was like, “oh, no, it’s gonna time his colors!” And then I saw you pick the black and I was really bummed for you ‘cause I knew you’d probably end up with black string. I have more experience with fiber arts than resin. Unless the cord is fairly water-repellent, like something with plastic in the fibers or something waxed, it’s gonna soak in. But water resistant things are a good bet - crayon shavings, metal, etc. Porous materials like fabric and paper will probably soak up your dye. Anyway, it turned out cool regardless.
